A code does not automatically identify a defective PC or prove misconduct. For example, MODIFIED_DATA explicitly includes corruption as a possible cause, and timeout codes can result from a route or overloaded wireless link.
Use this triage sequence before changing settings
- Capture the details. Write down the complete code, its accompanying message, platform, Stable or Experimental branch, server name and the exact local time.
- Define the scope. Try one known-good server. If only one server fails, suspect that server or the route to it; if every server fails, focus on the client, account, platform or local network.
- Separate data from network symptoms. A modified-data message calls for a clean installation and verification. Reachability, timeout and player-state messages call for network checks first.
- Check the PC branch. On Steam, open the DayZ entry, choose Properties, open BETAs, and confirm that the intended Stable or Experimental branch is selected.
- Escalate with evidence. Use the server, time, connection type and any requested traceroute rather than sending only a screenshot of the number.
0x00020009: CONNECT (connecting failed)
0x00020009 means the connection attempt failed before you could establish a usable session. It is not, by itself, proof that the server is offline or that your internet connection is generally down.

Fix the client data first
Bohemia’s PC troubleshooting guidance recommends reinstalling the vanilla game and downloadable-content data as the first corrective action. A clean reinstall removes damaged or mismatched files that can prevent the initial handshake. On Steam, let the launcher finish all downloads before testing; do not interrupt the process or copy old mod folders back into the installation while diagnosing the error.
If the error remains
Test another server. If the failure follows one server, note that server’s name and the approximate time of each attempt. For a support report, include how you connected (wired or Wi-Fi, and any relevant platform details) and a traceroute to the problematic server when requested. Repeating the same reinstall without collecting this information rarely adds anything.
0x00050017: server unreachable
0x00050017 indicates that the game could not reach the server. The problem can be outside the game: a router rule, parental-control filter, ISP route change or other network-path issue may block only that destination.
Check whether the scope is one server
Try several servers in different regions. If most work and one does not, record the affected server and time and treat it as a destination-specific reachability problem. If all servers fail, continue with the local-network checks below.
Inspect the router and compare networks
- Review router filtering, firewall and parental-control rules for blocked game traffic or newly added restrictions.
- Restart the router only if that is normal for your network and you know the device’s recovery procedure.
- Compare the connection with another network, such as a trusted wired connection or a phone hotspot, where data charges and local policies allow it.
- If the alternate network works, contact the ISP or network administrator with the original and alternate results.
Do not change advanced port, NAT or firewall settings that you do not understand; an incorrect rule can create new connectivity problems. Include the server, time, ISP, router changes and network comparison in a support case.

0x00040031: PLAYER_STATE_TIMEOUT
PLAYER_STATE_TIMEOUT means the player spent too long in one of the login-machine states. It is a session-progress timeout, not a diagnosis of a particular component.

Prefer Ethernet over congested Wi-Fi when possible. Pause large downloads and streaming on the same connection, move away from a crowded wireless channel, and avoid testing while the router is reporting packet loss or repeated reconnects. A stable connection matters more than a high advertised speed.
What to send if support is needed
Bohemia’s troubleshooting request asks for your connection type (wired or Wi-Fi), connection-speed information, region, server name and the exact attempt time. State whether the error affects one server or all servers and whether another network changes the result. Those details help distinguish a route problem from a session-service issue.
0x00040009: MODIFIED_DATA
MODIFIED_DATA means the client detected modified data or a corrupted installation. The wording does not establish that you cheated: corruption, an interrupted update, an incorrect branch or leftover files can all produce a data-integrity failure.
Restore a clean installation
- Close DayZ and the launcher.
- On Steam, open the game’s Properties and confirm the intended branch in BETAs.
- Use Steam’s installed-files verification function and wait for it to complete. Allow every replacement download to finish.
- Remove or temporarily move unofficial remnants only when you can identify them safely; do not delete unrelated saves or configuration files blindly.
- If verification does not repair the installation, uninstall DayZ, confirm that the game directory is gone, reinstall the current branch and test before adding optional content.
Start with a completely clean launch. If it succeeds, reintroduce optional content one item at a time so that a newly failing component can be identified.

0x00040004: TIMEOUT and 0x0004000A: unstable network
0x00040004 — network timeout
TIMEOUT means communication took too long. Check whether other devices are losing connectivity at the same time, then test with a wired link or a less congested Wi-Fi connection. Record the server and time, because a repeating pattern on one destination points toward a route or server issue rather than a general hardware failure.
0x0004000A — unstable network
This code identifies instability rather than a single complete outage. Look for wireless interference, distance from the access point, background uploads, power-saving behavior on a laptop adapter and router logs showing reconnects. If the code disappears on Ethernet or another network, give that comparison to support. Neither code alone proves that your network card or router is physically defective.
0x000400F0: BattlEye
0x000400F0 is defined as a BattlEye kick. First read the accompanying text: a client-service failure and a global-ban notice require different actions.
When the message concerns a global ban
Bohemia’s official FAQ states: “The banning system is administrated by Battleye, we have absolutely no involvement in the process of detecting cheats/hacks nor administrating any bans etc.” A global-ban appeal therefore belongs with BattlEye, not with a DayZ reinstall or a request to Bohemia to reverse the decision. Do not promise that deleting files will remove a ban; reinstalling the game cannot change an enforcement record held by the anti-cheat provider.
When BattlEye itself fails on the client
Follow BattlEye’s support instructions for a non-ban service failure. Where its FAQ specifically calls for it, remove and reinstall the local BattlEye folder, then restart the launcher and test again. Keep the exact message, operating-system details and time of failure for the BattlEye case. Avoid downloading replacement files from unofficial mirrors.

Empty DayZ server list
An empty browser is not always an installation problem. Bohemia says that if it is Wednesday, the most likely cause is scheduled server maintenance at 08:00 (GMT +1) every Wednesday. Wait until the maintenance window has passed, restart the browser and check again.
If the list is still empty afterward, contact customer support and include your platform, region, branch, approximate time and whether other online services work. A Wednesday maintenance explanation applies to that scheduled window; it does not explain an empty list on every other day.
Steam branch and installation checks
Stable and Experimental are separate branches. Selecting the wrong one can leave you with a version that does not match the servers or the rest of your installation. In Steam, open DayZ → Properties → BETAs, select the branch you actually intend to use, and allow Steam to complete the update. Do not alternate branches while troubleshooting a data-integrity error; each switch can trigger another download and make it harder to identify the original cause.

- Exact local date and time, including your time zone if possible.
- Connection type (Ethernet or Wi-Fi), approximate connection-speed information and relevant ISP or router changes.
- What you already tried, such as file verification, a clean reinstall, another server or another network.
- A traceroute when the official troubleshooting request calls for one, especially for a persistent 0x00020009 or 0x00050017 case.
Use Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ support or feedback channel for game, server and installation issues. Use BattlEye’s support route for anti-cheat service failures and global-ban questions. Keeping one case focused on one reproducible symptom prevents unrelated fixes from obscuring the diagnosis.

When the usual fixes do not work
Stop repeating the same reinstall or router reset once the result is unchanged. Recheck the scope: one server versus all servers, one network versus another, and one branch versus the intended branch. Then send the complete evidence package to the correct support channel. A precise code, server and timestamp are more actionable than a generic statement that “DayZ will not connect.”

Can reinstalling DayZ remove a BattlEye global ban?
No. Bohemia says BattlEye administers its banning system. A global-ban question must be directed to BattlEye; reinstalling game files does not alter that enforcement record.
