How to Set Up an OpenVPN Server for Remote Home Assistant Access

A practical guide to keeping Home Assistant private while reaching it remotely through an OpenVPN tunnel, with routing, certificates, mobile setup, security, and troubleshooting.

The safest pattern is to leave Home Assistant on your private LAN and reach it through an OpenVPN tunnel. Run the VPN server on a router, firewall appliance, or Linux host; forward one OpenVPN listener port to that server; route a separate VPN subnet to the Home Assistant network; then import a client profile on your phone or computer and open Home Assistant at its internal address. This avoids exposing the Home Assistant web service directly to the internet.

What the finished setup looks like

A remote connection has four distinct parts:

  • Home Assistant: remains on its existing private LAN address.
  • OpenVPN server: runs on a router, firewall appliance, Linux host, or OpenVPN Access Server installation inside the home network.
  • WAN edge: the internet-facing router forwards the OpenVPN UDP port to the server’s fixed LAN address.
  • Client device: a phone, tablet, or computer imports a profile, establishes the tunnel, and then reaches Home Assistant through the permitted route.

The VPN creates a routed interface and assigns the remote device an address from a dedicated pool. OpenVPN’s sample configuration uses a TUN interface, UDP port 1194, and the 10.8.0.0/24 client network. Those values are examples, not mandatory settings; choose a pool that does not overlap with your home LAN or networks the client commonly uses.

Check these requirements before installing anything

Record the network details

Write down the Home Assistant LAN address, the home LAN subnet, the VPN client subnet you intend to use, and the public address or DNS hostname by which the home connection can be reached. Also note which device will host the VPN service and reserve a stable LAN address for it. A changing server address will eventually break the port-forward rule.

  • Home Assistant LAN: the address and subnet on which the instance currently works at home.
  • VPN subnet: a distinct private range for connected clients, such as the sample 10.8.0.0/24.
  • Public endpoint: the router’s reachable public address or a hostname that tracks it.
  • Listener: the UDP port selected for OpenVPN, with 1194 as the common sample value.
  • ISP addressing: whether the ISP gives the router a real, reachable public address or places it behind carrier-grade NAT (CG-NAT).

Overlapping ranges are a frequent source of confusing failures. For example, if the home LAN and VPN pool use the same subnet, the client cannot reliably tell whether a destination is local to its current network or inside the tunnel. Change the VPN pool or redesign the LAN before proceeding.

Confirm that inbound access is possible

Port forwarding works only when the internet-facing router has a reachable public address. If the ISP uses CG-NAT, the router may show a private WAN address while another carrier device owns the public address. In that situation, a forward configured in your house cannot receive unsolicited connections. Ask the ISP for a reachable public address or use another supported remote-access design rather than repeatedly changing OpenVPN settings.

Choose where the OpenVPN server will run

Endpoint What you configure Best fit Trade-offs
Router or firewall appliance Enable its OpenVPN Server mode, choose the service port and VPN subnet, define client access, and add any required firewall policy. Homes that want the VPN at the network edge with no separate always-on computer. Capabilities and labels vary by firmware; verify that the device supports server mode, certificate generation or import, and routes to the Home Assistant LAN.
Linux host Install OpenVPN, create a certificate authority and server/client credentials, enable forwarding, and maintain firewall and service settings. Users comfortable administering a dedicated, continuously running machine. You must handle updates, key protection, service recovery, and routing yourself.
OpenVPN Access Server Use its web management interface for routing, authentication, administrator accounts, certificates, and client profiles. People who prefer a managed interface and explicit controls for split or full tunneling. It still needs a reachable host, correct WAN forwarding, careful administrator security, and configuration backups.

Manufacturer documentation for router-based OpenVPN servers commonly exposes fields for the service port, VPN subnet, and which client networks may be accessed. Treat the labels as vendor-specific, but make sure the resulting policy allows the VPN pool to reach the Home Assistant host and nothing broader than necessary.

Install and initialize OpenVPN

Start from the official sample design

OpenVPN’s sample server and client files provide the basic routed-TUN arrangement. The sample listens on UDP 1194 and allocates clients from 10.8.0.0/24. Replace those values when they conflict with your LAN or with networks used by traveling devices. Keep the server and client protocol, port, tunnel type, and certificate settings consistent.

The snippet illustrates the sample values only. It does not by itself create a secure or complete deployment: certificates, keys, authentication, routing, and firewall rules are still required.

Create the certificate hierarchy

Initialize a certificate authority (CA), issue the server certificate and private key, and issue a separate client certificate and private key for every phone, tablet, or computer that will connect. Keep the CA private key offline or otherwise tightly protected. A shared profile makes incident response difficult because you cannot tell which device used it or revoke only the missing device.

  1. Initialize the CA on the system that will manage your OpenVPN credentials.
  2. Generate the server certificate and private key, then install them on the VPN endpoint.
  3. Create one client certificate and private key per device, with a name that identifies the device without exposing personal information.
  4. Build an individual client profile containing the remote hostname or public address, listener port, CA certificate, and that device’s client credentials.
  5. Transfer each profile through a channel you trust, and remove temporary copies from email, downloads folders, or shared storage after import.

Exact certificate-generation screens and commands differ between a router, a Linux distribution, and Access Server. Follow the endpoint’s current documentation while preserving the one-profile-per-device model.

Configure the internet-facing router

  1. Give the VPN server a stable LAN address, either by a static configuration or a DHCP reservation.
  2. Create a port-forward rule for the selected OpenVPN UDP port from the public WAN interface to that LAN address.
  3. Set the client profile’s remote host to the public hostname or address and its port to the forwarded listener port.
  4. If the public address changes, use a hostname that updates correctly and test that it resolves from a different network.
  5. Leave Home Assistant’s own web port unforwarded. A forwarded VPN listener is not the same as publishing Home Assistant directly.

OpenVPN’s NAT guidance uses the gateway’s public address in the client configuration and forwards the listener port to the internal server. If the VPN server itself is the gateway, the separate forward may not be needed; if it sits behind another router, the forward is required at the internet-facing edge.

Add routes and firewall rules without opening the whole LAN

Permit the intended path

In routed mode, create a policy that allows the VPN client subnet to reach the Home Assistant LAN address and the service port used by your installation. The Home Assistant host or a narrowly defined subnet is preferable to an unrestricted rule for every home device. If you need additional services later, add them deliberately rather than granting broad LAN access at the start.

Make return traffic work

Packets must travel back from Home Assistant’s LAN to the VPN client pool. With a routed design, the LAN gateway needs a route for the VPN subnet pointing to the VPN server, or the server must advertise and enforce the equivalent route. A firewall or router may instead apply NAT for VPN-originated traffic; that can simplify return routing, but it hides the original client address and reduces direct reachability between the client and LAN devices. Choose one approach intentionally and ensure the firewall policy matches it.

Check local firewall layers

  • The WAN firewall must allow the chosen OpenVPN UDP listener to reach the server.
  • The VPN server must allow forwarding from the tunnel interface to the Home Assistant LAN destination.
  • The Home Assistant host firewall, if enabled, must permit the traffic arriving through the selected path.
  • The LAN gateway must accept return traffic to the VPN pool, either through a route or the chosen NAT arrangement.

Choose split tunneling or full tunneling

Mode Traffic sent through home Advantages Costs and risks
Split tunnel Only Home Assistant and explicitly selected home subnets. Lower home upload use, less latency for ordinary internet traffic, better battery life on mobile devices, and a smaller access boundary. Other internet traffic still uses the local network, and every required home subnet must be routed deliberately.
Full tunnel The remote device’s general internet traffic exits through the home connection while the VPN is active. Centralizes traffic through the home connection and can make all remote traffic appear to originate from home. Uses more home bandwidth, can increase latency, may drain a phone faster, and gives the VPN gateway responsibility for much more traffic.

Access Server documentation distinguishes split-tunnel, full-tunnel, and domain-routing choices. For a Home Assistant-only requirement, split tunneling is usually the narrower policy: route the Home Assistant host and only the additional home subnets you genuinely need. Select full tunneling when routing all remote traffic through home is an explicit requirement, not as an automatic default.

Import the profile and connect from a phone

  1. Install a current OpenVPN-compatible client on the phone.
  2. Import the profile created specifically for that phone. Do not reuse a profile issued to another device.
  3. Approve the client certificate and any requested VPN permissions.
  4. Connect while the phone is on a different network, such as cellular data or another Wi-Fi network. Testing from the same home Wi-Fi can hide WAN, forwarding, and DNS mistakes.
  5. Confirm that the client receives an address from the VPN pool and that the tunnel reports as connected.
  6. Open Home Assistant using its internal LAN address or the internal hostname that your VPN DNS configuration resolves.

The Home Assistant companion app needs the VPN connection established before remote sensors can update. If the tunnel is disconnected when the app tries to synchronize, the app cannot reach the private instance even though the VPN profile is installed.

Configure Home Assistant’s URL settings

In Home Assistant, open Settings > System > Network. Set an Internet URL only when your deployment actually needs one. In a VPN-only design, keep access on the internal address or an internal DNS name that is reachable across the tunnel. Do not enter a public URL merely because the phone is away from home; the VPN is providing the secure path.

If the app works by IP address but not by hostname, the tunnel is probably carrying traffic correctly and name resolution is the remaining issue. Provide VPN-side DNS that can resolve the internal Home Assistant name, or use a stable internal hostname that the client can resolve while connected.

Harden the deployment

  • Home Assistant account: use a strong, unique password and enable multi-factor authentication.
  • Patch schedule: keep Home Assistant and the VPN endpoint current. Home Assistant recommends staying current with monthly releases.
  • Key custody: protect the CA and every client private key. Treat a profile as a credential, not as a harmless configuration file.
  • Lost device response: revoke and replace that device’s certificate/profile immediately, then remove its access from the server.
  • Least privilege: restrict routes and firewall rules to the Home Assistant host or required subnets.
  • Access Server administration: replace self-signed web certificates where appropriate, use named administrator accounts, enable MFA, and back up the configuration before upgrades.
  • Exposure: remember that port forwarding by itself provides no encryption. Only the OpenVPN service, protected by its certificates and authentication policy, should be reachable on the forwarded port.

Test the tunnel in a way that exposes mistakes

  1. Test from outside: disable Wi-Fi on the phone or use a separate internet connection.
  2. Check the handshake: verify that the client reaches the public hostname and that the server logs a successful certificate-authenticated connection.
  3. Check addressing: confirm that the client has a VPN-pool address rather than only its local Wi-Fi or cellular address.
  4. Check the route: test the permitted Home Assistant host, not an unrelated LAN device.
  5. Open the internal URL: use the same internal address that works at home.
  6. Test the app: after the browser works, connect the companion app and wait for its sensors to synchronize.
  7. Disconnect deliberately: turn off the VPN and confirm that the private Home Assistant address is no longer reachable from the outside network.

There are no published performance statistics associated with the sample values above. Throughput and battery use depend on the endpoint hardware, encryption settings, uplink capacity, radio connection, and routing policy, so treat the sample port and subnet as configuration examples rather than benchmarks.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The client never connects

  • Verify that the profile contains the current public hostname or address and the correct UDP port.
  • Check the WAN port-forward destination and confirm that the VPN server is listening on that port.
  • Compare the router’s WAN address with the address seen from the internet; a mismatch can indicate CG-NAT or another upstream router.
  • Check whether an ISP, public Wi-Fi network, or local firewall blocks UDP traffic.
  • Review certificate validity, client profile integrity, and server logs for authentication failures.

The tunnel connects, but Home Assistant does not load

  • Confirm that the profile pushed or installed a route to the Home Assistant LAN.
  • Check the VPN-to-LAN firewall rule and the Home Assistant host firewall.
  • Verify the return route or NAT behavior for the VPN subnet.
  • Use the internal Home Assistant address, not a public address that is not routed through the tunnel.
  • Check that the selected split-tunnel policy includes the exact host or subnet you are testing.

It works by IP address but not by hostname

Configure DNS reachable through the VPN, or use a stable internal hostname. The VPN can be healthy while the remote device still uses cellular or public DNS that has no knowledge of private home names.

The phone connects but the companion app shows stale sensors

Establish the VPN before opening or synchronizing the app. Confirm that the app’s configured Home Assistant address is the internal one reachable through the tunnel, then check that the phone has not suspended the VPN in the background.

Only some networks work

Look for overlapping subnets. A hotel or mobile hotspot that uses the same private range as your home LAN can cause the phone to route locally instead of into the VPN. Change the home or VPN addressing plan so the networks are distinct; when you cannot control the remote network, choose a less-common VPN pool and document it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance and recovery plan

Document the public hostname, listener port, server LAN address, VPN pool, Home Assistant LAN address, route policy, and certificate inventory. Keep a secure backup of the CA and server configuration, but store private keys separately from ordinary notes. After changing the ISP connection, router, VPN endpoint, or Home Assistant address, retest from an external network and verify both browser access and companion-app updates.

When a device is lost, revoke its client credential rather than deleting only the profile from the phone. Issue a replacement profile with a new key pair. When an administrator leaves, remove the named administrative account and rotate any shared secrets. Before upgrading an Access Server installation, back up its configuration and confirm that you can restore it.

Bottom line

Keep Home Assistant private, expose only the OpenVPN listener, and make the tunnel the sole route from an away-from-home device to the internal service. A clean deployment has non-overlapping networks, one certificate profile per device, a tested WAN forward, an explicit Home Assistant route, least-privilege firewall rules, and a documented revocation process. Once the VPN is connected, the phone uses Home Assistant exactly as it does at home—through the internal address—without publishing the Home Assistant interface to the public internet.
