First identify whether the failure affects every item, one custom class, all infected, or one dynamic event. Then validate the relevant XML registration, definitions, limits, event coordinates, and boot log. Correct the files with the server stopped, restart, and reset persistent economy state only when configuration fixes and a controlled restart have failed.

How DayZ spawning is organized
DayZ’s Central Economy is the server-side system that maintains item loot and population systems. Different parts of the CE read different mission files, so a loot failure and an infected failure can have entirely different causes. A syntactically valid XML file can still be ignored, rejected, or produce no spawns when it is not registered, uses the wrong class name, contains undefined tags, or asks for a population that the map has nowhere to place.

Identify exactly what is failing
Do not edit every CE file at once. The fastest fix comes from narrowing the symptom before changing anything.
All ordinary loot is missing
If buildings are empty across the map, inspect economy switches, global settings, file registration, and the boot log before focusing on one item entry. A broad failure usually points to a disabled or unregistered subsystem, an XML load error, or persistent economy state that has not yet been rebuilt.

Only one custom item is missing
When standard loot works but a modded or custom class does not, stay in the item-definition layer. Check the exact class name, its nominal count, every category and usage tag, and whether the selected tags correspond to map groups with actual positions. Do not reset the whole economy for a single-class error.
Loot works but infected do not
Treat this as a separate population problem. Inspect db/economy.xml, db/globals.xml, and the relevant definitions in db/events.xml. Item entries in types.xml cannot turn infected spawning on when the infected subsystem or its global limit is disabled.
Only one dynamic event is absent
Check the event definition and, when that event uses fixed placement, its matching entries in cfgeventspawns.xml. An event can be enabled and still produce nothing if its name does not match the coordinate section or if no coordinates exist.
Validate registration and read the boot log
Confirm every custom file is registered
Open cfgeconomycore.xml and verify that every custom types, events, globals, economy, or spawnabletypes file is listed with the correct filename and schema type. Check spelling, capitalization, directory placement, and the file extension. A file can be perfectly formed XML and still have no effect when the CE is never told to load it.

Registration errors are especially common after renaming a mission folder, moving a file into a subdirectory, or copying a configuration from another map. Compare the registered name character by character with the file that is actually present. Keep one authoritative copy rather than registering several versions of the same definition while troubleshooting.
Use script_*.log as the first diagnostic record
After each boot, inspect the server’s script_*.log for Central Economy load errors. Look for the filename, schema, element, or class named in the error, then fix that item before interpreting in-game results. The log can distinguish a missing registration from malformed XML and from a valid file whose values produce no eligible spawn.
Make a change, restart, and read the next boot log as a separate test. Do not stack several unrelated edits before restarting; otherwise you cannot tell which correction fixed the load or which new error it introduced. Repair a missing item or empty loot economy
Check the class name exactly
In db/types.xml, the item’s class name must exactly match the game or mod class. Treat capitalization, underscores, and every character as significant. A near match is a different class, so the CE has no valid item to spawn even though the XML remains readable.

The nominal value is the target count used by the economy for that class. If it is zero, the CE has no positive target to maintain and the item will not appear as ordinary loot. Verify the value in the file that is actually registered, not only in an unregistered working copy.
Use defined, case-correct tags
Review each category, usage, and value tag. Names are case-sensitive and must be defined by the applicable limits definitions. A typo or different capitalization can invalidate the intended placement logic even when the surrounding XML is valid.

Match tags to real map-group positions
Tags do not create locations. They select map groups that already contain positions for that category or usage. If the chosen tags do not correspond to groups with positions on the selected map, the CE has nowhere eligible to place the item. This explains why an item can have a positive nominal count and still never be seen.
When testing, use a known working tag combination from the same map and compare it with the custom entry. Change one tag at a time, restart, and observe the next economy cycle rather than changing the class name, count, and tags simultaneously.

Some custom items depend on registered spawnabletypes data or other economy files. Confirm those files are also registered in cfgeconomycore.xml and that their schema type and filenames are correct. A parent item may spawn while its configured attachments do not if the related definition was omitted or rejected.
Repair missing infected and zombie populations
Inspect economy subsystem switches
Open db/economy.xml and check the switches for the relevant economy and population subsystems. An off switch can suppress spawning globally, regardless of valid item or event definitions. Confirm that the file being edited is registered and that the boot log shows it loading without an error.
Check the global infected limit
In db/globals.xml, inspect global limits such as ZombieMaxCount. A zero or unsuitable limit prevents the server from maintaining the expected infected population. Because this is a global control, changing an individual item entry in types.xml cannot correct it.
Verify the infected event definitions
Review db/events.xml for the infected or dynamic-event definitions used by the map. Ensure the relevant event is present, active, and registered. If the event name is misspelled, differs in capitalization, or is disabled, the server can run normally while producing no infected for that event.

Separate a population cap from a placement failure
If the global limit and event are active but infected remain absent, determine whether the event uses fixed locations. For fixed placement, an event needs matching coordinate entries in cfgeventspawns.xml. If ordinary infected appear elsewhere but one event does not, focus on that event’s name and coordinates rather than raising global limits.
Fix event-driven spawns and fixed coordinates
Match the event name in both files
Find the event identifier in db/events.xml, then locate the same identifier in cfgeventspawns.xml. The names must match exactly. A difference in capitalization, punctuation, or spelling leaves the event without the coordinate set it expects.
Confirm coordinates actually exist
Matching names are not enough: the coordinate section must contain usable entries. An empty section or a section copied for a different map provides no fixed locations. Confirm that the coordinates belong to the map and that the event is configured to use fixed placement before changing other CE files.

Use the log to catch event-load failures
Restart after correcting the event and inspect script_*.log. Resolve schema, filename, and event-name errors reported at boot. Test the event in isolation so a successful ordinary loot cycle does not obscure a still-broken event definition.
Apply changes without damaging persistence
Stop the server before editing
Shut the server down completely before changing mission XML or persistence-related files. Never edit storage_1/ while the server is running. A live process can overwrite your change, leave partially written state, or make the next diagnosis unreliable.
Restart after XML corrections
XML changes are evaluated during server startup and subsequent CE processing. After saving a correction, start the server, read the new boot log, and allow the economy to process. Confirm that the corrected file is loading before deciding that a value failed.

Use RestartSpawn for a controlled rebuild
If the configuration is correct but old economy state prevents new values from appearing, set RestartSpawn to 1 for one restart, then return it to 0. This is a documented, targeted recovery step; do not leave the setting enabled indefinitely. Restart again after restoring the value and then observe the economy.

Allow existing lifetimes to expire when appropriate
Some corrections do not appear instantly because existing items remain under their current lifetime rules. When the log is clean and the target values are correct, wait for those lifetimes to expire and let the CE repopulate naturally. This preserves the rest of the persistent world and is less disruptive than deleting storage.
Reserve a storage_1/ deletion for a full reset
Deleting storage_1/ resets the persistent economy and is the most disruptive recovery path. Stop the server, make a backup, and use this option only when configuration correction, a clean restart, a one-time RestartSpawn rebuild, and waiting for lifetimes have not resolved stale state. A storage reset can remove the accumulated economy state you intended to preserve, so treat it as a wipe decision rather than a routine troubleshooting step.
Choose the least disruptive fix

A practical diagnostic runbook
- Record the symptom. Note whether the problem affects all loot, one class, all infected, or one event. Test an ordinary item and the suspected custom item separately so a broad failure is not confused with a definition error.
- Back up the mission and persistence data. Keep a copy of the current XML files and
storage_1/before editing. This gives you a rollback point if a correction has an unintended effect. - Confirm registration. In
cfgeconomycore.xml, verify every custom file’s exact filename and schema type. Remove ambiguity caused by duplicate or obsolete copies. - Read the boot log. Open the latest
script_*.log, identify Central Economy load errors, and fix the first reported filename, schema, or class problem. - Repair the narrowest definition. For one item, check the exact class, positive
nominal, case-sensitive tags, and map-group positions. For infected, inspect economy switches,ZombieMaxCount, and active events. - Validate event placement. If the symptom is event-specific, match the event name between
events.xmlandcfgeventspawns.xml, and verify that coordinate entries exist for the map. - Stop and restart. Apply all edits with the server stopped, start it, and read the new log before judging the result.
- Handle stale state cautiously. If the log is clean but corrected values do not appear, use
RestartSpawn=1for one restart, return it to0, and wait for lifetimes to expire. - Escalate only when justified. Delete
storage_1/only after backups and only when a complete economy reset is acceptable.
Common mistakes that look like spawning bugs
- Editing an unregistered copy: The visible file changes, but the CE continues loading another path listed in
cfgeconomycore.xml. - Relying on XML validity alone: Correct syntax does not make a class name, tag, schema, or map group valid.
- Using zero as a test value: A zero
nominalcount explicitly gives the CE no positive target. - Ignoring capitalization: Class names, tags, and event identifiers must use the exact names expected by the definitions.
- Raising limits before checking switches: A disabled economy subsystem or inactive event will not spawn more entities because a limit was increased.
- Assuming every event uses coordinates: Only event types configured for fixed placement require matching entries in
cfgeventspawns.xml; nevertheless, those events cannot work without them. - Wiping first: A storage reset can hide the original configuration mistake and destroys persistent economy state that could have been retained.
- Editing while online: The running server can overwrite persistence changes and produce misleading results on the next boot.
Keeping future changes testable
Maintain a simple change record containing the file, entry, old value, new value, restart time, and the relevant boot-log result. Test one logical change at a time and keep a known-good copy of the mission configuration. When adding a custom item, register its file first, validate the class and tags, then test placement on the intended map. When adding an event, validate its active definition and fixed coordinates separately.
Use scope to decide how much state to disturb. A single-class problem belongs in types.xml; a population-wide problem belongs in economy, globals, or events; an event-location problem belongs in the event and coordinate files. Only stale economy state justifies a controlled rebuild, and only an unrecoverable or intentionally disposable economy justifies deleting storage_1/.
