What you need before changing the map
This procedure applies to a 7 Days to Die dedicated server, where the game world runs as a standalone process and remains available without a host player online. The dedicated-server tool is separate from the regular game installation; the Steam tool uses app ID 294420, while the game itself uses app ID 251570.

- Administrative access to the machine or hosting control panel running the server.
- A clean server shutdown method so the current save finishes writing.
- Access to the active XML configuration file and the launch command or startup script.
- A backup location with enough storage for the existing save and configuration.
- The intended seed, a world size accepted by the installed server build, and compatible client and mod versions for everyone joining.
Do not edit a sample file and assume the server will use it. Many installations contain the shipped serverconfig.xml plus a custom copy. The only file that matters is the one passed to the server through its configuration-file option.
The three settings that control a generated world

GameWorld: choose random generation first
Set GameWorld to RWG before expecting a seed or size change. This is the switch that tells the server to use Random World Generation. When it is set to Navezgane, the server selects the fixed handcrafted world, so changing WorldGenSeed does not create a different random map.

WorldGenSeed: identify the generated map
The seed is a string, not a numeric-only field. Use the spelling and capitalization you want players to recognize, then keep a record of it. The server uses that string as generation input. If the generated world associated with the resulting name is already present, the server loads it; a different string can therefore select a different existing save rather than regenerate a map.
WorldGenSize: set width and height
In the current V3.2 server-settings reference, the supported sizes are 6144, 8192, and 10240. They describe both the width and height of the generated world. A value that looks reasonable but is not accepted by your particular build can prevent generation or make the setting ineffective, so treat the installed build’s shipped configuration as authoritative when it differs from an older guide.
How the server decides whether to load or generate
Seed and size are generation inputs, not live map-editing controls. At startup, the server evaluates the selected world mode and generation values. If the corresponding generated world is already available, it loads that world. If it is not available, it generates a new one.

This explains two common surprises:
- Changing a seed does not guarantee a fresh generation if the server can find a world with the resulting name.
- Changing the size does not expand or contract the current map. A different size points to a different generated-world result; the old map remains a separate save that you should preserve until you are certain the new one works.
Because the process can select an existing save, record the exact seed and size used for each world. That record makes rollback and future maintenance predictable.
Step-by-step: change the seed and size safely
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the server’s normal stop control or console command and wait until the process has exited. Do not edit while the world is still running.
- Back up the current save and configuration. Keep an untouched copy of the existing world and the XML file before changing values. Give the backup a date and a description of the old seed and size so it is not confused with the new world.
- Create a custom configuration copy. Copy the shipped
serverconfig.xmlto a name such asmyserver.xml. A custom copy prevents an update from overwriting your edits when the vendor replaces the shipped template. - Check the startup configuration. Open the launch script, service definition, or hosting-panel startup settings and confirm that its configuration-file option points to
myserver.xml(or whichever file you edited). If the command points elsewhere, change the intended file or update the command before starting the server. - Edit only the three value attributes. In the active XML file, change the values for
GameWorld,WorldGenSeed, andWorldGenSize. A typical group of entries is:<property name='GameWorld' value='RWG' />

<property name='WorldGenSize' value='8192' />
Keep the property names, XML punctuation, and surrounding entries intact. Change the text insidevalue; do not rename the property or edit a comment that merely describes it. - Save the file and check the values. Confirm that
GameWorldreadsRWG, the seed is exactly the intended string, and the size is supported by the server version. If your editor reports malformed XML, correct that before launch. - Start the server. Use the same startup command or panel you verified in step 4. Watch the log for world-loading or world-generation messages rather than assuming the edit was applied.
- Wait for the intended world. Do not have players connect until the server has finished loading or generating the selected world and is accepting connections.
- Test with one client first. Join with a client running a compatible game version and the required mods. Once the expected world is confirmed, let the rest of the group connect.
Which world size should you choose?
The current V3.2 reference lists three values. The table shows the documented choices without implying that one is universally best.

All three values are multiples of 2048. That relationship is a useful check, but it is not permission to enter any other multiple: the installed build still has to accept the value. If your server is on a release whose shipped configuration lists a different range, follow that file rather than an older web reference.

Changing only the seed
When the new seed should produce another world
Leave GameWorld at RWG, replace the seed string, and keep the size at a supported value. If the resulting world name is not already present, the server generates a new map at startup. Keep the old save backed up because the new world is a separate generation result, not a conversion of the old one.
When a seed appears to do nothing
A seed can appear ignored for two different reasons. The server may still be using Navezgane, which does not consume RWG seed input, or it may be loading an existing world associated with the resulting name. Check the mode first, then inspect the startup log and the saves available to the server.
Changing only the world size
Changing WorldGenSize selects a different generation input, but it does not resize the map currently in use. Treat the operation as a world change: stop the server, back up the existing save, select a supported size, and start with the verified configuration file. If you need the previous map again, restore or select its backed-up save rather than expecting the new size to alter it in place.

Do you need to wipe the world?

Do not delete a save merely because the first launch did not behave as expected. First confirm the active configuration path, the three values, and the server log. The exact save-management action needed to force regeneration can vary by build and hosting layout; make a restorable backup before moving or removing anything.

The seed is ignored
- Read
GameWorldin the active file. It must beRWG;Navezganeselects the handcrafted map. - Confirm that the seed was changed inside the
valueattribute, not in a property name, comment, or inactive copy. - Check whether a generated world with the resulting name already exists. Loading that world is expected behavior, not proof that the seed parser failed.
Nothing changes after editing
- Inspect the launch command or panel and identify the file supplied through its configuration-file option.
- Compare that path with the file you edited. A correct edit in an unused file has no effect.
- Stop the server before editing and restart it afterward; a running process does not automatically reread the XML.
The size is rejected or generation fails
- Use a value accepted by the installed build. The current V3.2 reference lists 6144, 8192, and 10240; older documentation may not match your release.
- Check that the XML value contains only the number and that the surrounding file remains valid.
- Review available memory and storage, especially for 10240 worlds or heavily modded groups.
Generation is very slow
Larger worlds and modded server groups require more resources, but the available guidance does not establish a guaranteed generation-time estimate. Avoid promising players a fixed wait. Allow additional headroom, watch the server log, and do not interrupt the process unless the log indicates a failure.
Players cannot join after an update
Verify that the server and every client use compatible game versions and compatible required mods. A world-setting change does not remove version or mod compatibility requirements.

Memory and storage planning
The 7D2D dedicated-server guidance gives 6 GB of free RAM as a small-server minimum. For a modded server or a group of four or more players, it gives 10–16 GB as a comfortable range. These figures are planning guidance, not a guarantee that a particular seed, size, or mod collection will generate successfully.
Generation also needs disk capacity for the world and its backups. Keep the old save until the new world has been tested, so the backup requirement temporarily increases storage demand. If the machine is close to its memory or disk limit, choose a smaller supported size or increase resources before attempting generation.

Rollback plan if the new world is wrong
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Preserve the new configuration and any newly generated save in a separate folder instead of overwriting your backup.
- Restore the previous configuration copy or put the former
GameWorld,WorldGenSeed, andWorldGenSizevalues back into the active file. - Confirm that the launch command still points to the intended configuration.
- Restore the previous save from the dated backup if the server does not automatically select it.
- Start the server and verify the log before allowing players to reconnect.
Keeping configuration and save backups together is important: restoring one without the other can select a different generated-world result than the one your players remember.
