For a conventional DayZ dedicated server, start with -port=2302 for game traffic and set steamQueryPort = 2305; in serverDZ.cfg. Forward those UDP ports, plus the adjacent Steam networking ports identified by the server documentation, through both the host firewall and your router when the machine is behind NAT. The value in your own configuration file and startup log is authoritative: older guides often use 27016 for queries, but that is a community convention rather than the current Bohemia Interactive example.

The DayZ ports you normally need
DayZ uses separate endpoints for player traffic and for the Steam server browser. A server may accept a direct connection while remaining invisible in the browser if its query endpoint is blocked or points at the wrong port. Treat the ports as a set, not as interchangeable alternatives.

The current Bohemia Interactive configuration reference describes -port=2302 as the port on which the dedicated server listens and shows 2305 as the Steam query setting. The DayZ Modding Wiki uses the same 2305 UDP example. The 2303–2304 range is listed for Steam networking in its troubleshooting guidance, while 2304 also appears as the documented client-port value. Because these roles overlap numerically, do not infer a complete firewall rule from a single forum post; use the values actually assigned by your server build and configuration.
What each port does
Game port: -port
The game port carries the connection used to join and play on the server. The familiar default example is UDP 2302, but it is not hard-coded. The launch parameter controls it, so a host can run on another base port such as 2301. Every router rule, firewall rule, direct-connect address and instance map must follow that chosen value.

Steam query port: steamQueryPort
The query endpoint answers Steam browser requests: server name, player count, map and related listing information. In the current configuration reference, the example is:
steamQueryPort = 2305;This is a UDP port and is distinct from the game port. If it is closed, forwarded to another machine, or set to a different number than the one opened in the firewall, players can often connect directly yet fail to find the server in the in-game browser.
Steam networking and client settings
DayZ troubleshooting documentation identifies UDP 2303–2304 as adjacent Steam networking ports and notes that the reserved block shifts when the base game port changes. The official configuration example also contains clientPort = 2304;. These entries are why a robust rule set usually covers the documented adjacent range rather than opening only one number. Confirm the exact requirements for your server version before narrowing rules.

Why guides disagree about 2305 and 27016
Both numbers appear in DayZ administration material, but they do not have equal status. The current Bohemia Interactive configuration page and a recent DayZ Modding Wiki setup guide show 2305 as the Steam query example. Older Steam Community discussions, including a 2020 convention, commonly use 27016 and may also mention TCP 2312 (the game port plus 10) for DZSALauncher. That older arrangement reflects community tooling and historical practice; it is not the current official serverDZ.cfg example.
Do not forward both 2305 and 27016 merely because a tutorial lists them. Open one known query port, set the same value in serverDZ.cfg, restart the server and verify the listening port in the startup log. If a hosting wrapper supplies its own defaults, follow that wrapper’s documentation instead of assuming the standalone DayZ defaults. For example, the ServerZ README documents 2302/UDP for game traffic and 27015/UDP for its query endpoint, demonstrating why wrapper-specific settings must be checked.

DayZServer_x64.exe. - Confirm the value after
-port=. Keep 2302 if this is your first instance, or record the alternative value you deliberately selected. - Open the referenced
serverDZ.cfgand setsteamQueryPortto a distinct UDP port. Use 2305 for the current documented example. - Save the file, restart the process and inspect the startup log for the actual listening ports. A stale service definition or a second configuration file can otherwise leave you opening the wrong ports.
- Create host-firewall inbound rules for the game port, query port and the documented adjacent Steam networking ports. Select UDP; a TCP-only rule will not satisfy normal DayZ traffic.
- If the server is behind a home or office router, forward the same UDP numbers to the machine’s fixed private IP address. Ensure another device has not claimed the address through DHCP changes.
Configure a Linux dedicated server
The official Linux hosting example launches with a different game port to demonstrate that 2302 is configurable:
./DayZServer -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301 ...With a base port of 2301, recalculate the adjacent reserved range according to the server documentation rather than copying the 2302-based numbers unchanged. Set a query port that does not collide with another process, then allow and forward that value. The principle is the same on Linux and Windows: the command line chooses the game endpoint, serverDZ.cfg chooses the query endpoint, and the firewall must permit the resulting values.
Firewall and router checklist
- Read the launch command: record the exact
-portvalue used by the running service, not the value in an unused example script. - Read
serverDZ.cfg: confirmsteamQueryPortand check for duplicate or misspelled entries. - Allow UDP locally: add inbound rules on the operating-system firewall for the game port, query port and the documented Steam networking range.
- Forward UDP through NAT: map each external port to the server’s current private IP. A rule aimed at an old DHCP address silently fails.
- Check host and router logs: look for dropped datagrams while the server is running and a friend attempts a direct connection or browser refresh.
- Test from outside the LAN: testing from the same local network can produce misleading results because some routers do not support NAT loopback.
- Restart after edits: port changes normally take effect only when the dedicated server process is restarted.
When direct connect works but the browser is empty
1. Separate the two tests
Use a direct connection to the game port first. If players can join by address but the listing is absent, the basic game endpoint is reachable and the query path is the likely fault. If direct connection also fails, investigate the game port, server process, host firewall and router forwarding before changing query settings.

2. Compare configuration with forwarding
Write down three values side by side: the launch parameter, steamQueryPort and the router’s external-to-internal mapping. They must describe the same server. A common mistake is forwarding UDP 27016 because an old guide said “query port” while the current configuration still listens on 2305.
3. Check logs and process ownership
Startup logs reveal whether the server accepted the requested port or substituted another value because it was busy. On a multi-instance host, an old process may still own the port, leaving the newly started instance unreachable. Stop duplicate processes, assign unique values and restart one instance at a time.
4. Account for wrappers and launchers
Management panels and wrappers can generate their own command line or configuration file. Compare the panel’s displayed ports with the files on disk and with the process arguments. A wrapper’s query default may differ from standalone DayZ, so apply the wrapper’s documented value consistently rather than adding every number seen online.

Running multiple DayZ instances
Every instance needs a unique game port and a unique query port. Plan a per-instance map before starting services:

The table is a planning pattern, not a license to reuse 2305 for every process. Choose non-conflicting values, document them in the service name and firewall rules, and verify each process’s startup log. When the base port changes, the troubleshooting guide says the reserved adjacent block shifts as well; recalculate it for each instance.
Practical examples
Single server using the documented example
- Launch with
-port=2302. - Set
steamQueryPort = 2305;. - Permit UDP 2302, UDP 2303–2304 for the documented Steam networking range, and UDP 2305 for queries.
- Forward those ports to the server’s fixed private address.
Single server moved to port 2301
- Launch with
-port=2301, as shown in the Linux hosting example. - Choose and set a query port that is free and explicitly recorded in
serverDZ.cfg. - Recalculate the adjacent reserved range from base port 2301 and update firewall and router rules.
- Confirm the resulting listeners in logs before testing browser visibility.
Wrapper-managed server
- Read the wrapper’s generated command and configuration rather than relying on standalone defaults.
- For the ServerZ example, its README documents 2302/UDP for game traffic and 27015/UDP for queries.
- Forward the wrapper’s actual values and test direct connection separately from browser listing.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Opening TCP only: DayZ’s documented game and query values here are UDP. Add UDP rules; keep TCP only when a specific tool explicitly requires it.
- Forwarding the game port as the query port: They are separate endpoints. Set and forward
steamQueryPortindependently. - Following an old 27016 tutorial without changing the file: Either configure 27016 deliberately and forward it, or use the current 2305 example. Do not mix the two.
- Assuming 2302 is universal:
-portis configurable, and Linux documentation demonstrates 2301. Always inspect the running command. - Reusing ports for a second instance: Assign unique game and query ports and recalculate the adjacent block.
- Testing only from inside the network: Use an external connection or an independent remote player to validate NAT and browser reachability.
- Editing the wrong configuration file: The
-configargument identifies the file the process actually reads. Verify that path and restart.
Answer in one rule
There is no universal “open every DayZ port” list independent of configuration. Start from the running server’s -port argument, read steamQueryPort in serverDZ.cfg, apply the documented adjacent UDP range for that base port, and make host-firewall and router rules match exactly. For an unmodified conventional setup, that means game UDP 2302 and query UDP 2305, with UDP 2303–2304 reserved for the documented Steam networking path.
