WordPress stores the configured database name in the wp-config.php file in the installation’s root directory. Look for a line like this:
define( 'DB_NAME', 'example_database' );
The quoted value, example_database in this example, is the database name WordPress is configured to use. The WordPress configuration template defines DB_NAME as “The name of the database for WordPress.” The setup screen describes the same value as “The name of the database you want to use with WordPress.”

Do not confuse this value with DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, or DB_HOST. Those are separate connection settings. When you need only the database name, copy only the DB_NAME value.
Choose the method that matches your access
| Method | Access required | What it tells you | How direct it is | Relative risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
wp-config.php |
File Manager, SFTP, or SSH access | The database name configured for that installation | Direct | Low when you only read the file |
| Site Health | Administrator login | The database name reported by the WordPress site | Direct | Low when you only view the information |
| phpMyAdmin | Hosting dashboard access | Candidate databases and their tables | Confirmatory unless matched to wp-config.php |
Low for read-only inspection; higher if you edit data |
| WP-CLI | Shell access and a working WordPress installation | The database name and size, or a MySQL console using the site’s credentials | Direct | Low for wp db size; use care in the database console |
If you have access to the site files, start with wp-config.php. If you can log in but cannot access files, Site Health is usually the shortest route. Use phpMyAdmin when you need to identify a database among several candidates, and WP-CLI when you administer the server from a terminal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMethod 1: find the name in wp-config.php
Step 1: open the correct WordPress installation
Use your hosting File Manager, an SFTP client, or an SSH session to open the directory where the site’s WordPress files are installed. The configuration file is normally named wp-config.php and sits in that installation’s root directory.
This first step matters on servers with more than one site. Do not open the first WordPress directory you see and assume it belongs to the domain you are investigating. Match the directory to the site you are actually troubleshooting.
Step 2: locate the DB_NAME definition
Open wp-config.php in a text editor and search for DB_NAME. The line may use single or double quotation marks and may have different spacing, but the pattern is the same:
define( 'DB_NAME', 'your_database_name' );
Read the complete value between the second pair of quotes. Preserve every character, including prefixes, underscores, hyphens, or numbers. That complete value is the configured database name.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 3: record only what you need
If a support request asks for the database name, provide the DB_NAME value only. Do not paste the entire configuration file. It also contains DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD, which are connection credentials. Close the file without changing it unless you have a separate, deliberate reason to edit the configuration.

When this method is the best choice
This is the authoritative answer for a particular installation because it shows what that site is configured to use on its MySQL server. It is also useful when WordPress itself will not load, because you do not need a functioning dashboard to read a file.
Method 2: use WordPress Site Health
Step 1: sign in as an administrator
Log in to the WordPress dashboard for the site in question. This route requires dashboard access; it is not available if you cannot sign in.
Step 2: open the database details
- Open Tools in the WordPress admin menu.
- Select Site Health.
- Open the Info tab.
- Expand the Database section.
- Read the value labeled Database name.
The displayed value is the name WordPress is reporting for that site. This is particularly convenient when a hosting account contains multiple databases and you want an answer without opening files or a hosting panel.
What to do with the result
Copy the database name exactly as displayed. If you later need to inspect the database in phpMyAdmin, use this value to identify the matching entry rather than selecting a name based only on the domain or folder.
Method 3: identify it in phpMyAdmin
Step 1: open phpMyAdmin from your host
Sign in to your hosting dashboard, such as cPanel or an equivalent control panel, and open phpMyAdmin. The exact location of the link varies by host, but phpMyAdmin presents available databases in a navigation area on the left.
Step 2: review the database list
Look through the names shown in the left navigation. A hosting account can contain several databases, so seeing a plausible name does not prove that it belongs to the site you are checking. Database names may include a hosting-account prefix or a project-specific label.
Step 3: confirm a candidate with WordPress tables
Open a candidate database and inspect its tables. Standard WordPress tables include wp_options and wp_posts. Finding those tables is useful confirmation that you are looking at a WordPress database rather than an unrelated application’s database.

Table inspection is confirmatory, not the primary source of the configured name. If several databases contain WordPress-style tables, return to the matching site’s wp-config.php or Site Health screen to determine which one that installation actually uses.
Keep phpMyAdmin read-only while identifying the database
For this task, you only need to read the database list and table names. Do not edit rows, drop tables, or change credentials merely to discover the name. Read-only inspection avoids turning a simple lookup into a data-recovery problem.
Method 4: use WP-CLI from a shell
Run wp db size
If you have shell access to the server, change to the relevant WordPress installation and run:
wp db size
WP-CLI’s wp db size command displays the database name and its size. It reads the connection details used by that WordPress installation, so run it in the site directory you intend to check.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use wp db cli when you need a MySQL console
The command below opens a MySQL console using the credentials from wp-config.php:
wp db cli
This is a way to confirm that the site’s configured connection reaches the expected database. Opening the console is more powerful than simply displaying the name: commands entered there can modify data. If your only goal is identification, wp db size is the safer WP-CLI choice.
Run commands against the correct site
On a server hosting multiple installations, the directory from which you run WP-CLI determines which site’s configuration is used. Verify that you are in the installation you mean to inspect before running either command.

How to tell which database belongs to which WordPress site
A database name is not required to match a domain name, and a directory name is not proof of a database relationship. WordPress documentation describes DB_NAME as the name of the individual database created for that blog on the MySQL server identified by DB_HOST.
Use the site’s own configuration as the anchor
- Identify the exact WordPress installation being investigated.
- Open that installation’s
wp-config.php. - Read its
DB_NAMEvalue. - If needed, compare that value with the database list in phpMyAdmin.
- Confirm that the candidate contains WordPress tables such as
wp_optionsandwp_posts.
This process avoids a common multi-site error: finding a valid WordPress database and assuming it must belong to the domain you are troubleshooting. The matching configuration file is what establishes the relationship.
Why DB_HOST also matters
The database name is meaningful together with the MySQL server named by DB_HOST. Two hosting environments can contain databases with similar names, while the same hosting account can expose several databases. When comparing a configuration file with phpMyAdmin, make sure you are viewing the hosting account and database server associated with that installation.
What to do when DB_NAME is not visible in phpMyAdmin
Check that you opened the correct installation directory
Revisit the site’s file path and make sure the wp-config.php you opened belongs to the WordPress site in question. A server with multiple installations can easily lead you to a different configuration file.
Check the hosting account and database host
Verify that the phpMyAdmin session belongs to the same hosting account and environment referenced by DB_HOST. Looking in a different account can produce a database list that does not contain the configured name.
Do not substitute a guess
If the value from wp-config.php does not appear in the database list, do not replace it with a similarly named database. The mismatch indicates that the installation, hosting account, or server context needs further checking.
Contact the web host when connection details cannot be obtained
When you cannot access the relevant file, dashboard, or database tools and cannot obtain the connection details, contact the web host. WordPress’s setup guidance directs users to their host when the required database information is unavailable.

Finding the database name without cPanel
cPanel is not required. You can use any one of the other access paths:
- File access: open
wp-config.phpthrough your host’s File Manager, SFTP, or SSH-based file access. - WordPress access: use Tools → Site Health → Info → Database after signing in as an administrator.
- Shell access: run
wp db sizefrom the correct WordPress installation.
If your host provides none of these and you cannot log in to WordPress, the host’s support team is the remaining practical source for the connection details. A different hosting dashboard may expose phpMyAdmin under another name or menu, but the underlying identification process is the same: compare the site’s configured DB_NAME with the available databases.
Common mistakes to avoid
Reading the wrong configuration constant
DB_USER identifies the database user, DB_PASSWORD is the password, and DB_HOST identifies the database server. None of those values is the database name. Look specifically for DB_NAME.
Assuming the domain is the database name
Hosts and site owners choose database names independently of domains. A domain can help you recognize a project, but it cannot establish which database WordPress is using.
Choosing a phpMyAdmin database by appearance alone
A familiar-looking label is only a candidate. Open it and look for WordPress tables, then compare it with the site’s configuration or Site Health result.
Editing credentials while trying to read them
Finding the name requires no change to wp-config.php. Avoid saving edits, exposing the password, or running destructive SQL commands while performing a lookup.
Using WP-CLI from the wrong directory
On a multi-installation server, a command run from another project can report that project’s database. Confirm the working directory before using wp db size or wp db cli.
A short verification checklist
- You identified the exact WordPress installation you need.
- You read the value on its
DB_NAMEline, or the Database name field in Site Health. - If you used phpMyAdmin, you matched the candidate to WordPress tables such as
wp_optionsandwp_posts. - You considered the associated
DB_HOSTand hosting account when a name was missing or duplicated. - You shared only the database name and kept
DB_USERandDB_PASSWORDprivate.
For most troubleshooting requests, the final answer is simply the exact value assigned to DB_NAME in the configuration file for the affected site.
