dcspm.dll Errors: Find the Owning OEM Utility on Windows

dcspm.dll is missing, Windows cannot load it, or an application reports that it was not found. The filename usually belongs to an older third-party OEM device-control or hotkey utility, not to Windows itself.

Before repairing anything, establish:

  • Which program triggers the message: a vendor utility, keyboard shortcut service, power-management tool, tablet feature, or another application
  • When it appears: during startup, when opening a utility, or only when launching another program
  • Where Windows expects the file: check the path shown in the error or the program’s installation folder
  • Which architecture the affected program uses: a 32-bit application needs the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows
  • Whether antivirus removed it: review Windows Security’s Protection history
  • Whether the problem began after an update, cleanup, failed uninstall, restore, or Windows upgrade

Do not begin by downloading dcspm.dll from a DLL website or copying it into System32.

What is dcspm.dll?

dcspm.dll is a real but obscure application DLL found in older Intel Common Components and OEM device-control packages. Package inventories place it beside files such as dcscore.dll, dcsvkbd.dll, dcspolicy.dll, dcstablet.dll, and devicecontrolservice.exe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That evidence points to hardware-control software used by laptop manufacturers, including hotkey, keyboard, power, tablet, and device-control utilities. It does not establish one universal product that owns the file. The same filename has appeared in more than one OEM bundle.

There is no reliable evidence that dcspm.dll is a normal Windows component or that it should be present in:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64

The exact publisher, internal description, official product name, hashes, and supported Windows versions are not universally verified. Treat the file as belonging to the program that installed it.

1. Identify the parent utility from the error

The safest repair is to restore the complete application package that originally supplied the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the error details

Read the full message and note the executable named in it. For example, the error may appear while starting a manufacturer’s control center, keyboard utility, launcher, or background service. The executable name often reveals more than dcspm.dll does.

Then check installed applications:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for the computer manufacturer’s name.
  5. Look for entries containing terms such as Hotkey, Device Control, Keyboard, Power Management, Common Components, Control Center, or System Utility.
  6. If the error appears only when opening another application, select that application first. It may be loading an old OEM helper indirectly.

You can also inspect the startup entry:

  1. Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an OEM launcher or device-control entry.
  4. Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.

A path inside a manufacturer-specific folder is a useful ownership clue. A random path under a temporary folder, a user profile download directory, or an unfamiliar program directory deserves additional security checks.

Check the file location

If dcspm.dll still exists:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Search the affected application’s installation folder for dcspm.dll.
  3. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  4. Review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
  5. Compare its folder with the application or service that reports the error.

A valid signature from the computer manufacturer or the software vendor is helpful, but the absence of a signature alone does not prove that the file is malware. The filename has been used in old packages whose metadata is not consistently documented.

2. Repair or reinstall the complete OEM package

Do not replace only the missing DLL. Reinstalling the complete package restores its companion files, services, configuration, and dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try Windows’ repair option first

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected OEM utility.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if shown.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows and test the utility again.

If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use Uninstall. Restart the computer, then obtain the hotkey, device-control, or Common Components package from the computer manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model.

To identify the model:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type msinfo32.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Note System Manufacturer and System Model.
  5. Search the manufacturer’s support site for that model.
  6. Select the package intended for your edition of Windows and the affected hardware.
  7. Download and run the manufacturer’s installer.
  8. Restart when installation completes.

If the manufacturer provides several packages, install the one associated with hotkeys, keyboard control, device control, power management, or system utilities. Do not choose a package solely because its name contains dcspm.dll.

  • Capture or import your videos; plus, author DVDs with chapters, menus and personalized disc labels

  • Save time by quickly burning audio CDs; archive photo and video backups and other large files across multiple discs
  • Make quick photo edits; easily correct and preserve photos with cropping tools, red eye removal, and more

Success means the original utility opens without the error, startup no longer displays the message, and related hardware features such as function keys or on-screen controls work again.

If the utility is obsolete and you do not use its features, uninstalling it may be safer than keeping an unsupported background service. After uninstalling, restart and check Task Manager → Startup apps for a leftover launcher.

3. Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined the file.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for a recent detection involving dcspm.dll or its parent utility.
  5. Expand the entry and review the detected path and action.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • It came from the manufacturer’s original installer.
  • Its location belongs to the expected OEM program.
  • The detection has been verified as a false positive.
  • You can reinstall the complete package instead of restoring an isolated file.

If the file came from an unknown download or an unexpected folder, do not restore it. Run a scan and reinstall the official OEM package instead.

4. Match the application architecture

Older OEM software may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. The correct package must match the affected application, not simply the operating system.

  • On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files.
  • On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
  • A 32-bit application can require an x86 copy of a vendor DLL on 64-bit Windows.
  • A 64-bit application requires the x64 build.

Do not copy an x86 file into System32, or an x64 file into SysWOW64, to force the error away. Install the architecture supplied by the manufacturer for the application and model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the installer refuses to run, right-click it, select Properties, open Compatibility, and use the compatibility troubleshooter. This can help an obsolete installer start, but it does not make an incompatible DLL safe to substitute.

5. Repair drivers and related OEM components

A driver or utility update may have installed an incomplete package or removed an older component.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, System devices, and Software components.
  4. Look for a device with a warning icon or a name associated with the manufacturer’s control software.
  5. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab and review the provider and date.
  7. If the problem began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  8. Otherwise select Uninstall Device, restart Windows, and install the correct package from the manufacturer.

Do not remove an unknown system device merely because its name is unfamiliar. Record its name and driver provider first, and use the model-specific OEM package where possible.

When several device packages must be checked manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while the full version performs the driver installation. Reinstalling the manufacturer’s complete utility remains the definitive fix when that utility owns dcspm.dll.

6. Check for a missing dependency

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that dcspm.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load one of the files it depends on.

Reinstall the parent OEM package first. If the affected program is known to use Microsoft Visual C++ libraries, install the appropriate official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable:

  1. Confirm whether the application is x86 or x64.
  2. Download the matching Microsoft redistributable.
  3. Run the installer.
  4. Choose Repair if it is already installed.
  5. Restart Windows and test the application.

Microsoft provides vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe. Do not assume that dcspm.dll is itself a Visual C++ runtime file.

7. Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption

dcspm.dll is not established as a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker may not restore it. These commands are appropriate when Windows has other symptoms, such as broken servicing, damaged built-in components, or repeated system repair failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected program again. If it reports no integrity violations, that does not rule out a damaged third-party OEM package. Return to the manufacturer’s installer.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether Windows components changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and identify repair issues, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and reinstalling the OEM application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

8. Do not register or manually download the DLL

regsvr32 is intended for registering COM or ActiveX controls. There is no verified evidence that dcspm.dll is a self-registering COM server.

Do not routinely run:

regsvr32 dcspm.dll

It may produce an entry-point or registration error, and it will not repair a missing dependency or restore the OEM service that uses the file. Use it only if the original vendor documentation specifically identifies this DLL as a COM component and instructs you to register it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid copying a downloaded DLL into an application folder, System32, or SysWOW64. A random file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture or version, lack required dependencies, or simply conceal the damaged installation. Use the computer manufacturer’s official support installer, Microsoft’s official runtime packages, or Windows’ built-in repair tools instead.

9. Remove stale startup entries or use System Restore

If the error appears only when Windows starts and the associated hardware feature is no longer needed:

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Disable the stale OEM launcher.
  4. Open Task Scheduler from Start.
  5. Review Task Scheduler Library for tasks named after the old utility.
  6. Disable a task only after confirming that it belongs to the obsolete program.
  7. Uninstall the parent utility from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.

If the problem began after a driver or utility change and the previous fixes fail, use System Restore:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select a restore point from before the change.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Confirm the restore and restart Windows.

System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files. It does not replace the need to install a compatible OEM package if the old utility is no longer supported.

FAQ

Is dcspm.dll part of Windows?

No reliable evidence places it among normal Windows components. It is associated with older third-party OEM device-control packages.

Which program installed dcspm.dll?

There is no single universal owner. The strongest clue is an OEM hotkey, keyboard, power-management, tablet, or device-control utility installed for the computer model.

Can I download dcspm.dll separately?

Do not. The file may be the wrong architecture, version, or origin, and replacing it does not restore its companion service or dependencies.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. A 64-bit Windows installation can still need an x86 DLL for a 32-bit application, and Windows’ folder redirection makes manual copying especially unreliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the module could not be found when the file exists?

A dependency may be missing, the DLL may be the wrong architecture, or the parent application may be damaged. Reinstall the complete OEM package first.

Will SFC restore dcspm.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this file is associated with third-party software.

Is regsvr32 the fix?

Usually no. Use it only when the vendor explicitly identifies the file as a COM or ActiveX component that requires registration.

What if the utility is no longer needed?

Uninstall it, remove its stale startup entry if necessary, and restart Windows. Do not keep an obsolete utility solely to suppress a missing-DLL message.
