The 2014 Twilight Domain Cleric is a flexible support character built around strong darkvision, initiative support and Twilight Sanctuary—a moving aura that can grant temporary hit points or end charm and fear effects. A single-class cleric is a dependable starting point: prioritize Wisdom, plan for concentration and choose a frontline or backline role to suit your party and campaign.
Which version of the Twilight Domain is this?
This guide covers the published 2014 D&D 5e subclass from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. It does not use the 2019 Unearthed Arcana draft, which was playtest material and differs in spells and mechanics. For general 2014 cleric rules, see the 2014 Basic Rules; the published Twilight Domain appears in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. If a transcription conflicts with the book, the book’s rules take precedence.

What the subclass contributes
Twilight clerics combine party support, defensive tools and unusual mobility. Their defining combat feature, Twilight Sanctuary, creates a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on the cleric. Allies can benefit repeatedly while they end their turns inside it, making positioning as important as choosing which benefit to grant.

Build priorities and role
Start with Wisdom and a concentration plan
Wisdom supports your cleric spellcasting and determines how many creatures can receive shared Eyes of Night. Constitution and other durability choices depend on how close you expect to fight and how often you need to maintain concentration. Several domain spells require concentration, and a character can maintain only one concentration spell at a time; access to multiple options does not let you run them simultaneously.
A single-class cleric is a straightforward default because it keeps your cleric progression intact. Treat this as a practical starting point, not a universal optimization ranking: campaign demands and party composition affect which ability priorities make sense.
Choose a position that fits the party
At level 1, Bonus Proficiencies grant martial weapon and heavy armor proficiency, so an armored frontline role is available. They do not dictate a best weapon or require you to fight on the front line. A backline position can also suit a cleric who wants room to use support or concentration spells. Either way, plan where you need to stand when allies’ turns end, especially after activating Twilight Sanctuary.

Twilight Domain spells by cleric level
These spells are always prepared at the listed cleric levels. They do not count against the number of cleric spells you prepare, and the domain does not prevent you from preparing other cleric spells. Several options compete for your single concentration slot, so choose the spell that best fits the immediate situation.
| Cleric level | Always-prepared domain spells |
|---|---|
| 1 | Faerie Fire, Sleep |
| 3 | Moonbeam, See Invisibility |
| 5 | Aura of Vitality, Leomund’s Tiny Hut |
| 7 | Aura of Life, Greater Invisibility |
| 9 | Circle of Power, Mislead |
Think of these as added options, not a fixed rotation. A concentration spell may be the right use of your action when its effect matters most; in another encounter, starting Twilight Sanctuary may provide greater continuing support. The right call depends on the threat, the party’s position and what you expect to happen over the next few rounds.
How the features work in play
Level 1: Bonus Proficiencies
You gain proficiency with martial weapons and heavy armor. These broaden your equipment and positioning choices; they do not require a particular weapon, armor selection or combat role.

Level 1: Eyes of Night
You gain darkvision out to 300 feet, seeing dim light as bright light and darkness as dim light within that range. As an action, you can share this darkvision with willing creatures you can see within 10 feet, up to a number equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum one). The shared darkvision lasts one hour. You can use the sharing feature once per long rest, then use it again by expending a spell slot.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use it when darkness makes visibility a group problem, and remember that recipients must be nearby when you share it. The feature’s own darkvision and the shared version are useful tools, but they do not turn darkness into bright light.
Level 1: Vigilant Blessing
As an action, touch one creature—including yourself—to give it advantage on its next initiative roll. The effect ends after that roll or when you use the feature again. You can set it up before a likely encounter, then move the benefit to another creature if circumstances change. Consider who gains most from acting early, such as a party member whose first turn depends on control or positioning.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Level 2: Channel Divinity — Twilight Sanctuary
As an action, present your holy symbol and create a sphere of dim light centered on yourself with a 30-foot radius. It lasts for one minute, ending early if you are incapacitated or die. When a creature—including you—ends its turn in the sphere, you can grant it temporary hit points equal to 1d6 plus your cleric level, or end one effect causing it to be charmed or frightened.
This is not direct healing. The creature must end its turn inside the sphere to receive the benefit, so the aura’s value depends on where you and your allies can remain as the encounter moves. Choose temporary hit points when damage prevention is the priority; choose the alternate benefit when ending charm or fear is more urgent. The feature’s action cost also matters: compare activating it with casting a spell or taking another useful cleric action.
Level 6: Steps of Night
While you are in dim light or darkness, you can use a bonus action to gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed for one minute. You can do this a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all uses after a long rest. The light condition is essential: this is not unconditional flight, and it cannot be activated in bright light.

Level 8 and 14: Divine Strike
Once on each of your turns when you hit with a weapon attack, you can add 1d8 radiant damage. At cleric level 14, the extra damage increases to 2d8. This is a useful weapon-hit rider, not a requirement to build around weapon attacks.
Level 17: Twilight Shroud
While you and your allies are in the sphere created by Twilight Sanctuary, you have half cover. The protection is tied to the sphere, so its usefulness depends on allies staying within it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Turn-by-turn decisions
- Before a likely fight: Use Vigilant Blessing on the creature most likely to benefit from acting early. If the situation changes before combat, you can use the feature again to move the blessing.
- At the start of combat: Decide whether your action is best spent activating Twilight Sanctuary, casting a spell or doing something else. Consider the value of an ongoing aura against the effect you could create with a spell now.
- Once the sanctuary is active: Stay close enough to allies who need it, and account for the 30-foot radius when the group moves. The relevant position is where each creature ends its turn.
- For each eligible creature’s turn end: Choose temporary hit points or removal of one charm or fear effect based on what is more urgent for that creature.
- When darkness helps: Share Eyes of Night with nearby willing allies who need it, tracking its one-hour duration. Use Steps of Night only when you are in dim light or darkness and flight is useful.
Choices to make for your table
- Frontline or backline: Heavy armor and martial weapon proficiency make the frontline viable, but your role should reflect party needs and how you want to manage concentration and positioning.
- Spell or Sanctuary: Compare the immediate value of a concentration spell with the action spent starting the Channel Divinity and its potential continuing benefit.
- Temporary hit points or condition removal: Twilight Sanctuary lets you choose separately when each eligible creature ends its turn in the sphere.
- Wisdom and durability: Wisdom affects spell effectiveness and the number of Eyes of Night recipients; Constitution and other defensive choices depend on your campaign and intended position.
These are decision points rather than a numerical ranking of builds. The subclass features support several approaches, and the encounter often determines which one is most useful.
