The Artificer has already returned: Wizards of the Coast released the revised class in Eberron: Forge of the Artificer on December 9, 2025. The 112-page supplement updates the class for the revised fifth-edition rules and includes five subclasses: Alchemist, Armorer, Artillerist, Battle Smith, and the new Cartographer.
Where to find the revised Artificer
The updated class is in Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, not the 2024 Player’s Handbook. Wizards describes the 2024 Player’s Handbook as containing twelve classes, while the Artificer’s revised rules were published in the Eberron supplement. The supplement has a physical format and is also listed as a digital edition through D&D Beyond. Availability and format may vary by retailer.
Yes: these are Artificer options for the revised rules commonly called the 2024 edition. They remain part of fifth-edition play rather than a wholly incompatible new game. Wizards says the 2024 revisions are designed to work with existing fifth-edition material.
What changed in the class
The revision reshapes some of the Artificer’s signature tinkering and magic-item features, alongside changes to spellcasting and high-level abilities. D&D Beyond’s overview highlights these differences; consult the published book for complete rules and wording.

Which of the five subclasses fits your play style?
The book includes four revised subclasses and one new option. Their broad play styles differ, so choosing among them is a matter of the role and flavor you want at the table—not simply picking between five versions of the same inventor.
| Subclass | Broad play style |
|---|---|
| Alchemist | Alchemical effects and support |
| Armorer | Arcane armor and defense |
| Artillerist | Battlefield cannons and ranged magical firepower |
| Battle Smith | A construct companion and weapon-focused combat |
| Cartographer | Magical maps, positioning, and support; the new subclass |
How the announcement became a published class
The Artificer’s return was discussed in playtests before the final book appeared. D&D Beyond’s Unearthed Arcana archive lists a revised Artificer playtest on December 17, 2024, followed by a Cartographer-focused Artificer playtest on February 27, 2025. Those were playtest stages; the final published class is in Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, released December 9, 2025.
