The company said it regretted the choice. The edition was announced for Europe and Australia; North America had a separate collector’s edition with different extras. The available contemporary reports do not establish whether the statue was ultimately withdrawn or sold.
Why Deep Silver apologized
The controversy centered on a statue depicting a gruesome zombie torso wearing a bikini. It was announced as part of a limited-run Zombie Bait Edition of Dead Island: Riptide for Europe and Australia.

In a statement reproduced by contemporary reporting on January 15, 2013, Deep Silver said: “We deeply apologize for any offense caused by the Dead Island Riptide ‘Zombie Bait Edition’, the collector’s edition announced for Europe and Australia.” The company added: “We sincerely regret this choice.”
Deep Silver explained that collector editions could differ between regions because it had offices in different countries. The statement acknowledged the offense and regret; it did not, by itself, say the statue had been canceled.

Zombie Bait and Rigor Mortis were different editions
The North American Rigor Mortis Edition was a separate release with different collector items, not another name for the Zombie Bait Edition.
| Edition | Announced region | Reported contents relevant to the controversy | Severed torso statue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zombie Bait Edition | Europe and Australia | Dead Island: Riptide collector edition; the statement described it as a limited run. | Included in the announced edition. |
| Rigor Mortis Edition | North America | Special Edition of the game, zombie hula girl bobble figurine, zombie arm bottle opener, and wooden keychain. | Not among the reported items; this was a different edition. |
The North American contents were reported by Engadget on January 10, 2013. Neither report establishes present-day availability or the contents of any current resale listing.

Was the statue canceled?
The contemporary coverage reviewed here does not confirm the statue’s eventual disposition. One report said the final decision was unclear, and the apology is not evidence that the statue was withdrawn. It is therefore accurate to say Deep Silver apologized and regretted the choice, but not to claim on these reports alone that the statue was canceled, removed, or sold unchanged.
