As described in Valve’s July 30, 2026 matchmaking update, Deadlock Ranked requires 60 Standard wins, at least three heroes unlocked, and 15 Standard wins on every hero you want to use in Ranked. Ranked calibration takes eight solo games; after that, Rank Points determine progression. Ranked parties are limited to solo or duo, subject to rank restrictions.
How Standard and Ranked differ
Standard is the unranked queue: playing it does not change your displayed Rank, and it has no party-size or skill-spread restrictions. Its matchmaking also accounts for your experience with the hero you choose. Ranked is intended for more competitive matches against similarly skilled players and adds seasonal rank progression. These are the rules described in Valve’s July 30, 2026 matchmaking update; live-game rules can change.
Valve says hero preferences are selected before teams are formed, so the matchmaker can consider more players while trying to honor preferences and build reasonable compositions. It also acknowledges that matchmaking can have difficulty when a queue is thin, including in particular regions or rank bands.

The 60 wins are an overall Standard total; the 15-win requirement applies separately to each Ranked-eligible hero. These thresholds are specific to Valve’s July 30 update and may be changed by later patches.
What are the Deadlock ranks?
The named ranks in the update, from lowest to highest, are Initiate, Seeker, Acolyte, Sentinel, Mystic, Ritualist, Emissary, Oracle, Phantom, Ascendant, and Eternus. Each named Rank has six subranks, numbered I through VI. Obscurus is the uncalibrated state, rather than a named calibrated rank.

How calibration works
At the start of a season, players complete eight calibration games. Valve describes the season reset as a soft reset: some relative performance history from the previous season carries forward to help seed initial calibration matches. Calibration games must be played solo, and the highest rank a player can receive when leaving calibration is Oracle VI.
The season schedule is not stated here as a verified current date. The July 30 announcement gave an October 7, 2026 end date, but a later extension surfaced without confirmation in an opened primary announcement. Check the in-game Ranked Hub or current official updates for the active season’s date. The official Deadlock Steam update feed shows a September 16, 2026 minor update, but its surfaced description does not establish whether Ranked rules changed.

Rank Points, promotion, and loss protection
Valve’s July 30 update says a win or loss changes Rank Points by about 250 on average. The actual amount can vary with matchmaker expectations, and win streaks may increase it; 250 is not a guaranteed result for an individual match.
| Progression event | Rule in the July 30, 2026 update |
|---|---|
| Typical win or loss | About 250 Rank Points on average; the amount varies. |
| Ordinary subrank promotion | 1,000 Rank Points. |
| Transition from subrank VI to the next Rank’s subrank I | 2,000 Rank Points. |
| Eternus I thresholds | Adjusted daily by percentile rather than fixed. |
The update also describes loss-protection windows: five games at a full-Rank boundary and two games at a subrank boundary. Its examples are Mystic I at zero points and Mystic III at zero points. This is not a blanket promise that losses cannot cost points or that rank changes are suspended; consult the current in-game rules for how protection applies.

Can you play Ranked with a friend?
Ranked parties can be solo or duo only. In a duo, the players generally must be no more than one full Rank apart. The top-rank exception is narrower: an Eternus player can queue with another Eternus player only, and they must be within three subranks. Calibration games do not allow parties.

Set hero preferences before match formation. In the pre-game area, players can see a breakdown of ranks in the match and may make one swap to a different, unselected hero they have unlocked for Ranked. If an opponent has already taken that replacement hero, choose another. Enemy hero swaps are not shown live; Valve says the feature is intended mainly to help players improve team composition, rather than counter-pick.

What happens if someone abandons?
Valve’s update distinguishes an abandon before five minutes from one after that point:
- Before five minutes: the match is safe to leave and is voided for everyone except the abandoning player and their party. That group takes a loss, and the abandoner receives penalties.
- After five minutes: the leaver and their party take a loss. Remaining teammates may leave safely; if they stay and win, the result counts as a win.
- If every player on the abandoning team leaves: the match ends automatically as a win for the opposing team.
Penalties begin with queue timeouts and can escalate to low-priority games. The official announcement covers additional opposing-team abandon cases; use its full rules before relying on an individual penalty outcome.
Leaderboard activity requirements
As stated in Valve’s July 30, 2026 update, a global leaderboard listing requires 75 games in the previous 30 days. A hero-specific leaderboard listing requires 30 games on that hero in the previous 30 days and at least 100 lifetime wins with that hero. These activity thresholds may be patched.
