Before your first delivery in Death Stranding Director’s Cut, get used to checking your cargo, planning around terrain, and saving stamina for rough ground. These habits make a bigger difference than carrying every tool or package you can find. This spoiler-light guide focuses on the basics that help new porters reach their destinations with cargo intact.
Which version does this guide cover?
The advice applies to the core delivery systems in Death Stranding. Where a feature is specific to an edition or platform, it is identified: Kojima Productions lists Death Stranding Director’s Cut for PS5 and PC on its official product page. The PS5 launch announcement also said PS4 save data could be transferred at launch.
This is not a platform-performance or retailer-availability comparison. Choose the platform you own and check its storefront for current purchase details.
How should you pack cargo?
Check the cargo-weight indicator before leaving. In Kojima Productions’ Director’s Cut beginner’s guide, white indicates a manageable load, yellow means Sam is straining and his movement is adversely affected, and red means the load exceeds his maximum and sharply restricts mobility. An overloaded delivery is not automatically a better delivery: take what the order requires and what you can move safely.
#1 Best Overall

- Expanded content - Make use of additional weapons and vehicles, take on new enemy types and explore new locations such as the firing range and racetrack, featuring extra missions and minigames.

- Review the order and the cargo. Look for special handling instructions before packing.
- Use auto-arrange as a starting point. It helps distribute cargo, but check the result rather than assuming every package is positioned correctly.
- Keep the load near Sam’s center of gravity. A well-centered load helps him stay balanced.
- Recheck unusual packages. Some cargo has positioning constraints. The official guide uses pizza as an example: placing it vertically can damage it.
How do you plan a safer route?
Look over the terrain before committing to a path. A short route across a steep slope, river, or broken ground may be riskier than a longer route with fewer obstacles. The official beginner guide recommends tools such as ladders and ropes for difficult crossings and route markers to help you stay on course.
- Carry a ladder or rope when the route calls for a climb, descent, or crossing; do not assume the terrain will be passable unaided.
- Use route markers to keep track of a planned way through unfamiliar ground.
- Move deliberately on rough terrain instead of sprinting blindly. This is especially useful when carrying a heavy load.
Equipment availability changes as you progress. The Director’s Cut guide discusses additional gear and facilities, but you should not plan a new delivery around an item you have not unlocked yet.

Why does stamina matter for balance?
Stamina is more than a movement meter. Kojima Productions’ regional tips explain that depleted stamina weakens balance control, making trips and falls more likely. Watch your stamina on long or difficult stretches, and slow down when Sam is struggling to keep his footing. A fall can cost time and put cargo at risk.
How can you protect cargo from damage?
Timefall, attacks, and drops can damage cargo. If you need to wait out Timefall or approach a MULE camp, the official tips recommend leaving important cargo in a postbox temporarily. That gives you a place to secure it while dealing with the immediate hazard rather than carrying vulnerable packages into danger.

When human enemies are the concern, plan your equipment around what you have actually unlocked. The official PC beginner’s guide identifies the maser gun as an early Director’s Cut option against human threats. It also describes the cargo catapult as a later-unlocked structure, available at the end of Episode 5—not something to expect at the start.

When you play online and are within Chiral Network coverage, you may encounter equipment and structures placed by other players. Kojima Productions describes this as part of the Social Strand System. A useful structure can make a route easier, and you can give it a like to recognize the help. Treat these as assistance, not a substitute for checking your own cargo, route, and equipment: what you need still depends on the delivery in front of you.
