In an April 23, 2025 announcement, the company said the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 looks would return as an Appearance setting, with a phased global rollout beginning April 24. That is good news for anyone who loved the PS1-inspired startup—but the announcement does not confirm availability in every region today.
It was a PS5 interface theme, not a PS1 game
The PS1-inspired intro was one part of a set of classic console customizations for the PlayStation 5’s user interface. It did not add a PS1 game or change the console’s hardware. The appeal was the familiar look and startup audio: HotHardware’s December 3, 2024 report specifically noted the PS1 design’s startup chime. Read the report.
The nostalgia has a real connection to the original console, too. In a 2019 PlayStation Blog interview, Takafumi Fujisawa, who created the original PlayStation startup sound during hardware development, said: “I created the startup sound.” Read the interview.
Sony first called the customizations limited-time
The December 2024 report described the anniversary designs as available for a limited time, without giving an end date. That raised a reasonable concern for players who wanted the PS1 look to stick around, but it did not mean Sony had announced a specific removal date.

Sony announced the designs’ return in April 2025
On April 23, 2025, Sony said the classic designs would return as an Appearance setting, with a phased global rollout starting April 24. Shuzo Kikuchi, Sony’s VP of Product Management, attributed the decision to the response from players: “Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from our community, we’re happy to bring back the look and feel of the four console designs for players to customize the home screen on PS5!” Read Sony’s announcement.
The announcement confirmed Sony’s plan at that time; it does not establish that the setting is still accessible in every territory as of October 2026. Sony did not include a numeric measure of the community response.

How to look for the PS1 appearance
Sony’s April 2025 announcement identifies Appearance as the setting for the returning classic designs. It does not provide a current, region-by-region availability guide, so the exact option shown on a console may depend on rollout or local availability.
