Death Stranding Director’s Cut is an expanded edition, not a separate story campaign: it adds missions, equipment, delivery tools, racing and replay activities to the original journey. The scale of the difference depends partly on platform. PS5 adds DualSense and display features, while the PC release has its own high-frame-rate, photo-mode and ultrawide support.
What changes in the story?
New Ruined Factory missions
The most direct story addition is a set of missions involving the Ruined Factory. One can become available as early as Episode 2 and uses stealth infiltration to add context to the facility’s mystery. These missions are integrated into the existing journey and appear through progression rather than as a detached expansion. PlayStation’s launch walkthrough describes the early mission and its access point.
The additions can be experienced from the beginning. Kojima Productions advised returning as well as new players to start at the beginning for the intended experience, while still supporting PS4 save transfer to PS5. Its Director’s Cut announcement says additions are revealed as players progress.
How do combat and practice options differ?
More moves and equipment
Director’s Cut adds moves such as jumping knee attacks and drop kicks, as well as the Maser Gun, which can stun enemies. A mission introducing the Maser Gun is available in Episode 2, bringing this option into reach earlier than in the PS4 version. These are additions to the existing combat system, not a wholesale redesign.

Firing Range
The Firing Range lets Sam practice with weapon simulations and take on ranked exercises. It offers a place to try equipment and test skills outside the immediate demands of a delivery. PlayStation’s feature guide covers the range and new combat options.

The additions expand how Sam can carry cargo and cross difficult terrain, offering alternate approaches rather than replacing the core delivery loop.

Racing and ranked challenges
The Racetrack and Roadster add racing, including ranking events. Director’s Cut also lets players revisit boss battles and try ranked activities linked to selected missions and the Firing Range. These are optional replay and competition systems, not mandatory new chapters.

Music and customization
New music from Woodkid, Biting Elbows, Midge Ure and Apocalyptica can be played in the private room and used to customize structures. New cosmetic options include BB Pod designs and backpack patches. The edition also includes Half-Life and Cyberpunk 2077 crossover content that had previously appeared in the original PC version. PlayStation’s feature overview lists these additions.

Kojima Productions announced the PC Director’s Cut for Steam and Epic Games Store on March 30, 2022. Its PC-oriented features include high-frame-rate support, photo mode and ultrawide-monitor support. The announcement does not establish that PC performs better than PS5 on every system, and performance will depend on the hardware and settings used. The platform details and release date appear in the Kojima Productions announcement.

Can PS4 players transfer saves or upgrade?
PlayStation announced that PS4 console save data could transfer to Director’s Cut on PS5. At the PS5 launch in 2021, the announced upgrade offer for existing PS4 owners was $10 / €10. Kojima Productions announced a $9.99 upgrade at the PC edition’s 2022 launch for owners of the base game on Steam or Epic; the base game had to be installed during purchase. Those are historical launch terms, not current prices or proof of present upgrade eligibility. Check the relevant platform store for current availability and terms. - New to the game: Director’s Cut includes the added missions and systems within the journey, so you can start at the beginning and encounter them as they unlock.
- Returning on PS5: Save transfer was supported, but the extra story context is integrated into progression; starting from the beginning is the approach Kojima Productions recommended. Whether to restart depends on whether you want to experience those additions in that progression.
- Choosing between platforms: PS5 has the documented DualSense, audio and graphics-mode features. PC has high-frame-rate, photo-mode and ultrawide support. The official feature announcements do not provide controlled benchmarks for a universal performance comparison.
