Death Stranding makes carrying cargo across a devastated landscape its central activity—and turns that slow, physical journey into a story about connection. It is an unusual action game: its appeal depends less on constant combat than on whether careful route planning, precarious traversal and a surreal narrative sound compelling to you.
What is Death Stranding?
In Death Stranding, you play Sam Bridges, a courier crossing a devastated version of America to deliver supplies and reconnect isolated communities. Kojima Productions describes the Director’s Cut as a game about bringing separated cities and people back together. Connection is both the story’s central idea and a multiplayer-facing feature: its Social Strand System links players through the world, making other people’s traces part of the journey. Kojima Productions’ official product page outlines the premise and system.
Hideo Kojima called it “a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society” in a May 2019 PlayStation.Blog announcement. That description is useful shorthand, but it also signals the game’s unusual priorities: the act of getting somewhere, with cargo intact, is often the main event.
What do you do in Death Stranding?
Plan a delivery
Deliveries give the journey its purpose. You carry cargo between settlements, and the burden shapes how you approach the terrain. Rather than treating the landscape as a corridor between combat encounters, the game asks you to consider how to cross it and what the trip will demand.

Read the terrain and manage the trip
Climbing, navigating rough ground and handling mundane tasks occupy substantial time. A 2019 TIME interview with Kojima describes the contrast between surreal metaphysics and extended climbing and everyday chores. That contrast is central to the experience, not a brief interlude before a conventional action game begins.
Reconnect communities
Deliveries also serve the larger goal of reconnecting isolated communities. The narrative theme and the Social Strand System point in the same direction: progress is about restoring links across a broken world, not simply defeating enemies. The result is a game whose tension can come from exposure, distance and the possibility of a difficult crossing as much as from combat.

Is Death Stranding a good fit?
The deliberate pace is the key question. If you enjoy planning a route, paying attention to the ground and seeing a long trip through, the delivery loop gives those actions a clear purpose. If you want combat to dominate moment to moment, the climbs and routine work may feel slow. That is an audience-fit judgment, not a claim that the game lacks action: Kojima Productions specifically highlighted combat additions in the original PC release.
The story is equally distinctive. Its themes of isolation and connection arrive alongside surreal metaphysics, so readers who want a straightforward, consistently explained plot may find the approach less satisfying than those open to strangeness. Kojima told TIME, “The game’s about connecting the world,” and also observed, “You’re all alone playing the game.” In context, those remarks capture the tension between a story about connection and a journey that can feel solitary.

What does the Director’s Cut add?
The Director’s Cut expands rather than replaces the core delivery-and-traversal experience. Kojima Productions lists added story missions, new locations, delivery assists, combat abilities and other additions. Its PS5 launch announcement says the new content is integrated into the core game, while the PC launch announcement documents the PC release and save transfer. On PS5, the Director’s Cut includes performance and fidelity picture modes, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, 3D audio and a letterboxed wide-screen mode, according to PlayStation’s US product listing. Do not assume those features carry over unchanged to other platforms.

For a first playthrough, the Director’s Cut is the expanded option if it is available on your platform. Choose the original if you specifically want the earlier release’s version of the experience or it is the one you own. The PC original and the Director’s Cut have different feature histories, so confirm the exact edition and platform before buying or installing.
PlayStation’s US listing notes adjustable difficulty, practice mode, pausing, manual saving and basic subtitles for the main story and main characters. Those details apply to that listing; check the relevant storefront for the platform build you plan to play.
How many people have played Death Stranding?
Over 10 million players worldwide — Kojima Productions, 2022 (as of November 8, 2022). Kojima Productions’ milestone includes access through subscription services as well as PS4, PS5 and PC.
