The game is a first-person shooter from Arkane Lyon, set in a stylized retro-future world where you investigate a repeating day and try to eliminate eight targets. Its strongest fit is for players who enjoy exploring, experimenting with routes and piecing together a story from optional material.
What is Deathloop?
Developed by Arkane Lyon and published by Bethesda Softworks, Deathloop combines first-person shooting with a repeating-day assassination premise. You explore an island inspired by the 1960s, look for different paths through its locations and observe how events change at different times of day. The official descriptions emphasize multiple pathways and emergent gameplay, making exploration and experimentation central to the design. Bethesda’s game page and PlayStation’s listing describe the game and its setting.

What do reviews praise?
Exploration with purpose
The repeating day gives exploration a practical role: learning the island, watching how a location changes over time and finding routes that help you reach your targets. The game’s appeal is not limited to moving from one firefight to the next; progress depends on observing and experimenting.

- DEATHLOOP is a next-gen first person shooter from Arkane Lyon, the award-winning studio behind Dishonored
- In DEATHLOOP, two rival assassins are trapped in a mysterious timeloop on the island of Blackreef, doomed to repeat the same day for eternity
- As Colt, the only chance for escape is to end the cycle by assassinating eight key targets before the day resets
- Learn from each cycle - try new paths, gather intel, and find new weapons and abilities, and do whatever it takes to break the loop

A distinctive style and flexible play
The retro-future setting gives the shooter a strong visual identity, while its multiple pathways support different approaches. Players who enjoy testing ideas and discovering how spaces and events fit together are likely to get more from the central loop than players seeking a strictly linear sequence of missions.
What might disappoint some players?
The story rewards optional reading and listening
TIME’s 2021 year-end coverage notes that diaries and audio recordings help explain the story and that the final chapter can feel thin if players skip that material. TIME’s year-end list describes the eight-target objective and the value of observing events across the day. If narrative payoff matters to you, treat optional recordings and written clues as part of the experience rather than as disposable collectibles.

It is not a score you can safely quote without checking
Critic aggregates can differ by platform and change as reviews are added or listings are updated. The search result for Metacritic did not establish a reliable current score and count by platform, so a single number would risk presenting a stale or mismatched figure. Bethesda’s September 17, 2021 roundup highlighted positive reviews, including perfect scores, but it is publisher-selected coverage rather than an independent aggregate calculation. Bethesda’s review roundup is useful as a record of selected launch-period coverage, not as a substitute for a current platform-specific score.
Is Deathloop worth playing?
Deathloop is a strong match if you want a stylish shooter that asks you to explore, observe and try different approaches. Go in expecting to spend time uncovering clues, especially if you want the story’s ending to land. If you prefer a tightly guided shooter or usually skip optional narrative material, its central structure and story delivery may be a less natural fit.

Which platforms can you play it on?
Official listings differ in how they describe availability. PlayStation’s page lists PS5 and PC; Bethesda lists PlayStation 5, Steam and Epic Games on PC, plus Xbox/Windows. Availability can depend on storefront and region, so check the listing for your location and platform before buying. PlayStation’s listing and Bethesda’s page provide the platform details available from those publishers.
