deathmatch.dll belongs to Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas, specifically its dedicated server. It is not a Windows component, graphics driver, DirectX file, or general-purpose Microsoft runtime.

Identify the correct deathmatch.dll

Current Multi Theft Auto server packaging uses a 64-bit module at:

<MTA folder>serverx64deathmatch.dll

The client uses a different file:

<MTA folder>modsdeathmatchclient.dll

That distinction matters. If you only play MTA and see an error for deathmatch.dll, you may be launching an old dedicated-server shortcut, a stale server installation, or a server component that was left behind after an update.

Current MTA source no longer supports 32-bit Windows server builds. Do not combine an old 32-bit DLL with a current 64-bit server executable.

What the error usually means

You may see wording such as:

The program can't start because deathmatch.dll is missing from your computer.

or:

The code execution cannot proceed because deathmatch.dll was not found.

A server log may instead say:

ERROR: Could not load <path>deathmatch.dll -
The specified module could not be found.

That last message does not always mean that deathmatch.dll itself is absent. Windows can display the same diagnostic when a dependency required by the DLL is missing. MTA server packages include companion files such as lua5.1.dll, pcre2.dll, and other libraries.

Before changing anything, note:

• The full path shown in the error
• Whether the program is MTA Server.exe, MTA Server64.exe, the MTA client, or another executable
• Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall, antivirus action, disk cleanup, or folder move
• Whether the file is absent, quarantined, or present but still fails to load
• Whether the installation is under OneDrive or another synchronized folder

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Multi Theft Auto

This is the most likely solution because it restores deathmatch.dll and its companion files together.

Back up the server first

If you operate a server, close MTA and copy the important data before repairing it.

1. Exit the MTA client and stop the dedicated server.
2. Open the MTA installation folder.
3. Copy servermodsdeathmatch to another local folder.
4. Preserve mtaserver.conf, ACL files, logs, and custom resources.
5. Do not overwrite the backup during reinstallation.

Try Windows repair

1. Open Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Choose Apps.
4. Open Installed apps.
5. Find Multi Theft Auto.
6. Select the three-dot menu.
7. Choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair, depending on what Windows displays.
8. Complete the repair and restart Windows.
9. Launch the same server shortcut again.

If no repair option exists, uninstall MTA, restart Windows, and install it again from the official Multi Theft Auto download page. During setup, select Dedicated Server, including Core components and Game module.

Install it in a normal local folder, such as a dedicated MTA directory on a local drive. Avoid OneDrive and other cloud-synchronized locations.

A successful repair should restore the module inside the MTA installation, not inside a Windows directory. Confirm that the relevant server folder contains deathmatch.dll and the other files installed with that same build.

If the problem returns immediately, do not copy back an old DLL. Recheck which executable the shortcut launches and whether the shortcut points to an abandoned older MTA folder.

Fix 2: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch

A DLL can exist and still fail because it does not match the executable that loads it.

Check the shortcut or command used to start the server:

1. Right-click the MTA server shortcut.
2. Select Properties.
3. Review the Target field.
4. Note the executable name and installation path.
5. Check whether the path leads to an old 1.5.x directory or a current server directory.
6. Remove stale shortcuts and create a new shortcut from the repaired installation.

Do not place a 32-bit archival deathmatch.dll beside a current 64-bit server executable. Do not choose a DLL because it has the highest version number on a public file listing. The executable, module, and companion libraries must come from the same MTA package.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 are generally 64-bit installations, but that does not make every application 64-bit. The application architecture determines which DLL and runtime it needs.

Fix 3: Restore the complete MTA package, not just one file

If deathmatch.dll is present but the server still reports that the specified module cannot be found, a dependency may be missing.

First, repeat the official MTA repair or reinstall and select the complete Dedicated Server components. This is safer than guessing which companion DLL is absent.

Potentially involved files can include:

lua5.1.dll
pcre2.dll
pthread.dll
vcruntime*.dll
msvcp*.dll

These names are examples, not a diagnosis. The error text alone cannot identify the missing dependency.

If the message explicitly names a Microsoft runtime such as vcruntime140.dll or msvcp140.dll:

1. Open Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable download page.
2. Download the architecture that matches the MTA executable.
3. Install or repair vc_redist.x64.exe for a 64-bit server.
4. Install vc_redist.x86.exe only when the application requiring it is 32-bit.
5. Restart Windows.
6. Launch the server again.

Installing both Microsoft runtime architectures side by side is normal when different applications require them. Installing the x64 package does not make a 32-bit application use the x64 runtime.

If reinstalling MTA and repairing the named runtime do not help, inspect the complete server log and use a dependency-analysis tool on the copy in the MTA folder. Do not infer the missing dependency from the filename alone.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a newly installed application DLL.

1. Open Start.
2. Search for Windows Security.
3. Select Virus & threat protection.
4. Choose Protection history.
5. Review recent detections.
6. Expand any item associated with the MTA installation.
7. Restore or allow it only if you have confirmed that MTA came from its official installer.
8. Reinstall or repair MTA after restoring the file so the complete package is present.
9. Run a security scan before launching the server.

Do not blindly restore every detected file. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the computer. If the file was downloaded from a random DLL site, delete it rather than adding an exclusion.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They do not normally restore an ordinary third-party MTA DLL. Use them when Windows Update, system files, or multiple applications are also malfunctioning.

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
4. Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Wait for it to finish.
2. Then run:

sfc /scannow

1. Restart Windows.
2. Repair or reinstall MTA again if deathmatch.dll is still missing.

The result should report whether Windows component or protected-file corruption was repaired. If both commands complete without resolving MTA, return to the MTA installation rather than repeatedly running system repair commands.

Fix 6: Update drivers only for a separate hardware error

deathmatch.dll is not a graphics, sound, chipset, or hardware driver. Reinstalling a driver is not a primary fix for this file.

Check drivers only if the MTA failure occurs alongside a separate display, audio, or device problem:

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Sound, video and game controllers.
4. Right-click the affected device.
5. Choose Update driver.
6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
7. Restart Windows and test the hardware separately.

Fix 7: Check the installation path and permissions

A damaged or synchronized folder can prevent MTA from loading its modules correctly.

1. Close MTA and the server.
2. Move or reinstall MTA to a normal local folder.
3. Avoid OneDrive, network shares, removable drives, and cloud-synchronized directories.
4. Right-click the server executable.
5. Select Properties.
6. If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, review it and apply it only when the installer came from the official source.
7. Start the server normally.
8. If required, right-click the executable and choose Run as administrator for a test.

Running as administrator is a diagnostic step, not a replacement for a correct installation. Preserve the server configuration before moving folders, and update shortcuts so they point to the new location.

What not to do

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64

Those folders are for Windows-managed components. MTA should load deathmatch.dll from its own server module directory. Copying it into a system directory can make troubleshooting harder and can cause another program to load the wrong file.

Do not use regsvr32

regsvr32 registers COM DLLs that expose functions such as DllRegisterServer. deathmatch.dll is an MTA server plugin shared library, not a COM component. Running this command will not repair it:

regsvr32 deathmatch.dll

Do not download a standalone replacement

Random DLL download websites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from an unrelated MTA build. A replacement may appear to remove the first message while leaving missing companion files or an incompatible executable.

Use the official Multi Theft Auto installer and select the matching Dedicated Server components. Manual copying is reasonable only when restoring a known-good backup from the identical build into that build’s own MTA module folder.

If the error remains

Collect this information before seeking further help:

• The complete error text
• The full path to deathmatch.dll
• The executable name
• The MTA version or build
• Whether the server is 32-bit or 64-bit
• The complete server log
• Whether Windows Security quarantined anything
• Whether the DLL exists in the expected MTA folder
• Which repair or reinstall steps were completed

This separates a missing file from a missing dependency, wrong architecture, blocked file, stale shortcut, or damaged installation.
