If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that nlsdata0020.dll is missing, the safest approach is to repair the Windows component or the older application that requested it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is associated with Urdu language data and the Windows-era NaturalLanguage6.dll component. The 0020 identifier corresponds to LCID 1056, Urdu. Microsoft documents this component in older Windows and SQL Server Full-Text Search installations. Microsoft’s component documentation does not establish that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain the file.

Do not download nlsdata0020.dll from a random DLL library. An unverified copy can have the wrong architecture, language data, or servicing version, and it may contain malware. Windows Update, Windows repair media, the original application installer, and official SQL Server installation media are the safe sources.
1. Identify when the error appears
Time needed: 2 minutes
First, note whether the message appears:
- Immediately after signing in to Windows
- When opening one older application or game
- When starting SQL Server Full-Text Search
- After a Windows update, antivirus detection, or software removal
Common reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because nlsdata0020.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting nlsdata0020.dll.”
- “Error loading nlsdata0020.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nlsdata0020.dll was not found.”
- “nlsdata0020.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. A dependency of the DLL may be missing, or the application may be loading an incompatible private copy.

If only one application triggers the message, treat that application as the first suspect. If the error appears during startup or across several programs, repair Windows first.
2. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a protected system file or an application file. Check the quarantine before reinstalling anything.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
nlsdata0020.dll. - Do not restore it automatically. Confirm that the file belongs to a genuine Microsoft Windows component or the official application installation.
- If it is a confirmed false positive, use Actions and restore it.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
If the detection is unclear, leave the file quarantined and continue with the repair steps below. A malware scan cannot rebuild a damaged Windows component by itself.

3. Install updates and restart
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
An incomplete update can leave the component store or language files in an inconsistent state.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program again.
On Windows 10, use Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update. If updates repeatedly fail, do not keep copying DLL files into system folders. Proceed to the repair commands.
4. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the most appropriate repair for a system-wide missing or damaged Windows copy.
These commands apply to Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as its source. Microsoft’s SFC repair procedure provides the same order.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to stop temporarily.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that produced the error.
A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error remains, run the commands once more only if DISM reported a successful repair. Repeatedly running SFC without fixing its source will not solve a damaged component store.

If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, use a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a matching Windows installation source. Do not use a random folder or a different Windows edition.
Manually hunting through WinSxS folders and repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed is time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues, while the repair function is handled by its full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the direct repair path.
What if SFC says it could not repair the file
Open Command Prompt as administrator and inspect the servicing log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
If DISM says the component source is corrupted or unavailable, use matching installation media, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair. A downloaded DLL cannot repair the component store.
5. Use the correct procedure for Windows 7 or Vista
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
NlsData0020.dll is primarily associated with Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8-era component stores. Windows 7 and Vista do not use the modern Windows 10 and Windows 11 /RestoreHealth workflow in the same way.
On Windows 7 or Vista:
- Open Start.
- Type cmd.
- Right-click cmd.exe.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart the computer.
- Install applicable Windows updates.
- Run SFC again if the update repaired servicing files.
If SFC cannot repair the component, use original or matching Windows installation media, System Restore, or an in-place repair. Microsoft’s guidance for older Windows versions should be followed instead of applying Windows 10 or Windows 11 DISM instructions blindly. Vista and Windows 7 are obsolete platforms, so upgrading to a supported Windows release is preferable where the hardware and software allow it.

6. Repair the application that requests the file
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Use this branch when the error appears only while launching one old program or game and Windows integrity checks are clean.
- Close the application.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program from its official installer or launcher.
- Apply the program’s latest available update.
- Launch it once using Run as administrator to test the installation.
For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command before reinstalling the entire game. Do not copy a Windows DLL into the application directory unless the software vendor’s official instructions specifically require a private version.

No reliable evidence identifies one popular game or installer as the universal trigger for this filename. The application may be using an incorrect private dependency, or its installation may have been damaged.
7. Check SQL Server Full-Text Search
Time needed: 15–60 minutes
SQL Server Full-Text Search can use related word-breaker and language components. Microsoft documents SQL Server copies under the instance installation, commonly within an MSSQLBinn directory. A SQL Server error should be repaired as a SQL Server installation problem, not by replacing the Windows copy.

- Determine whether the error occurs only when a SQL Server instance or Full-Text Search workload starts.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the installed Microsoft SQL Server entry.
- Select Change.
- In SQL Server Setup, choose Repair, if offered.
- Use matching official SQL Server installation media if Setup requests a source.
- Restart the SQL Server services.
- Test the Full-Text Search operation again.
Do not replace a Windows NlsData0020.dll with a SQL Server copy. Multiple versions can legitimately coexist, and mixing architectures or servicing versions can create a new failure.
8. Check 32-bit and 64-bit loading
Time needed: 5 minutes
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows normally uses 32-bit system components associated with SysWOW64. A 64-bit process uses the 64-bit system component, normally associated with System32.
This naming is counterintuitive:
System32contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.
Do not choose a replacement by file size or by whichever copy appears newest. Microsoft’s historical records show several versions across Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8-era packages, including both x86 and x64 files. These are observed component versions, not a Microsoft standalone download catalogue.
A 32-bit application can fail while the 64-bit Windows copy is intact. Repair the application or Windows component store instead of copying the other architecture into place.
9. Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 registers COM DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point. NlsData0020.dll is language data associated with the Natural Language component, not a COM component that should be registered merely because its name ends in .dll.
Do not run:
regsvr32 nlsdata0020.dll
It is unlikely to repair a missing language-data component and can produce another error. Microsoft documents regsvr32 for registry-based component registration, not as a general DLL repair command.

10. Driver repair is rarely the answer
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Device drivers are not the normal cause of a missing Natural Language component. Check them only if the failure began after a major hardware, chipset, storage, or Windows change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the suspected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not remove random devices or enable optional Windows Features to fix this DLL. Device Manager and Windows Features do not reinstall the Natural Language component.

Should I download nlsdata0020.dll?
No. There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download for this filename. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or the official installer for the application or SQL Server instance involved.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Copying a DLL can create an architecture mismatch, bypass servicing, and hide the original problem. It can also damage a working component installation.
Is nlsdata0020.dll a virus?
The filename itself is associated with a genuine Microsoft Natural Language component. A file with that name in an unexpected application folder may still be counterfeit or altered. Check antivirus results and repair from an official source rather than trusting the filename.

An older application, SQL Server installation, migration, or leftover configuration may still request it. That does not mean every Windows 11 installation should contain the file.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ or DirectX fix it?
Usually not. NlsData0020.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or ordinary game-runtime file.
What if the error returns after SFC repairs it?
