“dedrvpj.dll is missing from your computer.” “The code execution cannot proceed because dedrvpj.dll was not found.” “There was a problem starting dedrvpj.dll. The specified module could not be found.” You may also see “Error loading dedrvpj.dll” or a message saying that the file is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
The 60-second answer
dedrvpj.dll is a Microsoft Windows printer-driver component identified as XPS Pjl Feature Filter. It belongs to the XPS print-filter pipeline, not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, Java, or a game runtime.
The safest fix is to repair the complete printer-driver package:
- Remove the affected printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the printer through Windows or the printer manufacturer’s official driver package.
- Run DISM and SFC if the problem remains.
- Check Windows Security if antivirus software quarantined the file.
Do not download a lone copy of dedrvpj.dll, paste it into System32, or register it with regsvr32.

What dedrvpj.dll does
Windows XPS printer drivers can use filter DLLs to process print data as it moves through the print pipeline. Microsoft describes these filters as DLLs loaded by the print-filter manager according to the printer driver’s configuration.
dedrvpj.dll is publicly identified as XPS Pjl Feature Filter and is associated with the XPS Driver Filter. Related driver-package files include components such as dedrvor.dll, dedrvsc.dll, dedrvzd.dll, dexpsff1.dll, and prndlcl1.inf.
It is normally found inside the protected Driver Store rather than as a standalone application file, commonly in a path resembling:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepositoryprndlcl1.inf_...amd64
A corresponding x86 directory may exist on 32-bit Windows or within a 32-bit printer-driver package.
The exact version, file size, hash, and location can vary with the Windows release, architecture, language, and printer package. Public records show both x86 and x64 copies, so a file with the same name is not automatically a compatible replacement.
Why the error appears
The usual causes are:
- An incomplete or damaged printer-driver installation
- A failed printer-driver or Windows update
- Corruption in protected Windows components
- Antivirus quarantine
- Removal of a printer while part of its driver package remained
- Disk cleanup or failed maintenance
- Migration from an older Windows installation
- A stale printer utility that still runs at startup
Because this DLL is used by a printer-driver pipeline, the process named in the error may be the Print Spooler or a printer installation process rather than a normal desktop program.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the affected printer
This is the best first repair when the message appears while printing, adding a printer, or updating a printer driver.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Install the printer again.
Allow Windows Update to supply the driver first. If Windows cannot find a suitable package, download the driver for the exact printer model from the manufacturer’s official support page.
Do not select a package only because its filename contains dedrvpj.dll. The INF file, catalog, companion DLLs, architecture, and printer model all need to match.
Rank #2
If removing the visible printer does not help, an older driver package may still be installed. Use the printer manufacturer’s official uninstaller, or ask an administrator to remove the unused package through Windows printer-server driver management. Do not delete files directly from DriverStoreFileRepository.
If you regularly have to identify which of many installed drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the complete printer package for the affected model remains the definitive fix when dedrvpj.dll belongs to that package.
How to tell whether it worked
Print a test page from Printers & scanners > your printer > Printer properties > Print Test Page. Also restart Windows once more if the original error appeared during startup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If printing works but the old error still appears, the printer itself may be repaired while a stale startup utility remains. Record the executable named in the dialog and remove or repair that utility through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Fix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when reinstalling the printer does not restore the file or when other Windows components are also reporting errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. SFC may report that it repaired files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair everything.
A successful result does not guarantee that this particular printer DLL was restored. If SFC reports unrepaired files, restart and run the commands again, then reinstall the printer driver rather than copying a DLL manually.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be difficult to track. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show system issues, with repair performed by the full version, but it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the printer’s complete official driver package.
Fix 3: Install Windows updates
A Windows or driver-update failure can leave the printer package incomplete.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates if that section is available.
- Reinstall the printer after updating.
If the problem began immediately after an update, install the current printer package from the manufacturer rather than substituting an older DLL. If the printer’s normal device-driver controls offer a rollback option, use that instead of replacing files manually.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate driver component, but quarantine alone does not prove that the file is safe or malicious.
Rank #3
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the relevant detection.
- Inspect the file path and detection details.
Restore the file only when its path, digital signature, and association with the complete Microsoft printer-driver package are consistent. Do not disable antivirus protection to install a downloaded DLL.
If the file was restored and the error returns, remove and reinstall the printer driver instead. A repaired package allows Windows to restore the file and its catalog information together.
Fix 5: Check the architecture
Public inventories report both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of dedrvpj.dll. A 32-bit file cannot simply replace the x64 copy, and an x64 file is not a substitute for an x86 printer package.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Install the printer package that matches Windows and the manufacturer’s supported driver architecture.
The printer package may also contain separate components for 32-bit application compatibility. Do not mix files from different Windows releases, printer models, or driver packages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. XPS filter DLLs are normally loaded by the print-filter pipeline according to the printer driver’s package metadata.
Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 dedrvpj.dll
It may produce an error, or appear to succeed without repairing the INF, catalog, dependencies, or print pipeline configuration. Reinstall the complete signed driver package instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you copy dedrvpj.dll manually?
Usually, no.
Do not copy an internet-downloaded file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
and do not paste it into:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
Microsoft describes the Driver Store as a protected collection of complete, staged driver packages. Manually adding or removing one DLL can create mismatched dependencies, invalid signatures, and an inconsistent INF or catalog state.

Fix 6: Use System Restore if the damage is wider
Use System Restore when DISM, SFC, and printer reinstallation fail and the issue began after a failed update, cleanup operation, or driver change.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, registry settings, installed programs, and updates. It does not normally remove personal documents, but review the restore-point information before proceeding.
What information to collect if the error remains
Write down:
- The complete error text
- The executable named in the dialog
- The path Windows is trying to load
- The printer make and model
- Whether the issue occurs during printing, installation, login, or startup
- Your Windows edition and system type
- Whether the problem followed an update, printer removal, antivirus event, or migration
- Relevant entries from Event Viewer
- Print-service or Print Spooler events
Open Event Viewer with Win + X > Event Viewer, then inspect Windows logs around the time of the failure. This helps distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency, damaged printer package, or obsolete startup utility.

Is dedrvpj.dll a legitimate Windows file?
It is a real Windows printer-driver component identified as XPS Pjl Feature Filter. Its legitimacy still depends on its path, signature, and package context. A file with the correct name in an unrelated application directory should not be trusted automatically.
Is it part of a specific printer brand?
The file is associated with the Windows XPS printer-driver path and has been found alongside prndlcl1.inf in printer-driver package records. It should not be assumed to belong to one universal printer brand or to every Windows installation.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. dedrvpj.dll is a printer-driver filter, not a normal application runtime component. Repair the printer package and Windows components first.
Will SFC always restore it?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files when its repair source and component state allow it, but it may not reconstruct a damaged third-party printer package. Reinstall the complete printer driver if SFC does not resolve the error.

The printer may already be functional while an old printer utility or installation command still runs at startup. Capture the executable named in the message, then repair or uninstall that obsolete printer software.
Is a DLL download site a safe solution?
No. A lone download can contain malware, target the wrong Windows release, use the wrong architecture, or omit companion files and package metadata. Use Windows Update, the printer manufacturer’s official package, and Microsoft’s repair tools instead.
