dedrvsc.dll is a Microsoft Windows printer-driver component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or ordinary application DLL. It is associated with the Windows printer class-driver package prndlcl1.inf, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the affected printer package rather than download a replacement file.
The file is described publicly as “Color Management System” and is related to printer-driver files including dedrvor.dll, dedrvpj.dll, and dedrvzd.dll. Windows may keep it in the Driver Store, component store, or a printer-driver directory instead of directly under C:WindowsSystem32.

Fix dedrvsc.dll errors in order
Work through these fixes from top to bottom. Stop when the printer or application starts normally.
1. Install Windows and optional driver updates
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A damaged or incomplete printer component is often repaired by a current Windows or printer-class-driver update.

- Return to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install any printer, imaging, or Microsoft class-driver update that matches the affected device.
- Restart the computer again.
Try printing or reopening the program that reported dedrvsc.dll.
If the error remains, do not search for the DLL itself. Continue with the printer reinstall.
2. Remove and reinstall the affected printer
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A failed installation, partial removal, or damaged printer package can leave Windows referencing a missing dedrvsc.dll component.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Click the affected printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- Select the printer when Windows finds it.
- Follow the setup instructions.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Choose Printers & scanners.
- Click the affected printer.
- Select Remove device and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Click Add a printer or scanner.
- Select the printer and complete setup.
Test a print job. If the printer is not detected or Windows installs the same failing package, install the current driver from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Choose the package for your exact Windows edition and processor architecture.
Do not mix an old vendor package with a newer inbox class driver unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.
3. Update the printer through Device Manager
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Device Manager can replace a damaged or outdated printer entry without requiring you to locate a DLL.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale printer drivers: its free scan shows what needs attention, while the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and reinstalling the complete printer package remains the proper fix when dedrvsc.dll belongs to that package.
4. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use this step when Windows reports that the file is missing, corrupted, or cannot be loaded after a printer update or failed servicing operation.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses for servicing. SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the printer again. If DISM says that repair files cannot be found, do not invent a source path. Use matching Windows installation media or another repair source for the installed edition, language, architecture, and build. Microsoft documents the /Source and /LimitAccess options for this situation.
Repeating SFC without addressing the damaged component store usually does not solve a persistent error.
Outbyte PC Repair can make this manual diagnosis easier by showing what needs attention instead of leaving you to repeat SFC and DISM without knowing what changed. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for every dedrvsc.dll case.
5. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a printer component after an update or installation. Do not restore a file solely because its name is familiar.

- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that mentions
dedrvsc.dll, a printer package, or the affected installation. - Check the original file path and detection details.
- Verify that the path belongs to a trusted Windows component or known printer installation.
- Check the file’s digital signature when available.
- Restore it only if you have confirmed it is a legitimate false positive.
If the file was in Downloads, a random application directory, or beside an unknown executable, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Reinstall the printer package instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →6. Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a Windows update, printer-driver update, or printer installation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. It does not replace a full backup.
On Windows 11, another option may be available under Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the feature is offered.
What the error message actually means
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because dedrvsc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading dedrvsc.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “dedrvsc.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because dedrvsc.dll was not found.”
These messages do not prove that the named file is the only problem. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the printer component is missing.

- The application or printer name.
- The exact Windows edition and build.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The path shown for
dedrvsc.dll. - Whether the issue began after an update, printer installation, removal, cleanup, or antivirus detection.
- Whether other printers or applications work.
A 32-bit printer driver can be required on 64-bit Windows. The correct response is to reinstall the complete package with the required architecture, not to copy a 32-bit DLL into System32 or place a 64-bit file into an application folder.
Why copying dedrvsc.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites and random file-sharing pages. An isolated DLL may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or require other files that are still missing. Copying it can also bypass Driver Store permissions and Windows servicing.
Never manually overwrite copies in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64C:WindowsWinSxS- The Windows Driver Store
- An application directory
Use Windows Update, the printer manufacturer’s official signed driver package, DISM, SFC, or System Restore instead.

Is regsvr32 the right fix
Normally, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain ActiveX or COM components. There is no evidence that dedrvsc.dll is an ActiveX or COM library that needs registration.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 dedrvsc.dll
It may produce another error, change nothing, or distract from the damaged printer package. Use the printer reinstall and Windows repair sequence above.

Windows Features are also not normally relevant. Do not enable .NET Framework, DirectPlay, or Visual C++ components unless the complete error identifies a separate application dependency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLikely causes of dedrvsc.dll failures
The most common explanations are:
- A corrupted or incomplete Windows printer-driver component.
- A damaged or obsolete printer package.
- A failed Windows upgrade or servicing operation.
- Antivirus quarantine or a false positive.
- A mismatched driver architecture or package version.
- A missing dependency reported as a missing module.
- An untrusted replacement DLL or malware.
- A stale program reference after a printer was removed.
If no printer is installed and DISM and SFC report no corruption, identify the executable making the request before changing files. A leftover shortcut, service, installer, or application may be referencing an incorrect path.
FAQ
Is dedrvsc.dll a Windows file
The strongest available evidence identifies it as a Microsoft-supplied Windows printer-driver component associated with prndlcl1.inf. It is not a general-purpose runtime library.
Does it belong to a specific printer brand
Not necessarily. It is associated with a Windows printer class-driver package. A particular printer manufacturer’s package may use or install related components, but the filename alone does not identify a specific printer model.
Should I download dedrvsc.dll
No. Restore the owning Windows or printer-driver package through Windows Update, the manufacturer’s official driver, DISM, or SFC.
Is SmartCMS the program that needs repair
That label appears in some public file indexes, but it is not reliable evidence of a separately installed SmartCMS product. Treat the printer-driver ownership as the useful lead.
Why is dedrvsc.dll not in System32
Windows may store printer components in the Driver Store, component store, or a printer-driver folder. A missing file error does not mean that manually placing a copy in System32 is correct.
What if the error returns after all repairs
Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and review printer installation or servicing events. Note the exact printer package being installed, then remove that package and obtain a current official driver. If the issue began after a recent change, use System Restore or Windows’ repair reinstall option.
