olmapi32.dll is missing, OLMAPI32.dll was not found, and Failed to load the MAPI library usually mean that Outlook’s installation is damaged or mismatched. An olmapi32.dll crash can also identify Outlook or an Outlook-integrated application as the failing component.
The 60-second answer
Do not download olmapi32.dll from a DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. This file is an Outlook Extended MAPI component supplied with Microsoft Office or Outlook, and its correct version depends on the Office edition, update level, language, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.

The safest repair path is:
- Close Outlook and other Office programs.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the installed Office product.
- Select … > Modify.
- Run Quick Repair.
- If the error remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair.
- Restart Windows, then install pending Office updates.
Microsoft’s Office repair procedure is the correct starting point because it restores the complete, matching installation rather than replacing one file in isolation.
What olmapi32.dll does
olmapi32.dll belongs to Outlook’s MAPI implementation. MAPI, or Messaging Application Programming Interface, allows Outlook and compatible programs to work with mail, profiles, messages, folders, and other Outlook messaging functions.
#1 Best Overall
Microsoft Outlook update manifests list Olmapi32.dll alongside Outlook files such as outlook.exe, mspst32.dll, mapiph.dll, and outlmime.dll. The Microsoft Outlook file manifest also shows that Microsoft distributes different 32-bit and x64 builds.
This is why a legitimate copy is normally under an Office directory rather than C:WindowsSystem32. Older installations may use a path such as:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14OLMAPI32.DLL
Later Office installations commonly use an Office16 directory, but the exact location varies between Click-to-Run, MSI-based, 32-bit, and 64-bit installations.

Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365
This is the most likely fix for a missing or damaged file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Save your work and close Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and other Office applications.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office product.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Modify.
- If Windows asks for permission, select Yes.
- Choose Quick Repair, then select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Outlook.
Quick Repair is relatively fast, but it may not replace every damaged installation component. If the same message appears:
- Return to the Office entry in Installed apps.
- Select … > Modify.
- Choose Online Repair.
- Select Repair and allow the process to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Online Repair reinstalls more of Office and may require an internet connection. It is the preferred escalation when Quick Repair does not restore olmapi32.dll.
Rank #2
A successful repair should allow Outlook to start without the DLL message. If a third-party application still fails, test Outlook itself first. If Outlook works but the other program does not, repair or update that program as well.
Fix 2: Update Office and Outlook
A damaged file is not the only possibility. Microsoft has documented Outlook crashes involving OLMAPI32.DLL and supplies fixes through later Office builds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Outlook opens:
- Start Outlook.
- Select File.
- Select Office Account or Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Choose Update Now.
- Restart Outlook after the update completes.
If Outlook will not open, start Word instead and use File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. If Office applications do not offer update controls, the installation may be managed by an organization or by a different deployment method. Contact the person who manages Office updates rather than installing files from an unofficial source.
Microsoft’s known-issue page for Outlook crashes involving OLMAPI32.DLL is more reliable than a hard-coded version number because Office build numbers change.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
MAPI applications must use a compatible architecture. A 32-bit MAPI application cannot load a 64-bit MAPI DLL, and the reverse combination is also unsupported in the relevant scenarios. Microsoft’s MAPI architecture guidance explains the compatibility boundary.
To check Outlook’s architecture:
- Open Outlook if possible.
- Select File.
- Select Office Account.
- Select About Outlook.
- Read the line showing 32-bit or 64-bit.
If Outlook will not open, check the architecture of Word under File > Account > About Word. Office applications in the same installation normally use the same architecture.

A 32-bit CRM, scanner connector, synchronization utility, or mail add-in may require a matching 32-bit Outlook/MAPI environment. Do not solve an architecture mismatch by copying a DLL from another computer. Repair or reinstall the dependent application using the architecture supported by its vendor.
Fix 4: Remove conflicting Office installations
Two Office installations can leave incompatible MAPI files and registration information behind. This is especially relevant after replacing an older Office edition with Microsoft 365.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for
Office. - Identify obsolete or duplicate Office installations.
- Uninstall the edition you no longer use.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Online Repair on the Office installation you intend to keep.
- Restart again and test Outlook.
Do not remove an Office installation until you know which one contains the Outlook account and data you need. If the list is unclear, record the product names first and ask your administrator or Microsoft support to identify the intended installation.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an Office file. Review the security product’s quarantine or protection history for olmapi32.dll.
Only consider restoring a file when all of these conditions are true:
- It is identified as a Microsoft Office file.
- It is located inside the legitimate Office installation.
- The security product’s record clearly identifies the detection.
- Your security administrator or trusted support process approves the restoration.
After restoration, repair and update Office. If the file is immediately quarantined again, do not permanently disable protection. Investigate the detection, update the security product, and contact its support team if necessary.
Fix 6: Test Outlook without add-ins
If Outlook opens in Safe Mode, an add-in may be triggering the failure.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
outlook.exe /safe
- Press Enter.
- If Outlook opens, select File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins.
- Select Go.
- Clear the checkboxes for add-ins, then select OK.
- Restart Outlook normally.
- Re-enable add-ins one at a time until the failing one is identified.
Update or uninstall the add-in that causes the crash. This is particularly important when Event Viewer names OLMAPI32.DLL as the faulting module but Outlook itself is installed correctly.
If Safe Mode does not help, continue with Office repair and profile testing. Microsoft’s Outlook troubleshooting guidance covers these recovery paths.
Fix 7: Create a new Outlook profile or repair a PST
A damaged profile or data file can make Outlook appear to have a DLL problem.
To create a profile:
- Close Outlook.
- Open Control Panel.
- Set View by to Small icons.
- Select Mail (Microsoft Outlook).
- Select Show Profiles.
- Select Add.
- Enter a profile name.
- Configure the account.
- Select Always use this profile, choose the new profile, and select OK.
- Start Outlook.
If the new profile works, the original profile was likely damaged.
For a damaged PST file, use Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool, SCANPST.EXE. Its location varies by Office installation, so search the Office directory for SCANPST.EXE rather than downloading it. Microsoft documents the process in Repair Outlook data files.
Do not delete an OST or PST until you have confirmed that the data is stored elsewhere or backed up.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
olmapi32.dll belongs to Office, so Windows component repair is not the first response. Use it when Office repair fails and other Windows applications also report missing or corrupted components.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run Office Online Repair again if Outlook still fails.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system file repair instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
Running these commands repeatedly without checking what changed is rarely useful. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for component problems and show what needs attention, while repair actions require the full version; Office Online Repair remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Outlook.
Fix 9: Update a related device or application driver
Drivers are not the normal source of olmapi32.dll, but a third-party application that integrates with Outlook may also depend on a scanner, printer, security device, or synchronization component. Update that component only when its error or vendor documentation points to it.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing application.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer the device manufacturer’s approved driver when Windows cannot find one. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers without manually hunting through device categories, while driver installation through the full version is optional; repairing or reinstalling the Outlook-integrated application remains the definitive fix for its own MAPI dependency.

Do not begin with:
regsvr32 olmapi32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation and COM self-registration documentation describe that registration model.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Outlook repair installs and configures its MAPI components as part of the Office product. Registering the file manually will not repair missing companion files, an architecture mismatch, a damaged profile, or two conflicting Office installations. It can also produce a misleading error that sends troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
Do not install the legacy Exchange MAPI package as a guess
The Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects package is a separate legacy runtime. It is relevant only when a specific application explicitly requires that runtime.
It is not a general replacement for Outlook’s olmapi32.dll. Microsoft’s documentation warns that standalone MAPI and Outlook MAPI can be incompatible in some scenarios. Install it only according to the requirements of the dependent application and its administrator.
Best Value
Windows Features also will not normally restore this file. Do not enable random Windows components looking for “MAPI” or “Outlook.” Repair the Office product that installed the file.
When to reinstall Office
Use a clean Office reinstall when:
- Online Repair completes but the same error returns.
- Multiple Office versions were partially removed.
- Office files are missing from the installation directory.
- Outlook fails for every Windows user profile.
- Updates cannot install or repeatedly roll back.
Record account and product information first. Uninstall the obsolete Office installation, restart Windows, then reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office from the official Microsoft account or deployment source. After installation, apply updates before testing third-party MAPI software.
Frequently asked questions
Is olmapi32.dll a Windows system DLL?
No. It is normally supplied with Outlook or an Office installation. A copy under an Office directory is expected; a random copy in System32 is not a safe repair.
Can I download the file separately?
Do not use generic DLL download sites sites. The file must match Outlook’s build, architecture, language, and related components. Repair or reinstall Office from Microsoft instead.
Does olmapi32.dll work with both 32-bit and 64-bit Outlook?
Microsoft supplies architecture-specific files. The Outlook installation and the MAPI application using it must be compatible. Confirm the bitness of both before changing software.
Why does Event Viewer name the DLL if Outlook is installed?
A faulting module is not necessarily a missing module. The crash may come from an Outlook update issue, add-in, profile, data file, or incompatible integrated application.
Will System Restore fix it?
System Restore may help when the failure clearly began after a recent installation or change, but it is not a specific olmapi32.dll repair. Try Office repair, updates, profile testing, and a clean reinstall first.
What information should I collect before asking for support?
Record the exact error text, Outlook and Office architecture, Office product name, whether Outlook itself opens, the time the problem began, recent Office changes, Event Viewer fault details, antivirus quarantine results, and the name of any third-party MAPI application that also fails.
