Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor is a single-player auto-shooter: your weapons fire automatically, so your main jobs are moving, mining, choosing upgrades, completing the mission objective, and getting back to the Drop Pod. For your first dive, keep a route open, mine with a purpose, and make upgrade choices that fit the weapons you have—not a supposedly universal “best build.”
How a dive works
Each run combines combat and mining in a procedurally generated cave. Enemy waves keep pressure on you while you work toward the company objective and, ultimately, the Drop Pod. The goal is not simply to survive indefinitely: make progress on the objective and plan for extraction. The Steam listing describes the auto-shooter loop as running and mining while your weapons blast automatically.

Keep moving with a destination
Because aiming and firing are automatic, movement is one of your most important decisions. Avoid standing still while a swarm closes in. Move toward open ground or a route you can continue through, keeping enough space to avoid being boxed in. A short change of direction can help preserve room to move; retreating blindly into a dead end can make the crowd harder to manage.
Choose where you are going before you cross the cave. That destination might be an objective, a useful patch of minerals, an open area, or a route back toward the Drop Pod. If the swarm is following, prioritize space and a clear exit over squeezing in one more detour.

Mine routes that give you options
Mining is useful beyond collecting resources: cutting through cave walls can create routes you can use to escape, form a bottleneck, or loop around pursuing enemies. An independent PC Gamer review describes using tunnels and obstacles to influence enemy pursuit. Treat this as a tactical option, not a guarantee that every enemy will respond in the same way.
- Look ahead before digging. Check whether the tunnel opens into useful space or leaves you with only one narrow way out.
- Keep an exit in mind. A shortcut is less useful if it ends in a pocket with a swarm at the entrance.
- Use terrain deliberately. A bottleneck or loop can help shape how you move through a pursuing group, but do not rely on terrain to stop every threat.
Read the cave as well as the swarm
Cave features can change how safe or practical a route feels. The PC Gamer review notes biome-specific hazards and features such as lava, bouncing mushrooms, and regrowing thorny vines. These examples do not appear in every biome; pay attention to what is actually in the cave you are exploring. A route that looks short may be awkward if its terrain limits your movement or forces you into danger.

Choose upgrades for the run you have
You can add weapons and tune them with stat upgrades and overclocks. The review describes runs with up to four guns, but that does not establish a single best beginner combination. Instead, read what each choice changes and consider how it fits the weapons already available in your run. A choice that supports your current setup may be more useful than one picked because it is reputed to be strongest in every situation.
- Check which weapon or attribute an upgrade affects.
- Think about whether the change complements your current weapons or fills a gap in the run.
- When choosing an overclock, treat it as a way to shape the build rather than an automatic upgrade for every situation.
Specific rankings and build recommendations can change with game updates, and the available sources do not establish a current universal priority order. Use a build guide only when it matches your game version and the options you actually have.

Expect a solo experience
This spin-off is designed for one player, so plan to manage movement, mining, combat, and the objective yourself. In its Steam FAQ, developer Funday Games says multiplayer is intentionally not planned, in contrast with the original Deep Rock Galactic. Do not count on a teammate joining to rescue a difficult first dive.

The developer’s FAQ, updated with announcements through April 28, 2026, distinguishes paid Heavy Duty expansion content from free-update additions. Heavy Duty is listed as adding the Demolisher class and three class mods, 11 weapons, Egg Hunt mission content, and the Glacial Strata biome. The FAQ separately lists free-update additions including Endless mode, new mastery reward milestones, expanded tags and tag synergies, upgrade cards, and optimizations. These are optional content details, not prerequisites for learning the base-game loop; check the current Steam listing for availability.
