Critics were broadly positive about Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor at its 1.0 release, especially its mining-based twist on the survivor-like formula. Metacritic’s PC page displayed an 86/100 from 11 critic reviews as of October 8, 2026, a favorable but relatively small sample. Reviewers also point to solo-only play, difficulty, repetition, and progression grind as potential drawbacks.
What is the critic score for Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor?
Metacritic’s PC listing showed 86/100 from 11 critic reviews on October 8, 2026, with the rating classified as “Generally Favorable.” The page also displayed a user score of 7.3/10 from 59 ratings; that is a separate user-rating measure, not part of the critic aggregate. Both figures are a dated snapshot, and the critic sample is small enough that additional reviews could change the aggregate. See Metacritic’s PC summary.

The visible critic scores on Metacritic ranged from 80 to 95. The aggregate is useful as a quick temperature check, but the number of reviews and differences in individual critics’ priorities matter: it does not mean every reviewer agreed on the game’s strengths or weaknesses. Metacritic’s critic list shows the individual entries.

Mining makes the survivor-like loop more tactical
The game’s clearest point of distinction is that the cave is not just a backdrop. While the dwarf’s weapons fire automatically, players mine through destructible terrain, choose routes, and can use tunnels and bottlenecks to shape how they meet pursuing swarms. That adds a spatial decision to the familiar loop of moving, surviving, and improving a build: choosing where to go can matter as much as choosing which upgrade to take.
Progression gives runs reasons to continue
Reviewers highlight weapon upgrades, overclocks, mission objectives, and the variety of runs as parts of a compelling replay loop. PC Gamer’s Robin Valentine gave the 1.0 release 90/100 on September 17, 2025, praising its confident development of the early-access foundation. Valentine’s review called it “Vampire Survivors is no longer the king of the genre.” That is one reviewer’s verdict, not a claim of unanimous critical consensus. Read PC Gamer’s review.
It carries the series’ cave atmosphere into another genre
Some reviewers see the game’s humor, class identity, and oppressive cave setting as more than a borrowed theme. A Game8 review listed by Metacritic described it as “more than just another Vampire Survivors clone,” emphasizing its connection to the co-op original’s humor, class personality, and cave atmosphere. That is Game8’s characterization, rather than a statement shared by every critic.

What are the main criticisms?
It is a solo game, not co-op Deep Rock Galactic
Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor is a single-player auto-shooter, not a cooperative mode or substitute for the original game’s team play. The change in format is central to how it feels: the focus is on one player managing movement, mining, and upgrades amid automatic combat. Reviewers who value the original’s co-op identify that absence as a meaningful trade-off.
Difficulty and endgame progression can wear on players
Some reviews flag a steep difficulty curve, balance concerns, or an endgame grind. Those are reviewer-specific reservations, not a finding that every critic regarded the difficulty or progression the same way. If you prefer a consistently relaxed run or dislike repeated attempts to advance, those criticisms are worth weighing against the game’s upgrade-driven replay loop.

Runs and menus may feel repetitive or hard to parse
Some critics point to repetition among missions and biomes, while others note that the menus and amount of information can be daunting for newcomers. These concerns sit alongside praise for mission variety and progression: whether the loop stays engaging depends in part on how much you enjoy repeating runs and learning a dense set of systems.
How does it compare with Vampire Survivors?
Both games belong to the survivor-like, auto-shooter family: combat is built around movement and survival while weapons attack automatically. Survivor’s defining difference in reviews is its destructible cave terrain. Mining lets players open routes and shape encounters, making navigation and positioning a more explicit part of a run. Its weapons, upgrades, overclocks, and mission objectives also give progression a Deep Rock Galactic-specific frame.

That distinction does not establish that one game is better for every player. PC Gamer’s comparison was a strong endorsement of Survivor, while other reviewers’ reservations about difficulty, repetition, and grind show why genre preference and tolerance for repeated runs still matter. The format differs too: Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor is single-player, whereas the original Deep Rock Galactic is known for cooperative play.
Does the review picture reflect the finished game?
Yes: the cited PC Gamer review and the Metacritic critic snapshot concern the 1.0 release, not only the earlier Early Access build. The game entered Early Access on February 14, 2024, and its full release was September 17, 2025. Steam lists Funday Games as developer and Ghost Ship Publishing as publisher, and describes the game as a single-player title featuring automatic firing, mining, upgrades, procedural caves, and mission objectives. Is Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor worth considering?
The critic response suggests it is a strong fit for players who enjoy survivor-likes but want terrain manipulation and mining to influence how each run unfolds. It is a less natural choice if you are mainly looking for co-op with friends, dislike repeated progression, or find dense menus and steep difficulty frustrating. The 86/100 Metacritic figure supports a broadly favorable reception, but its 11-review PC sample should be read as a snapshot rather than a definitive measure of every player’s experience.
