defannty.dll is an old third-party component associated with legacy Symantec and Norton software, not a normal Windows file. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, identify the Norton program calling it before downloading or copying anything.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, answer these three questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Which program shows the error? Note the executable name in the message, window title, Task Manager, or Event Viewer.
- When does it appear? Does it happen during startup, when Norton opens, after an uninstall, after restoring an old system image, or when launching another application?
- Is the caller 32-bit or 64-bit? A 32-bit Norton component can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit dependencies in the application’s own folder.
Do not assume that a message mentioning defannty.dll proves that modern Norton 360 still uses it. No current public Norton documentation identifies a current product that specifically requires this file.

Those details are historical archive metadata, not a current Norton file manifest. The filename alone cannot prove that a copy on your computer is genuine.
This is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or modern Visual C++ Redistributable file. It should not normally be copied to either:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A genuine copy would normally be alongside the older Norton or Symantec program that installed it.
Fix 1: Repair or remove the Norton installation
This is the most likely solution when the error appears as Norton starts, updates, or launches after an interrupted installation.
Check installed programs
- Press Windows+I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Norton and Symantec.
- Select any clearly related product and choose Uninstall or Modify.
On older Windows installations:
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Norton or Symantec entry.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
If repair is available, run it first and restart Windows. Then launch the same program that produced the error.
If you no longer need the old product, remove it instead. Restart after the uninstall completes. A partial removal can leave a service, scheduled task, shortcut, or startup entry that continues requesting defannty.dll.
Use Norton’s official remover when normal uninstall fails
If the Norton entry is damaged, missing, or refuses to uninstall, use Norton’s official Remove and Reinstall utility or its official Norton 360 Remover. Download the utility only from Norton’s own support or download pages.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run the utility, then choose the option corresponding to your goal:
- Remove & Reinstall or Reinstall if you still use Norton.
- Remove Only if you want the old installation gone.
For older Norton 22.xx products, the documented path is Advanced Options > Remove Only > Remove. Restart when prompted, then install a currently supported Norton product only if you still want one.

The fix worked if the error no longer appears during startup or when opening Norton. If the message remains after removal, continue to the stale-startup checks below.
Fix 2: Find and disable a leftover Norton launcher
A broken startup reference is common after restoring an old disk image, migrating Windows, or uninstalling security software incompletely.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for clearly identified Norton or Symantec entries.
- Right-click an orphaned or disabled-looking entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable random entries just because they have a missing file warning. Confirm that the publisher, command line, and file path relate to the removed Norton installation.
Check scheduled tasks
- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names clearly identify Norton or Symantec.
- Select a task and inspect Actions to see which executable it launches.
- Disable only a task that points to an abandoned Norton installation.
- Restart and test again.
Check services
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for a clearly identified Norton or Symantec service.
- Open its properties and note the Path to executable.
- If it belongs to software you intentionally removed, stop the service and set Startup type to Disabled.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete registry keys or services manually unless you have confirmed their ownership. If the error persists, identify the calling executable through Task Manager, Event Viewer, or the application’s own log before making further changes.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have quarantined a legitimate legacy file, or it may have detected a suspicious copy using the same name.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
defannty.dll. - Expand the event and inspect its path, detection details, and originating program.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- It came from a Norton installation you recognize.
- The path is inside that installation’s folder.
- The file has valid Symantec provenance or a trustworthy backup source.
- You still need the associated program.
If the file came from a temporary folder, Downloads, cracked software, or an unrelated application, leave it quarantined. Run Scan options > Full scan. If you suspect active compromise, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same screen.
A filename that once belonged to Symantec does not make every copy safe.
Fix 4: Verify the file path, signature, and caller
If a copy exists, do not judge it by its name alone.
Inspect the path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Find the program reporting the error or the process that loads the file.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Check whether the folder belongs to an old Norton or Symantec installation.
A copy in a Norton program directory is more plausible than one in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary directory, or an unrelated game folder.

Check the digital signature
- Right-click
defannty.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
The absence of a signature is not conclusive for a very old file, but it means you should not restore or distribute the file solely because its name matches the error.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCheck the application architecture
A 32-bit program normally loads 32-bit DLLs from its own installation environment. A 64-bit program cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a replacement. Do not move the file between application folders or between System32 and SysWOW64 to test different combinations.
If the error names a specific Norton executable, repair that Norton installation. If it names a game or unrelated program, treat the file as a possible bundled, modified, or malicious copy and verify the entire application installation instead.
Fix 5: Reinstall the original application
If the caller is a legacy Norton component and repair fails:
- Back up any product settings or license information you still need.
- Uninstall the damaged Norton or Symantec product.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official Norton remover if remnants remain.
- Restart again.
- Install a currently supported Norton product from Norton’s official download source, if appropriate.
A modern installer may not recreate a historical component such as defannty.dll. That is expected. The goal is to replace the obsolete installation with a supported product, not to force an old DLL into a new one.
If the caller is not Norton, reinstall that specific application from its official installer or platform. Do not use a loose DLL download as a substitute for the application’s installer.
Fix 6: Repair Windows only when Windows itself is damaged
Because defannty.dll is not a Windows component, System File Checker will not normally restore it. Use Windows repair commands when you also see corrupted system files, failed Windows components, repeated servicing errors, or several unrelated applications failing.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses. If both commands complete successfully but the defannty.dll message remains, return to the Norton or application repair steps.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without checking which program requests the file will not rebuild a third-party Norton installation.

If manually hunting through Windows components and repeating repair commands is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and show what it found before repair; the full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the Norton program remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Do not update drivers or Windows Features for this file
defannty.dll is not known as a graphics, audio, chipset, DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ runtime file. Installing random runtimes, enabling Windows Features, or updating Device Manager entries is unlikely to restore it.
Use Device Manager only if you also have a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver or Properties > Driver.
Do not expect a display or motherboard driver update to repair a missing Norton component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you are already checking several devices manually and cannot tell which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; its full version performs installation, but a driver update is not the definitive fix for a defannty.dll error.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run this as a generic missing-DLL fix:
regsvr32 defannty.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A legacy antivirus implementation DLL may not expose that function. The result can be:
DllRegisterServer in defannty.dll failed.
Registration also does not restore missing dependencies, repair a broken Norton installation, or create the startup configuration the application expects.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s installer documentation specifically requires it and supplies the exact DLL path. Do not register a file downloaded from an untrusted source.

Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
Avoid generic DLL download pages and file-sharing links. A downloaded replacement may have:
- The wrong architecture.
- An incompatible historical version.
- A modified or unsigned binary.
- Missing dependencies.
- A location that creates DLL search-order or sideloading risk.
Copying it into System32 may hide one message while leaving the damaged Norton installation untouched. The safe sources are the original verified installer, a trusted backup made from that installation, or the vendor’s official repair process.
When System Restore is appropriate
System Restore is not a first-line fix for this error. Restoring an old restore point or disk image can bring back an outdated Norton launcher without restoring every dependent file, creating the same error again.

Is defannty.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with old third-party Symantec and Norton components. It should not normally be stored in a Windows system directory.
Which Norton product installed it?
Reported archive metadata connects it with Norton AntiVirus Core Technology and older Shared LiveSubscribe Components. The exact Norton generation cannot be inferred from the filename alone.
Is version 5.3.0.180 confirmed?
It is reported by third-party file archives, along with historical size and copyright details. Treat those values as archive metadata rather than a current vendor-verified specification.
Should I restore the file from quarantine?
Only if it clearly belongs to a legitimate Norton installation, has trustworthy provenance, and the associated product is still required. Otherwise leave it quarantined and scan the computer.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat if the message appears after uninstalling Norton?
Check Startup apps, Task Scheduler, and Services for an orphaned Norton or Symantec entry. Remove the old installation cleanly, restart, and disable only confirmed leftover launchers.
What if the message names another program?
Do not assume that program is legitimate or that Norton is involved. Inspect the executable path and signature, then repair or reinstall the named application from its official source.
Will SFC repair defannty.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not third-party application files. Use it only for broader Windows corruption symptoms, after DISM.
Do I need regsvr32?
Usually no. Registration is relevant only when the DLL is designed for it and the vendor specifically instructs you to register it.
Why does “the specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
Windows may be reporting a missing dependency required by defannty.dll, not necessarily the DLL itself. Repairing the original Norton installation is safer than copying individual dependencies.
What does a successful repair look like?
The named program launches without the error, the startup warning disappears after a restart, and no orphaned Norton task or service continues requesting the file.
