defaultargs.dll is a private game file used by Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, not a standard Windows component. If defaultargs.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Siege installation through the launcher that owns it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest order is:
- Close Siege and its launcher.
- Verify the game files through Steam or Ubisoft Connect.
- Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Reinstall Siege through the same platform if verification fails.
- Investigate Windows, driver, storage, or account problems only if the game repair does not work.
Fix 1: Verify Rainbow Six Siege through its launcher
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
A missing or damaged game file is the most likely cause. Verification compares the installed files with the platform’s copy and downloads files that are missing or corrupted.

Steam
- Close Rainbow Six Siege.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish completely.
- Restart Steam and launch Siege from Steam.
Steam may report that files were reacquired or replaced. That is the expected result if defaultargs.dll was missing or damaged. Test the game before changing anything else.
If Steam says all files are valid but the error remains, confirm that the error refers to the same Siege installation Steam just checked. Multiple installations can leave an older or incomplete copy on another drive.

Ubisoft Connect
- Close Siege.
- Open Ubisoft Connect.
- Select Games.
- Open the Siege game page.
- Select the game’s Properties menu.
- Choose the available Verify files, Verify game files, or Repair command.
- Allow Ubisoft Connect to download or replace any damaged files.
- Restart Ubisoft Connect and launch the game from that installation.
The wording can vary between Ubisoft Connect versions. Look for the repair or file-verification command in the game’s properties rather than searching Windows folders for a replacement DLL.
Epic Games installation
If Epic Games manages the installation, open the Epic Games launcher, select Library, use the three-dot menu beside Siege, and choose Manage followed by Verify, if that option is shown. Launch the game through the platform that installed it.
Steam, Ubisoft, and Epic installations may use different copies or launch arrangements. Do not copy defaultargs.dll from one platform’s folder into another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 2: Reinstall Siege from the same platform
Time needed: 30 minutes or longer
Use this step when verification cannot restore the file, repeatedly reports damaged files, or the game still shows the same error after a successful verification.
- Confirm which platform owns the installation.
- Uninstall Siege from that platform.
- Restart Windows.
- Clear the launcher’s download cache if the launcher provides that option.
- Reinstall Siege to the intended drive.
- Wait for the installation and all updates to finish.
- Launch it through the same store or launcher account.
On Steam, the download-cache command is under Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. Steam may require you to sign in again afterward.
Do not install a second copy over an old directory unless the launcher specifically supports that repair. An old folder, incomplete update, or mismatched account can leave the launcher starting a different copy than the one you repaired.

If reinstalling fails, check available disk space and the drive’s health. An interrupted download or failing storage can recreate the same missing-file problem.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a game file after an update or a false detection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry associated with Siege or
defaultargs.dll. - Read the detection details before taking action.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the missing filename. Restore it only when the detection is confidently identified as a false positive and you will immediately run the launcher’s official file verification.
After a carefully confirmed restore:
- Run file verification again.
- Start Siege.
- If Windows Security quarantines the file again, stop repeatedly allowing it.
- Run a full security scan and contact Ubisoft or your antivirus provider.
A downloaded DLL from an unknown source is not a safe substitute for a quarantined file. The official launcher is the correct source for rebuilding the game file.
Fix 4: Check for a launcher or account mismatch
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A Steam copy, Ubisoft Connect copy, and Epic-managed copy can have different installation files and launch requirements. Community reports indicate that platform-specific defaultargs.dll copies can differ, although Ubisoft has not publicly documented the file’s internal purpose.

Check the following:
- Identify the folder that contains the active Siege executable.
- Open the launcher that owns that folder.
- Verify the game through that launcher.
- Launch Siege from that same launcher.
- Sign in with the account that owns the game.
- Temporarily remove duplicate Siege shortcuts from the desktop and Start menu.
- Disable overlays and unofficial mods while testing.
The file should normally be in the Siege installation directory, beside the game executable. It should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Windows can run a 32-bit game on 64-bit Windows. Do not choose a DLL based only on whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. The launcher must supply the build intended for that installation.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This step is not the primary repair for defaultargs.dll. Use it when several unrelated applications report missing or corrupted system files, Windows behaves abnormally, or system repairs themselves fail.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify Siege again through its launcher.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. These commands repair Windows components; they will not normally recreate a private Siege file.
Manually hunting through Windows components, repeating SFC and DISM, and trying to determine which repair changed the system can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version. Reinstalling Rainbow Six Siege remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to the game.
Do not use Windows Features to add random DLL packages. Settings > Apps > Optional features and Turn Windows features on or off are for Windows components, not for restoring defaultargs.dll.
Fix 6: Update Windows and device drivers
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A Windows or driver problem is less likely when only Siege reports this filename, but updates can resolve broader launch failures.
Install Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test Siege again.
Check drivers in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for relevant chipset or storage devices if they show a warning icon.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove a working driver simply because defaultargs.dll is missing. Driver updates are most relevant when the game also crashes, displays graphics errors, or fails after a system change.

Finding the correct graphics and chipset driver versions manually can mean checking several hardware entries and vendor pages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is not a substitute for verifying or reinstalling Siege when the game file itself is missing.
Fix 7: Scan for malware or broader storage problems
Time needed: 20 minutes or longer
Do not assume that a missing game DLL proves malware. However, investigate further when files are repeatedly deleted, many programs report corruption, or Windows Security shows suspicious activity.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- Follow the results and recommended actions.
If game files disappear after successful verification, check whether the drive has errors, whether the installation drive is nearly full, and whether other files are being corrupted. Reinstalling onto a healthy drive may be necessary.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
Use System Restore only when the problem began after a driver, application, update, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore if the result is acceptable.
System Restore can remove recently installed programs and updates but does not normally affect personal files. Reinstall or verify Siege after the rollback.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading defaultargs.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites cannot prove that a file is genuine, untampered, compatible with your Siege build, or intended for your launcher. The file may also have missing dependencies, the wrong architecture, or a malicious replacement.
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Copying
defaultargs.dllinto System32 or SysWOW64 - Copying it from another PC
- Copying it from a different Steam, Ubisoft, or Epic installation
- Running registry cleaners
- Using
regsvr32 defaultargs.dll - Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as a guess
regsvr32 is intended for registerable DLL and COM components that expose registration entry points. An ordinary private game binary is not normally repaired by registering it, and the command may produce an entry-point error.
Visual C++ may matter when a separate error names a Microsoft runtime DLL, but defaultargs.dll is not established as a Visual C++ component. Repair the named dependency only when the error or the game’s official requirements identify it.

| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or corrupted Siege files | Verify files, then reinstall if necessary |
| Failed update or launcher cache | Clear the relevant cache and verify again |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection history, then verify from the launcher |
| Wrong platform or duplicate installation | Use the owning launcher and remove duplicate shortcuts |
| Damaged storage | Check free space and drive health, then reinstall |
| Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Malware or repeated deletion | Run a full security scan |

The file’s precise internal function, official version history, architecture, exports, signing information, and file-generation logic are not publicly established. Exact size and checksum records should not be used to select a replacement.
FAQ
Is defaultargs.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence shows that it ships with Windows. Treat it as a private Rainbow Six Siege installation file.
Where should defaultargs.dll be located?
Normally in the Siege game folder, beside the game executable. It does not belong in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is `defaultargs.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no reliable evidence identifying it as a Microsoft runtime component. Installing those packages will not normally restore this game-private file.
Which game uses defaultargs.dll?
Public file records associate it with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege and Ubisoft Montreal. The file’s precise internal purpose is not publicly documented.
What if verification says the files are valid?
Confirm the active installation path, check for duplicate copies, launch from the owning platform, inspect Protection history, and disable overlays or mods temporarily. If the error remains, reinstall through that same platform.
Should I run regsvr32 defaultargs.dll?
Normally no. Registration is not the standard repair for a private game binary and can create an unrelated entry-point error.
What information should I provide when asking for further help?
Record the full error text, the launcher in use, the installation path, whether defaultargs.dll exists, whether Windows Security quarantined it, and whether other DLL names are also reported as missing.
