Teams do not usually replace an elite defensive tackle by asking one reserve to do everything he does. They distribute interior snaps among several linemen, tailor substitutions to the down and opponent, and try to keep key players energetic for high-leverage situations. The aim is to manage roles and workload—not to reproduce the star one-for-one.
What a defensive-line rotation is—and is not
A defensive-line rotation is a plan for allocating playing time among multiple linemen. When a team needs to reduce an elite tackle’s workload, it can share interior snaps across the depth chart rather than rely on a single direct replacement.
That distinction matters because linemen do not necessarily have identical strengths or assignments. One may be better suited to a particular alignment or matchup; another may provide relief on selected downs. The defense is trying to keep its desired roles covered, not to make every substitute a replica of its best player.
A recent Bengals opener illustrates the shared-workload approach: eight defensive linemen each played at least 19 snaps, while Jonathan Allen played 32 and Dexter Lawrence 35. That is one game’s deployment, not evidence that a deep rotation is always superior. Bengals report

How coaches decide who plays
Coaches can think about workload as a fixed number of snaps or as a share of the defense’s total snaps. A fixed target is easy to picture, but game length varies. Robert Saleh, then the Jets’ head coach, put it this way in a 2022 team report: “It’s really not a 30-35 snap count, it’s more of a percentage.” He described roughly 70% as a goal in ordinary circumstances, while noting variables and discussing games of around 60–65 defensive snaps. Those were his coaching estimates, not an NFL-wide standard. Jets report
In practice, a rotation can account for several factors at once:
Rank #2
- Straight Handlebar Design:Equipped with a straight handlebar for a stable, balanced grip and more controlled push training.
- Adjustable Handle System:5 adjustable levels support various training positions and users.
- Flexible Resistance:Compatible with standard and Olympic plates for flexible resistance control.
- Heavy-Duty Steel Build:Reinforced steel frame supports up to 550 lbs for durability and stability.
- Full-Body Training:Targets legs, shoulders, core and back to improve strength and conditioning.
- Role: Which lineman can handle the alignment or assignment the defense needs?
- Down and situation: Is the priority to hold up against the run, rush the passer, or preserve a player for a later high-value snap?
- Opponent personnel: Does the offense’s grouping call for a different combination of defenders?
- Depth and game length: How many capable linemen are available, and how many plays is the defense likely to face?
These considerations shape coaching choices; the available examples do not establish one ideal snap target for every team.
Why freshness can matter on third down
A rotation can be designed to conserve energy for moments when a pass rush is especially valuable. Rams lineman Kobie Turner described the problem from his own experience in July 2025: “For me, my journey last year, I started off taking basically every snap and once it got to third downs, I didn’t have as much juice.” He said teammates took some early-down work so he and Braden Fiske could retain energy for pass-rush opportunities. Turner played 792 snaps, or 74.9% of the Rams’ defensive snaps, in 2024, according to the team’s report citing Next Gen Stats. That report also gave him a 15.2% third-down pressure rate for that season. Those figures describe his workload and a season-specific outcome; they do not show that a particular rotation caused the pressure rate or that fewer snaps would improve another player’s results.
Why the substitute may change by matchup
A rotation can be more than a star leaving and a backup taking the same spot. Rams reporting described substitutions based on offensive personnel and player strengths, with reserves supplying relief. It also noted that linemen could stay on the field for third downs when a drive continued. Head coach Sean McVay explained the trade-off: “Ideally, you want to keep them fresh, but to their credit, when you’re able to sustain some drives, [they will] stay on the field on third downs.” Rams report

In general football terms, a staff can first identify what the elite tackle is being asked to do in a given front, then decide which available lineman can cover that role. The coach can keep the star in for the situations that most depend on his skills and use other players in selected alignments or downs. The cited reporting supports substitutions by personnel grouping and strengths, but does not document a complete playbook or exact assignments for every team.

A deeper group gives coaches more ways to divide work. In the Bengals opener cited above, eight defensive linemen reached at least 19 snaps. That shows multiple players contributing in one game; it does not prove that the same number or distribution is right for another roster.

Cross-training can make that depth more flexible. In a 2017 account, then-49ers defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina described working players at more than one spot alongside a one-gap attacking system. He also called himself “a rotation guy,” describing a philosophy of rotating after four to five full-tilt plays. His approach illustrates one coach’s method, not a league rule. 49ers report
What the snap examples do—and do not—tell us
Individual seasons and games show how teams have managed workloads, but they cannot by themselves establish a universal limit or prove that rotation improves performance. Bengals reporting in 2026 said Allen played 811 snaps—76% of Minnesota’s defensive plays—in the 2025 season, and quoted him saying of that workload, “Looking at it from the big picture, it’s obvious it’s better not to play that many snaps.” The same report cited Geno Atkins’ 816 snaps in 2019 as a higher Bengals tackle mark and named B.J. Hill’s 2022 season in the comparison. Bengals report
The report also noted that Allen’s 2021 Pro Bowl season included nine sacks and 30 quarterback hits while he played about 40 fewer snaps than in the season with 811. That is a comparison between seasons, not proof that the lower workload caused those results.
Historical Rams figures offer another snapshot: in one 2017 game, Westbrooks played 31 of 78 defensive snaps and Smart played seven; their season averages at that point were 18.7 and 22.3 snaps per game, respectively. These are figures from that particular game and season, not a current rotation benchmark. Rams report

The cited accounts give coaching rationale and player experience, but do not establish a league-wide optimal snap limit or prove that rotating defensive linemen prevents injuries or raises pressure rates. A rotation is best understood as a personnel and workload decision whose success depends on whether the available players can execute the roles the defense needs.
