From downtown Chicago, take the CTA Red Line to Howard, transfer to the Purple Line for Central, then walk west or use CTA bus 201. On Metra, take the Union Pacific North Line to Central Street and walk east toward the stadium. Driving is possible, but do not assume you can park at the field: football-game parking is restricted and requires game-specific instructions.
Take the CTA: Red Line, Purple Line, or bus 201
From downtown Chicago
- Take the Red Line northbound to Howard.
- At Howard, transfer to the Purple Line and ride to Central.
- From the CTA Central station, walk west toward Ryan Field or take CTA route 201.
The CTA Purple Line station is a few blocks east of the stadium. Northwestern’s directions describe bus 201 as stopping about a block from the field; the venue guide says it stops in front of the stadium. Check the CTA’s current route and service information before leaving.
Connecting from Davis Street or Evanston
Route 201 runs from the Howard terminal along Ridge to Davis Street, then north on Sheridan Road to Evanston Hospital and Ryan Field. It can be useful if you are already in Evanston or transferring from another service. See Northwestern’s public transit information and check live route details before departure.
Take Metra’s Union Pacific North Line
Ride the Union Pacific North Line (UP-N) to Central Street. Northwestern says the line serves downtown Chicago and Kenosha. From the Metra station, walk east along Central Street toward Ryan Field; the venue guide estimates the walk to the gates at about five minutes. This is an approximate venue estimate, not an accessibility-adjusted travel time.

Metra Central Street and CTA Purple Line Central are different stations on opposite sides of the stadium. From Metra, head east toward the field; from CTA, head west. Confirm the current Metra UP-N schedule and any event service before traveling.

- From Chicago and the south: Follow Lake Shore Drive as it becomes Sheridan Road, continue north through Evanston, then turn west on Central Street. Alternatively, take I-90/94 and continue on I-94 West (Edens) toward Milwaukee; exit at Old Orchard Road and follow Gross Point Road to Central Street.
- From the north: Take I-94 East, exit at Skokie Boulevard, continue east on Lake Avenue to Green Bay Road, then head south to Central Street and turn east.
- From the west or O’Hare: Northwestern’s directions use I-294 and Dempster Street to reach I-94, followed by Old Orchard Road, Gross Point Road, and Central Street.
These are route descriptions, not live navigation or traffic estimates. Check current maps and road conditions on the day of travel. Northwestern Athletics lists the address and approaches on its Ryan Field Campus Gameday Information page.
Check parking and event-day access before driving
Do not treat an annual Ryan Field permit as permission to park at the stadium during a football game. Northwestern’s policy says there is no Ryan Field parking on football game days, even for annual permit holders; football parking at the field is reserved for season-ticket holders. Nearby street parking is restricted to residential permits, and surrounding-neighborhood street parking is prohibited on event days. Other campus lots may be available, but locations and access depend on the event.

Before setting out, check Northwestern’s Game Day Parking information and the specific event’s parking map or single-game parking details. The Ryan Field guide also lists campus and downtown shuttles beginning three hours before kickoff, with pickup and drop-off on Ashland Avenue at the stadium; confirm that shuttles are operating for your event.

Special schedules and fares are event-specific, not standing arrangements. For example, a CTA notice published October 1, 2026, for Northwestern versus Penn State on October 2 said ticket holders could ride Metra UP-N free to and from that game and described extra trains at Central Street. It also announced Purple Line Express service and a postgame free-ride window for that event. Those offers should not be assumed for another game.
That notice also said Pace routes 208, 213, and 250 and the Pulse Dempster Line connect to downtown Evanston, where riders could transfer at Davis Street to the Purple Line at Central or CTA 201. See the dated CTA announcement for its event-specific terms, and verify current operator information for your own travel date.
