Verdict: The Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition is still a competent 1080p gaming laptop when bought cheaply used or refurbished. The Ryzen 7 5800H/RTX 3050 Ti version is the one to target, preferably with 16GB of dual-channel RAM, a healthy battery, the original charger, and a verified display. Its weak screen, aging 4GB GPU, and lack of a new-product warranty make it a poor buy at prices approaching newer RTX 4050 or RTX 4060 laptops.
This is a 2021 model, not a current mainstream Dell product. In 2026, its value depends more on condition, warranty, and asking price than on its original launch specifications.

Performance: still a 1080p machine
The Ryzen 7 5800H remains a strong processor for an older gaming laptop. Its eight Zen 3 cores provide plenty of capacity for gaming, schoolwork, multitasking, and CPU-heavy applications. Under sustained workloads, it maintained high clock speeds, although a Lenovo Legion 5 with a comparable processor benefited from higher power limits.
The RTX 3050 Ti is suitable for 1080p gaming, but its 4GB of VRAM is increasingly restrictive in newer texture-heavy games. It is not a future-proof GPU. The RTX 3050 version is still reasonable for esports, older games, and well-optimized releases, but it should be considerably cheaper than the Ti model.
What to expect in games
- Competitive esports: High frame rates at 1080p, particularly with reduced settings.
- Older AAA games: High settings are generally practical.
- 2021-era AAA games: High settings are often possible, but not universally.
- New demanding AAA games: Expect medium settings, upscaling, and texture compromises.
- Ray tracing: Usually a poor fit unless image quality and frame rate are heavily compromised.
- 4K gaming: Not the laptop’s intended use.
Notebookcheck found that contemporary games generally ran smoothly at 1920×1080, although demanding titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 required compromises. The tested RTX 3050 Ti also performed slightly below the average for that GPU class in the review’s comparisons.

Do not apply those results equally to every listing. Performance depends on the CPU and GPU variant, single- versus dual-channel memory, drivers, game patches, thermals, Dell’s performance mode, and whether the laptop is plugged in. A machine with only 8GB of RAM may also suffer worse frame-time consistency and more stutter than the 16GB test unit.
The display is the biggest weakness
The tested screen has the right basic gaming specification: 1920×1080 resolution, a matte finish, and a 120Hz refresh rate. That is a sensible match for the RTX 3050 Ti. However, Notebookcheck criticized its low brightness, weak contrast, limited color coverage, and PWM flicker.
It is acceptable for ordinary gaming, but it is not a strong choice for color-sensitive creative work or bright rooms. The 120Hz label alone does not tell you whether a used G15 has the same panel characteristics. Dell sold the family with different display options depending on market and configuration.
Before buying, ask for the exact display specification or service tag and request photographs at low and high brightness. Check for dead pixels, uneven backlighting, and visible flicker. A newer laptop with a brighter 144Hz or 165Hz panel may look substantially better even if its gaming performance is similar.

The G15 is a conventional, sturdy-feeling gaming laptop rather than a portable ultrabook. At about 2.43kg before the large adapter, it is manageable for occasional travel but heavy for daily commuting. Its size is more comfortable on a desk than on a small tray table.
The illuminated keyboard is suitable for gaming and general typing. The HD webcam is basic rather than a selling point, and the speakers should be treated as functional instead of premium. For school or work, the machine offers useful CPU performance and connectivity, but the dim display and weight reduce its appeal as an all-day portable computer.
Ports and connectivity
The tested configuration included three USB-A ports, USB-C with DisplayPort support, HDMI, Ethernet with a 2.5GbE controller, a combined headset jack, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.2. The rear-oriented connections are convenient for a permanent desk setup.
There is no Thunderbolt and no memory-card reader in the tested configuration. USB-C DisplayPort is useful for an external monitor, but it does not automatically provide Thunderbolt docking, external-GPU support, or USB-C charging suitable for full gaming performance. Confirm the port layout and display outputs if you plan to use a dock or monitor.

Thermals and noise
Notebookcheck measured approximately 25–30dB(A) at idle, 44dB(A) during a Witcher 3 test, and 48dB(A) in a stress test. That makes the machine relatively controlled for its class in everyday use, although gaming is clearly audible. It became warm under load without showing excessive temperatures in the review unit.

A second-hand laptop may perform worse. Dust-clogged heatsinks, aged thermal paste, worn fan bearings, obstructed vents, and a non-original charger can all change the result. A used G15 should be tested while plugged in for several minutes under CPU and GPU load. Persistent throttling, fan grinding, random shutdowns, or severe heat are reasons to walk away or negotiate heavily.
Battery life in the original test—and in 2026
The 56Wh test unit lasted approximately 7 hours 58 minutes in Notebookcheck’s Wi-Fi test and 8 hours 49 minutes in its video test. Under maximum load, it lasted only about 1 hour 31 minutes. Gaming on battery is not the intended use: performance drops and runtime becomes very short.
Those original results are not a prediction for a five-year-old used laptop. Ask the seller for a Windows battery report or equivalent health information, confirm that the charger is included, and inspect the chassis for swelling. A swollen lithium-ion battery is a safety problem, not merely an upgrade cost. Dell’s service manual includes battery-removal procedures and safety guidance.
RAM and SSD upgrades
The G15 5515 is more upgrade-friendly than many thin gaming laptops. Dell’s documentation identifies removable memory modules and two NVMe SSD locations. A practical upgrade path is to replace an 8GB configuration with 16GB, or use 32GB for heavier multitasking. A larger primary SSD can also make a major difference because 256GB and 512GB fill quickly with modern games.
There is an important catch: Notebookcheck found that the test unit lacked the frame needed to install a second drive. A listing may honestly advertise support for two SSDs while still being missing the bracket, screw, or other mounting hardware. Ask for a photograph of the empty slot and its mounting hardware before buying a second drive. Dell’s official support documentation provides the relevant setup and service manuals.
Buying a used G15 5515 in 2026
The model is now mainly a used, refurbished, or old-stock purchase. Its 2021 launch prices are historical and should not guide a 2026 transaction. Do not use a fixed dollar cutoff without checking local listings; instead compare the complete package with newer RTX 4050 and RTX 4060 laptops.
Look for
- Ryzen 7 5800H and RTX 3050 Ti, rather than Ryzen 5 and RTX 3050, when the price difference is reasonable.
- At least 16GB of dual-channel RAM, or a low upgrade cost.
- A healthy, non-swollen battery.
- The original Dell high-wattage charger.
- A verified panel, with no dead pixels or distracting flicker.
- An SSD with sufficient health and capacity.
- A meaningful return window or refurbished warranty.
Inspect before paying
- Confirm the exact CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and display in Windows, BIOS, or Dell Support using the service tag.
- Check whether the RAM uses two modules where possible.
- Request battery-health information and inspect for swelling.
- Run a short plugged-in CPU/GPU load test and watch for throttling or shutdowns.
- Test every USB port, USB-C DisplayPort, HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, webcam, speakers, and headset jack.
- Check the screen at different brightness levels for flicker, dead pixels, and uneven lighting.
- Verify the charger’s wattage, connector, and condition.
- Inspect the bottom cover, hinges, vents, and screws.
- Confirm that the second SSD bracket and screw are included if expansion is planned.
Reject or heavily discount a unit with an unknown configuration, missing charger, swollen battery, damaged display, persistent thermal problems, or no return protection.
Alternatives
A newer laptop is preferable when the price gap is modest. Current Lenovo Legion, ASUS TUF, and HP Victus models offer newer GPUs, newer video features, fresh batteries, and remaining warranty life, although exact value depends on the selected configuration.
The Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 AMD is a stronger long-term replacement, but it is substantially more expensive. ASUS TUF Gaming provides a broad range of newer budget and midrange configurations. The HP Victus 15 is another natural new-product comparison, but its display and GPU must be checked on the exact model rather than judged from the family name.
If the G15’s price approaches a newer RTX 4050 or RTX 4060 laptop, choose the newer machine. If the G15 is substantially cheaper and in good condition, its 1080p performance can still make sense.

Final verdict
The Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition remains a good-value 1080p gaming laptop only when the price reflects its age. Prefer the Ryzen 7 5800H/RTX 3050 Ti configuration with 16GB dual-channel RAM, a healthy battery, a verified screen, and the original charger. It can handle esports, older AAA games, and many 1080p releases with sensible settings, but its 4GB GPU and weak display limit its long-term appeal.
