Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

In February 2023, 8BitDo reportedly supplied beta firmware for its USB Wireless Adapter 2, allowing a Stadia Controller that had already been converted to Bluetooth mode to work with Nintendo Switch. This was not native Switch support, and early testers reported missing rumble.
In 2026, the biggest obstacle is the controller itself: Google’s official Bluetooth-conversion tool was available only through December 31, 2024. If your Stadia Controller was never converted, you should not assume it can still be activated for this setup.

What 8BitDo actually added
The original report, published February 7, 2023, described a compatibility effort involving three pieces of hardware:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- A Google Stadia Controller
- A Nintendo Switch
- An 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2
The adapter acted as a wireless compatibility layer. The Switch communicated with the 8BitDo adapter, while the adapter communicated with the Stadia Controller. The Switch did not gain direct, native Stadia Controller pairing.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The evidence was a beta firmware download reportedly shared by 8BitDo with a Stadia user, followed by community testing. That supports saying the combination was reported to work—not that 8BitDo released a fully documented, universally supported Stadia feature. Chrome Unboxed’s original report also noted that rumble was not working for early testers.
The 2026 requirement most articles miss
Before a Stadia Controller could be used this way, its firmware had to be converted from Stadia’s proprietary Wi-Fi mode to Bluetooth Low Energy. Google’s conversion process required a computer, a USB data cable, and Chrome 108 or later.
Google’s documented process was:
- Turn on the controller by holding the Stadia button.
- Connect it to a computer with a USB cable.
- Open Google’s Stadia Controller update page in Chrome 108 or later.
- Follow the on-screen conversion instructions.
That conversion permanently disabled the controller’s Stadia Wi-Fi functionality. More importantly for anyone attempting this now, Google’s deadline for enabling Bluetooth was December 31, 2024. Stadia’s servers shut down on January 18, 2023. The official Google tool should therefore not be presented as a guaranteed 2026 solution. See Google’s Stadia Controller support page for the documented requirements and limitations.

What you would have needed
- A Stadia Controller already converted to Bluetooth mode
- An 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2
- A Nintendo Switch and compatible USB connection, typically through the dock
- A USB data cable for firmware work
- The appropriate 8BitDo adapter firmware
During the 2023 beta period, the reported setup involved updating the adapter with beta firmware, putting it in Switch mode, entering pairing mode on the Stadia Controller, and testing the connection in a Switch game. The original report did not provide a complete official button-by-button procedure or establish that every Switch model, system version, or game behaved identically.
Pairing the Stadia Controller
Google’s general Bluetooth instructions say to hold the Stadia button until the controller turns off, then hold it again until the status light pulses orange. If it does not enter pairing mode, hold Stadia + Y for two seconds. A successful Bluetooth connection produces a solid white light.
For this Switch setup, the 8BitDo adapter must also be in pairing mode and running firmware capable of recognizing the controller. These instructions do not mean the Switch itself can pair directly with a Stadia Controller.

Features and limitations
| Feature | Expected status |
|---|---|
| Standard sticks and buttons | Reported working in the beta setup |
| Wireless connection | Requires Bluetooth-converted controller plus adapter |
| Rumble | Reported missing during early beta testing |
| Google Assistant button | No Stadia-era function |
| Capture button | No Stadia-era function |
| Headset audio through the controller | Does not work in Bluetooth mode |
| Motion controls, NFC and other Switch-specific features | Do not assume they work |
| Direct Switch pairing | Not established; the reported setup used the adapter |
Google warns that Bluetooth compatibility varies because the controller was not extensively tested across every platform. Button prompts may also feel wrong: the physical Stadia labels do not necessarily match Nintendo’s on-screen A/B and X/Y conventions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes the current 8BitDo adapter officially support Stadia?
The current USB Wireless Adapter 2 product page lists support for several 8BitDo controllers, Xbox Bluetooth controllers, PlayStation controllers, Switch Pro Controllers, Joy-Con, Wii Remotes and Wii U Pro Controllers. It does not name the Stadia Controller.
That omission matters. The adapter remains an official product with upgradeable firmware, Bluetooth 4.0 and Bluetooth LE support, but the Stadia feature should be treated as a historical beta capability rather than a currently documented 8BitDo guarantee.

If you need to update the adapter, use only 8BitDo’s official Firmware Updater. The current updater page does not establish that a Stadia-specific beta package remains publicly available, so avoid firmware files from unverified mirrors.

The adapter cannot see the controller
Confirm that the controller was converted to Bluetooth mode, reset its pairing state, update the adapter through official 8BitDo channels, and try pairing again.
The controller will not enter pairing mode
Hold the Stadia button until the controller turns off, then hold it again until the light pulses orange. If necessary, hold Stadia + Y for two seconds.
Best Value
- Compatible with Switch and Switch 2 via Bluetooth. Switch 2 compatibility requires the controller to be updated to the latest firmware.
- Hall Effect joysticks with wear-resistant metal rings.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad - Recalibrated for a clicky yet smooth feel.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software.
- Wake-on-shake (not supported on Switch 2). 6-axis motion control. Rumble Vibration. Turbo function.
The controller appears but will not connect
Remove any saved Bluetooth entry for the controller, restart pairing on both devices, and try again. A successful Google-documented connection produces a solid white status light, although adapter behavior can vary.
Google’s conversion page does not detect it
Use a known data-capable USB cable rather than a charge-only cable. Google also documented unplugging the controller and holding the Stadia button for 10 seconds before retrying after a failed conversion.
There is no rumble
Do not immediately assume the controller is defective. Missing rumble was reported during the original beta testing and can be a compatibility limitation.

Should you use this setup?
It makes the most sense if you already own a Stadia Controller that was converted to Bluetooth before the deadline, prefer its shape, and only need ordinary wireless sticks and buttons.
It is a poor choice if you need guaranteed vibration, motion controls, NFC, headset audio, perfect Nintendo button mapping, or plug-and-play support. Buying an unverified used Stadia Controller is especially risky: sellers may confuse a controller that was converted, one that only works over USB, and one still running its original Stadia firmware.
If you do not already own a converted controller, a current Switch-compatible controller is generally the more predictable purchase. The 8BitDo adapter may still be useful for existing owners, but current documentation does not guarantee Stadia compatibility and the original beta feature is no longer a straightforward new setup.
