Spoilers: This guide covers Chapter 3’s optional Roaring Knight win attempt, the hidden Shadow Mantle route, and its rewards. The normal Knight encounter is a scripted loss that advances the story; to try for an optional win, complete the hidden route, equip the Shadow Mantle, then reload a save made after Tenna and before the Knight.
What counts as defeating the Chapter 3 secret boss?
Walkthroughs commonly call the Roaring Knight the Chapter 3 secret boss. The regular story encounter is not a conventional fight you are expected to win: losing moves the story forward. A separate optional win event is available if you prepare with the Shadow Mantle. Guides describe a limited win condition and story continuation, not killing the Knight.
Unlock the Shadow Mantle
Pocket Tactics’ route requires S-ranks on both boards, two minigame keys, and a hidden shelter fight. Make a save after defeating Tenna and before entering the Knight encounter so you can return to it for the optional attempt.
- Earn an S-rank on the first board. Enter the S-rank area in the Green Room and speak with the NPC to access the backstage minigame.
- Find the Ice Key. In the minigame, level the sword enough to cut cacti and trees. Backtrack through the tree area to locate the key.
- Earn an S-rank on the second board. Repeat the backstage process and play its minigame. Level up, take the raft to the white land, and enter the Delta Rune temple.
- Get the Shelter Key. Continue to the locked room in the temple and use the Ice Key to obtain the Shelter Key.
- Win the hidden shelter fight. Return by the Green Room route, use the Shelter Key to enter the shelter, and win the hidden encounter to claim the Shadow Mantle. Leave room in your armor inventory before claiming it.
- Equip the Mantle and reload your save. Equip it before the Knight fight; Pocket Tactics recommends Susie. Reload the save you made after Tenna and challenge the Knight again.
How to approach the Knight fight
Gameranx recommends opening with HoldBreath, then defending to build TP. When you have enough TP, use Susie’s Rude Buster; use Ralsei to heal and have healing items ready. That is one walkthrough’s suggested approach, not a guarantee of the best tactic for every party setup or game version. The guide advises against spending turns on other ACT actions.

Expect to dodge attacks as well as manage turns. Patch 1.03 reportedly reduced the sword hitboxes in the Knight’s “Sword Tunnel” attack, making it easier to dodge; see the version context below.
Win condition and rewards: what the guides say
The walkthroughs do not describe the fight’s ending identically, so do not treat a precise threshold or turn count as universal. Pocket Tactics reports that dealing damage equal to 25% of the Knight’s maximum HP ends the win attempt, chips the sword, and awards a Shadow Crystal and Black Shard. Gameranx instead describes lowering the Knight to 80% health and surviving a concluding attack sequence. Both frame this as an optional win, not a kill.
Pocket Tactics describes the Black Shard as an equipable Kris weapon. Gameranx also identifies the Shadow Crystal and Black Shard among the rewards. If an item does not appear, check the game version and the fight’s outcome rather than assuming the encounter has a universal reward threshold.

The official DELTARUNE Patch 1.02 announcement, dated July 7, 2025, listed Chapter 3 version 0.0.091 and a fix for an issue that could prevent receiving a Shadow Crystal from a certain boss. The announcement says chapter versions can be checked at the bottom right of the file-select screen; that listed version is a dated reference, not a claim about the current 2026 version.

A July 2025 GamesRadar+ report quoted the Patch 1.03 note: “Swords used in a certain boss’s ‘Sword Tunnel’ attack now have a reduced hit box relative to the graphic, making the attack easier to dodge.” If that attack feels different from older videos or advice, the patch is relevant context.
