Deltarune Chapters 3 & 4 Reviews: What Critics Praised—and What’s Still Unfinished

Critics praised Chapters 3 and 4 for character writing, humor, combat variety and music, while noting that Deltarune’s story remained unfinished.

Critics praised Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 for their character writing, oddball humor, inventive encounters and music. The scores available from the 2025 launch period are individual outlet reviews—not a single cross-platform verdict—and the biggest caveat was that the story did not end with Chapter 4. That context has since changed: the official FAQ says the game now includes Chapter 5, with Chapter 6 in development.

What critics thought of Chapters 3 and 4

The launch-period reviews in this sample were positive, but they cover different platforms and chapters. Metacritic lists two PC reviews of Chapter 4 and two Nintendo Switch 2 reviews of Chapter 3. Each score belongs to its outlet and date; the small, platform-filtered sample is not a reliable overall average or a universal consensus.

Platform and chapter listing Outlet Score and date What the review emphasized
PC, Chapter 4 Destructoid 100, June 17, 2025 Story features come together while humor and serious moments coexist; twists keep the player curious.
PC, Chapter 4 The Games Machine 90, June 20, 2025 A celebration of indie games and Toby Fox’s reinvention of the 2D RPG.
Nintendo Switch 2, Chapter 3 Pocket Tactics 80, June 18, 2025 Bosses, minigames and dialogue stand out; pursuing every ending or secret can frustrate.
Nintendo Switch 2, Chapter 3 Checkpoint Gaming 75, June 10, 2025 Susie’s vulnerable character arc, the mystery around Kris and the story’s emotional growth.

These are critic scores reproduced in Metacritic’s outlet listings, not independent measurements. The broader Metacritic page covers the paid game as a whole rather than isolating Chapters 3 and 4, so its praise for imagination, mechanics, humor, characters and music—and its notes about flaws or presentation—should not be mistaken for a clean scorecard for these two chapters alone.

Why the new chapters stood out

Character and story

Reviewers singled out the emotional development beneath Deltarune’s jokes and surprises. Checkpoint Gaming focused on Susie’s vulnerability and the expanding mystery around Kris; Destructoid’s summary described chapters that tie story elements together without losing the contrast between comic and serious moments. The chapters give the larger narrative meaningful movement, but they do not resolve it.

RPG conventions turned sideways

In a June 6, 2025 PC Gamer feature, contributor Ana Diaz described the new chapters as a deliberate challenge to familiar RPG logic, writing, “But if there is anything that is clear from the recent release of Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of Deltarune this week, it’s that this game wants to poke fun at—and defy—every rule of RPG logic.” The humor is not separate from the drama: Diaz also wrote that the experience “centers the emotions of its characters, even in the toughest of fights.”

Combat, bosses and minigames

Deltarune’s battles mix turn-based actions with emotional effects and sequences that ask players to dodge bullet patterns. That combination gives encounters a different rhythm from a conventional menu-driven RPG. Boss fights and minigames were recurring strengths in the cited reviews, although players already familiar with Undertale-style tricks may find some returning ideas repetitive, as Diaz noted.

Music and presentation

Music was part of the positive case in the broader 2025 review coverage, alongside the game’s imagination and character work. Reception was not uniformly glowing on every point: some reviewers on Metacritic’s broader paid-game listing found aspects of presentation underwhelming. Those observations concern the larger game listing, not a single isolated assessment of Chapters 3 and 4.

Is the unfinished story a reason to wait?

For players who prefer a complete narrative before starting, incompleteness is a real consideration. At the end of Chapter 4, the larger story remained open, and the official FAQ checked October 8, 2026 says Chapter 6 is in development. The game now includes content through Chapter 5, so launch reviews describing Chapter 4 as the endpoint are historical snapshots, not the current chapter count.

Players comfortable with an ongoing story can weigh that against the appeal critics identified: character-focused writing, unexpected comedy, varied fights and minigames, and a memorable soundtrack. Completionists should also note Pocket Tactics’ warning that chasing every ending or secret can be frustrating.

Release, platforms and physical editions

Chapters 3 and 4 arrived on June 5, 2025 as part of the paid Chapters 1–4 release. Toby Fox’s announcement set the North American release-era price at $24.99 and said future chapters would be added as free updates; that figure is not a current price quote. Nintendo’s announcement likewise described Chapters 1–4 as available with more chapters planned as free updates.

As of the official FAQ checked October 8, 2026, the full game is available on PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. A physical game edition is not available yet; the FAQ answers the question of whether one will exist with “Someday, probably, but not yet.” A separate physical item does exist: Fangamer announced that the Chapters 3 and 4 soundtrack vinyl had arrived on May 27, 2026. The vinyl is a soundtrack collectible, not a physical edition of the game.

How to read the review verdict

  • For story and character: the cited reviews point to emotional character work and a growing mystery, but Chapter 4 did not conclude the narrative.
  • For gameplay variety: expect bullet-dodging battles, unconventional turn-based choices, bosses and minigames rather than a standard RPG routine.
  • For score comparisons: treat each number as one outlet’s dated review on a particular platform; the examples do not establish a combined score for Chapters 3 and 4.
  • For soundtrack collectors: the Chapters 3 and 4 vinyl is a separate physical release, while the official FAQ points to digital soundtrack options through Steam, Bandcamp and iTunes.
