Deltarune: How to S-Rank Chapter 3’s Boards and Mini-Games

Chapter 3 S-ranks depend on board exploration, battles, and round-ending mini-games. Here’s how to approach the desert and island boards, plus what the S-Rank rooms unlock.

To earn S-ranks in DELTARUNE Chapter 3, build a strong total across board exploration, battles, and each round’s closing mini-game. There is no published official formula that makes one battle grade an automatic S-rank: collect points and keys, avoid damage and preserve TP in fights, then do well in the cooking or rhythm challenge. Susiezilla is optional, not a required S-rank challenge.

How do Chapter 3 S-ranks work?

Tenna’s boards award a rank based on more than the battles. A Destructoid rank guide describes three contributing areas: battle performance, points earned outside combat, and the score in the round-ending mini-game. That means an excellent battle grade alone does not guarantee an S-rank, and a weaker result in one area may be offset by stronger performance elsewhere. The guide does not provide an official, complete scoring formula for every possible combination.

  • Exploration: Search the board for points, keys, and optional point-earning activities.
  • Battles: Avoid taking damage, retain TP where practical, and finish efficiently. The walkthroughs recommend aiming for at least B-rank in the relevant fights, but that is a target, not a guaranteed S-rank formula.
  • Round-ending mini-game: Complete the cooking challenge after Round 1 and the rhythm game after Round 2; their scores contribute to the round result.

Round 1: Explore the desert board and finish the cooking game

Round 1 pairs the desert board with a chef mini-game. Explore thoroughly before moving on: the Gameranx Round 1 walkthrough maps four keys and notes that the fourth key is a useful bonus to the score.

  1. Search the desert board for points and keys. Follow the board’s objectives, and take time to look for the optional fourth key rather than rushing through.
  2. Play the battles carefully. The walkthrough recommends at least B-rank in each of the three battles. Avoid damage and manage TP, but treat the battle grades as one part of the eventual score.
  3. Complete the chef mini-game. Its result also feeds into the round’s rank, so do not neglect it after finishing the board objectives.
  4. Check the result and decide whether to recover it. If the round ends below S, the point-based recovery option described below may be available.

The walkthrough lists the Pink Ribbon as the S-rank reward for this round.

Round 2: Find Grand Photos and play the rhythm game

Round 2 takes place on an island board and includes Grand Photos, battles, and a closing rhythm challenge. Three photos are needed to progress; finding all four gives you the strongest photo-related score opportunity, according to the Gameranx Round 2 walkthrough.

  1. Find the camera and photograph at least three targets. Take the fourth photo as well if you are aiming to maximize your board score.
  2. Collect points while exploring. The walkthrough also points to an optional lawnmowing mini-game route as a way to earn points.
  3. Do well in the battles. Aim for B-rank or better where possible, while limiting damage and making effective use of TP. The walkthrough says strong exploration and rhythm-game results can help support the round’s S-rank; it does not say every battle must receive a specific grade.
  4. Play the rhythm game at the end of the round. A perfect performance is not required according to the walkthrough, but the mini-game score remains one of the rank inputs.

The walkthrough lists the White Ribbon as the S-rank reward for Round 2.

What to do in each S-Rank room

After a board, visit its S-Rank room if it is available. The GameGuides secret guide describes the route as the S-labelled door in the Green Room, where you play the original mini-game for a key or item. It lists these rewards:

After S-Rank room reward
Round 1 Ice Key
Round 2 Shelter Key
Round 3 Shadow Mantle

These room rewards are separate from the Pink Ribbon and White Ribbon board rewards. The creator’s retrospective confirms the final Chapter 3 structure includes three S-Rank rooms, after Boards 1, 2, and 4 respectively; it also says Board 3 was cut. See Toby Fox’s DELTARUNE site for the official game information and retrospective materials.

Can you recover a lower board rank?

Yes, according to the Destructoid guide: after a round ends at A-rank or lower, the Point Merchant south of the Green Room reportedly offers an S-rank for 1,500 points. Treat this as a recovery option rather than a default strategy; points spent there may be more valuable to you elsewhere, and the cost and mechanic are guide-reported rather than an official scoring rule.

Do you need to S-rank Susiezilla?

No. Toby Fox’s Chapter 3 and 4 retrospective says Susiezilla was made optional in the final version. Fox’s outline of Chapter 3’s final structure includes the cooking game, rhythm game, and three S-Rank rooms; Susiezilla is not part of the core board progression described there. You can skip it without treating it as a missing required S-rank.

Spoiler: why the Round 3 S-Rank room matters

Spoiler for secret content: the GameGuides secret guide says the Shadow Mantle is needed to survive the secret boss’s one-hit attack. If you intend to pursue that encounter, the Round 3 S-Rank room’s original mini-game is tied to an important defensive reward.

If a step does not match your game

Check that DELTARUNE is updated before relying on an older walkthrough. The official Steam announcements list later versioned patches, but the cited sources do not establish that a patch changed the S-rank scoring formula. The official help page lists PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, and says there is no physical version yet; platform and release details can change.
