Its fights are the game’s most distinctive idea, but launch reviews also point to repetitive early encounters and a story that struggles to make its large cast matter. The result is an intriguing, uneven RPG rather than a straightforward Persona substitute.
What is Demonschool?
Made by Necrosoft Games and published by Ysbryd Games, Demonschool launched on November 19, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and PC (Windows, macOS and Linux), according to the official factsheet. You play as Faye, whose university life on a mysterious island is entangled with battles against monstrous creatures.

The developer describes a mix of tactical combat, a deep story, side quests, friendships and an upgradeable clubhouse. That school-and-social-life framework makes the Persona comparison understandable, but Demonschool is not a Persona game. Its defining battle idea is closer to a movement puzzle than to conventional turn-based party combat.
How close is it to Persona?
The resemblance is in the broad ingredients: young characters, school life, relationships and supernatural RPG action. Nintendo Life reports that the game draws inspiration from the first two Persona titles. PC Gamer, meanwhile, described it as “a little Buffy, a little Shin Megami Tensei.” Those comparisons help place its mood and influences, but they do not describe how its battles play.

In Demonschool, the tactical movement system is the major distinction. The appeal is not simply spending time with a party between fights; it is planning how characters move and how their actions combine once a battle begins. Players looking for a familiar Persona-style structure should expect a different combat rhythm.
Combat is the game’s biggest gamble
PC Gamer describes combat as an isometric, grid-based domain where positioning matters. Necrosoft’s own description frames motion as action, with combos and status effects central to fights. Instead of treating movement as a preliminary step before an attack, the design makes movement part of the tactical decision: where a character goes helps determine what the party can do.

That gives encounters a clear identity and creates room for planning combinations rather than simply selecting an attack from a menu. But the concept needs enough variety and a sufficiently broad toolkit to stay engaging. Nintendo Life found early fights repetitive, especially while the playable roster is small. That is one outlet’s launch-era assessment, not a guarantee that every player will tire of the encounters at the same point.
Style and atmosphere are clear strengths
Necrosoft cites vintage Italian horror as a visual influence. PC Gamer praised the presentation, including its 2D sprites, lighting and 3D backgrounds. That combination helps the game establish an unsettling identity without relying on realism: expressive characters move through environments that give the island a darker, more cinematic feel.

The horror framing also gives the everyday university setting a useful contrast with the monstrous threats. The visual direction is among the most consistently praised parts of the game in the cited reviews, and it helps make Demonschool feel distinct from the games it invites players to compare it with.
Where the story and pacing lose ground
The school-life premise offers space for character relationships and side activities, but a large cast can make that space harder to use well. PC Gamer argued that the cast could have been culled and the story strengthened, suggesting that the game’s character development does not always benefit from the number of people it introduces.

Nintendo Life’s concern about repetitive early battles points to a separate pacing issue: the tactical system may take time to show its range, while the first encounters can feel similar. Together, these criticisms qualify the game’s strongest promise. A distinctive combat idea and a stylish world do not automatically guarantee consistently sharp storytelling or a varied opening stretch.

Demonschool is most compelling if you want a supernatural RPG whose combat asks you to think about movement and positioning, and if its stylized horror atmosphere appeals to you. It is less of an obvious choice if what you want is conventional turn-based party combat or a tightly focused story with a smaller cast.

PC Gamer’s launch review was enthusiastic about the tactical combat, dialogue and presentation while criticizing the cast and story. Nintendo Life also recognized the style and combat concept but reported repetitive early fights. GeekChamp’s “remedial classes” headline takes a more critical view of the mechanics, story and technical performance; that is its review’s thesis, not a consensus established by the other cited assessments.
