Choose Nintendo Switch 2 for Nintendo games and straightforward TV or handheld play; Steam Deck OLED for a Steam-centered portable PC with an OLED screen; and ROG Xbox Ally X for Windows flexibility and Xbox integration. The best fit depends first on the games you own and where you buy them—not just the processor or display. Check a specific game’s compatibility before buying, and distinguish the ROG Xbox Ally X from the separate ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026), whose specifications and price are not interchangeable.

Which handheld fits your games and play style?

Choose If your priority is What to keep in mind
Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo first-party games, a conventional console experience, detachable Joy-Con controllers, and handheld or TV play. It plays compatible original Nintendo Switch physical and digital games, but Nintendo warns that some titles may not work or may not be fully compatible. Nintendo’s backward-compatibility announcement gives the qualification.
Steam Deck OLED A Steam-centered PC library, a Steam-focused interface, and a portable PC with an HDR OLED screen. PC library access does not guarantee every game works or performs equally well. Check the particular game’s compatibility and requirements. Valve’s Steam Deck OLED page describes the device and its specifications.
ROG Xbox Ally X Windows flexibility, Xbox integration, and a more PC-like handheld. Windows can involve more PC-style setup. Confirm the exact model: Xbox lists the ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, and ROG Xbox Ally X20 separately. The X20 (2026) has distinct specifications. See Xbox’s handheld comparison.

Before choosing, ask yourself: Which games do I already own? Which store or platform will I use? Do I want to play on a TV? How much setup am I comfortable with? What is the actual price of the exact model in my region?

How do the screens compare?

Device Display details established by the manufacturer
Nintendo Switch 2 LCD handheld screen. See Nintendo’s technical specifications.
Steam Deck OLED 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280 × 800 resolution, with refresh rates up to 90 Hz, according to Valve’s specifications.
ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) 7.4-inch FHD OLED, 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz, HDR and VRR, according to Xbox’s model comparison. These display details apply to the X20 (2026), not automatically to every ROG Xbox Ally X.

Display numbers describe different things: resolution, refresh rate and panel type do not by themselves establish which device looks or performs better in every game. In particular, do not assign the X20’s OLED specifications to an earlier Ally X just because the names are similar.

What battery life should you expect?

Device Manufacturer information How to interpret it
Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game and use. The internal battery is 5220 mAh and is not user-replaceable; Nintendo says service replacement is available for a fee. See Nintendo’s technical specifications. This is Nintendo’s estimate, not a result from a shared test against the other devices.
Steam Deck OLED Valve lists a 50 Wh battery and “3-12 hrs of gameplay (content dependent).” See Valve’s specifications. Valve’s range depends on the content; it is not directly comparable with Nintendo’s estimate as a controlled head-to-head result.
ROG Xbox Ally family Xbox lists battery capacities of 60 Wh or 80 Wh across the family. See Xbox’s comparison. Capacity alone does not establish runtime. No comparable runtime estimate is stated here.

There is no common battery test in these specifications, so the figures do not establish which handheld lasts longest in the same game and conditions.

Nintendo Switch 2 System

  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

How do libraries and compatibility differ?

Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo games plus qualified Switch support

Switch 2 accepts Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch game cards. Nintendo says compatible original Switch digital and physical games can be played, but some older titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check the exact game rather than assuming every item in a Switch library transfers without issue. Nintendo announced a June 5, 2025 release date for Switch 2 in its release announcement.

Steam Deck OLED: a portable PC built around Steam

Steam Deck is a PC with a Steam-focused experience. That gives it access to PC games in a portable format, but compatibility and performance vary by title. Verify the specific game, including any anti-cheat or other requirements that could affect play, before treating a PC library as a guaranteed handheld library.

ROG Xbox Ally X: Windows and Xbox integration

The ROG Xbox Ally X combines Windows 11 with Xbox-focused interface features. Its more PC-like flexibility may suit someone who wants Windows, but can also mean more setup than a conventional console. Xbox’s compatibility information and the specific game’s store or requirements should guide expectations; a processor specification alone does not prove how a game will run.

What storage and accessories matter?

Switch 2 storage expansion

Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards only for game-storage expansion, up to 2 TB. Nintendo says other microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch; they do not expand Switch 2 game storage. If you need more room for games, look specifically for a microSD Express card for Switch 2, not a generic Switch-compatible microSD card.

What do they cost?

These are dated US reference points, not synchronized live quotes or guaranteed current street prices. TechRadar’s published comparison lists Switch 2 at $449.99 and Steam Deck OLED at $549 for 512 GB or $649 for 1 TB. ASUS’s US store showed the distinct ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) at $1,299.99 when accessed on October 5, 2026. That X20 listing is not a price for every ROG Xbox Ally X. Check the current regional price and exact SKU before comparing totals. Sources: TechRadar’s US price comparison, ASUS’s US ROG Xbox Ally X20 store page, and Xbox’s model comparison.

Make the decision in this order

  1. Start with your games. List the titles you most want to play and identify their platform, store and any compatibility or anti-cheat requirements.
  2. Decide how you want to play. Prioritize Switch 2 if detachable controllers and Nintendo’s handheld-and-TV console approach suit you; consider Steam Deck OLED for a Steam-focused PC handheld; consider the ROG Xbox Ally X for Windows flexibility and Xbox integration.
  3. Check the exact model and practical constraints. For the ROG family, distinguish the Ally X from the X20 (2026). For Switch 2, account for its microSD Express-only game-storage expansion. For PC handhelds, confirm the game and setup you need.
  4. Compare real local prices. Use current regional listings for the exact device and storage configuration rather than treating dated US reference prices as live offers.
