Denshattack! Explained: Tony Hawk-Style Tricks on a Train

Undercoders’ Denshattack! brings skate-game trick combos to a train, using fixed railway routes, timing, and momentum as its take on the skatepark.

Denshattack! is a single-player 3D platformer that turns railway routes into a trick course: ride a customizable train, hit jumps and grinds, chain moves for score, and manage momentum instead of freely roaming a skatepark. Its director sums up the pitch as “Tony Hawk but you’re a train”—an influence and shorthand, not a licensed Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game.

What is Denshattack!?

Developed by Undercoders and published by Fireshine Games, Denshattack! is a single-player, trick-based 3D platformer. The player rides a customizable train through a stylized dystopian Japan, performing tricks, pursuing high scores, and taking on rivals and bosses. Steam also lists Boltray Games as a publisher.

Its unusual premise started with a small Japanese toy train. In a Game Informer preview published January 27, 2026, director David Jaumandreu said he imagined the toy doing finger-skate-style tricks. The preview places the game’s reveal at Gamescom the previous August; its additional article content is subscription-gated, so the accessible excerpt does not establish further hands-on details. The toy’s manufacturer and model have not been identified.

Is Denshattack! like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater?

Yes, in its score-chasing, trick-combo energy—but the comparison has a clear limit. Jaumandreu says the team wanted the flow of chaining tricks and combos associated with games such as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. He also names SSX, Jet Set Radio, and Sonic as reference points, so Tony Hawk is not the only influence.

Design element Tony Hawk-style comparison Denshattack!’s approach
Movement space Skateparks let players move around the environment. Railway routes constrain the path and make route timing part of the challenge.
Trick expression A skateboarder performs board tricks. A train performs moves such as ollies, kickflips, and grinds.
Scoring flow Players chain tricks into combos and chase scores. High scores and linked tricks are central to the publisher’s description; momentum and timing shape the flow.
Setting and story Varies by game and level. Emi’s journey unfolds in a stylized dystopian Japan, with rival trains, gangs, and boss encounters.

The crucial difference is freedom of movement. A train cannot simply turn off the track and carve around a skatepark. Jaumandreu calls the tracks “our skatepark,” explaining in an Xbox Wire article published July 15, 2026, that the team wanted players to focus on “timing, rhythm and creativity” rather than freely steering everywhere.

How do you do tricks with a train?

The game translates familiar skate-game moves into actions performed by a train on a fixed route. Publisher descriptions list ollies, kickflips, and grinds. Instead of treating the railway as scenery, the design makes it the course: players need to read the route, time their actions, preserve momentum, and link tricks together.

Momentum replaces free roaming

In Jaumandreu’s account, the train’s weight makes momentum something players must manage. The track limits where the train can go, but that constraint can create a rhythm: anticipate what is coming, act at the right moment, then carry speed into the next opportunity. The intended skill is not steering anywhere at will; it is making the most of the route.

Combos turn the route into a score challenge

As in score-focused skate games, chaining tricks is part of the appeal. The train’s movement and the timing of track features shape when those combinations are possible. The publisher also describes rivals and boss encounters, broadening the challenge beyond setting a high score.

What story and setting does Denshattack! have?

The publisher describes Emi’s journey through a fictional, dystopian Japan, with locations including Kyushu, Osaka, Tokyo, and Hokkaido. These are settings within the game, not claims about how real Japanese railways operate.

Jaumandreu says the story is about people who do not conform and have been pushed out of society. In his description, abandoned railway lines become spaces reclaimed by an outlawed subculture. That premise connects the train tricks to self-expression and community, rather than making them only a scoring mechanic.

Will Denshattack! get a physical release?

A physical edition was not confirmed in the interview with Undercoders published by Nintendo Life in 2026. Director David Jaumandreu said the team wanted one, but it depended on the game’s reception and whether a release could be justified. That is a conditional statement from the interview, not confirmation of a retail edition or a guarantee that plans remain unchanged.
