If Windows reports that dependmgr.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the failed program—not Windows itself—is usually the place to start. Before replacing anything, identify the application that installed dependmgr.dll, when the error began, and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Quick diagnostic checklist
- Which program shows the error? Check the dialog title, shortcut, Start menu entry, or the path shown in the message.
- When does it happen? Note whether it appears when launching the program, uninstalling it, updating it, or running an installer.
- What changed first? Look for a failed update, partial uninstall, disk cleanup, backup restore, or antivirus quarantine.
- Is the application old?
dependmgr.dllis associated with legacy Microsoft setup and product packages, not with current Windows components. - Do you still have the original installer? Original media or a verifiable Microsoft distribution is safer and more reliable than an isolated DLL.
- Is Windows 64-bit? The documented file inventories identify this legacy file as x86, so a 32-bit application needs its matching private copy.
What dependmgr.dll belongs to
dependmgr.dll is described in historical file records as a Suite Integration Toolkit Object. It is an obscure application DLL used by older Microsoft product and setup packages. It should not be treated as a modern Windows system file, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, driver, or current .NET Framework file.

- Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
- Visual FoxPro 9.0 installation files

These products did not necessarily ship the same build. One historical x86 listing records version 5.0.1164.0 and a size of 176,912 bytes, while another public inventory associates a different build with Visual Studio .NET. The filename alone cannot identify the correct version, language, architecture, or owning product.

That is why copying the first dependmgr.dll you find into C:WindowsSystem32 is unsafe. The correct file normally belongs in the affected product’s own installation directory, beside the executable or setup files that use it.
Fix 1: Repair the application first
This is the fastest safe repair when the program is still listed in Windows.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the application again.
Not every traditional desktop program exposes Advanced options or Repair. If the button is absent, use the program’s own installer:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall/Change, Change, or Repair, depending on what appears.
- Complete the wizard using the original installation source if requested.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
A successful repair restores the application’s private files without placing them in a Windows folder. If the same message remains, continue with a complete reinstall rather than trying random DLL copies.
Fix 2: Reinstall the legacy Microsoft product
A damaged or incomplete product installation is the most likely cause when repair fails.
Before uninstalling, check whether you have:
- The original CD, DVD, ISO, or verified installation archive
- The product’s license information
- Any required service-pack media
- Application data that needs to be backed up
Then reinstall cleanly:
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected Microsoft product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- If the product folder remains, do not delete it immediately. Check it for project files, templates, configuration, or data.
- Run the original installer using Run as administrator.
- Install the base product completely.
- Restart Windows.
- Apply the correct product update or service pack.
- Launch the application again.
For Visual FoxPro 9.0, install the base product before applying Microsoft’s Visual FoxPro service-pack material. Microsoft provides documentation for Visual FoxPro 9.0 Service Pack 1 and a later Visual FoxPro 9.0 SP2 rollup. The SP2 package is an update, not a general-purpose replacement for dependmgr.dll.

If the failure involves Visual Studio .NET 2003 setup, use the original product media and the applicable update. Microsoft’s surviving Visual Studio .NET 2003 SP1 security update is not a standalone replacement for every missing setup file.

Use a supported replacement, the vendor’s compatibility guidance, or a suitably isolated older operating-system environment.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and cleanup history
Security software or disk-cleanup utilities can remove a private application DLL.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the application folder or
dependmgr.dll. - Do not restore the file solely because its name matches the error.
- Restore it only when the file belongs to the installed product and the original installer or source is trusted.
- If you are uncertain, leave it quarantined, run a malware scan, and reinstall the parent application from trusted media.
Also review any third-party antivirus quarantine and cleanup logs. A clean reinstall is preferable to restoring an unknown or mismatched DLL.
Fix 4: Confirm the architecture and installation path
The historical records for dependmgr.dll identify an x86 file. That points to a 32-bit legacy component.

Check the application path:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Look for the application executable and its nearby support files.
- Confirm that the program was installed completely in that directory.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64 by default. Those folders are not interchangeable storage locations for application files. A global copy can create version conflicts, while the application may specifically require a private build beside its executable.
If Windows says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” the file may be corrupt, the architecture may be wrong, the signature may be damaged, or the old program may be incompatible with the current release.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is actually missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that dependmgr.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

If the file exists in the application directory:
- Confirm that the application’s installer completed without errors.
- Check the product’s installation log.
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start.
- Review Windows Logs > Application around the time of the failure.
- Look for the exact executable and module named in the event.
- Use a trusted dependency-analysis tool or the product’s own diagnostic logs to identify the missing dependency.
Microsoft explains this distinction in its guidance about dynamic-link library dependencies. Do not resolve a dependency chain by downloading unrelated DLLs one at a time. Reinstalling the complete product usually restores the correct group of files.
Fix 6: Use Windows repair commands only for broader corruption
dependmgr.dll is not established as a current Windows component. Therefore, System File Checker is not expected to restore an application-private copy that Windows never owned.
Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, such as built-in applications, system services, or multiple unrelated programs.

- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but the application still fails, return to the application repair or reinstall path.

A display, storage, or chipset driver is not the normal source of a missing application DLL. Consider drivers only if the same incident includes device failures, graphics crashes, installation errors, or several programs failing after a driver change.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the symptoms.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the legacy application that owns dependmgr.dll.
Fix 8: Restore the application or system state
Use System Restore only when the failure clearly began after a recent software change and no current installer is available.
- Search Start for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failed update or uninstall.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
If the application was removed or its files were damaged, restoring the complete application from a known-good backup is safer than restoring one DLL. Confirm that the backup contains the entire product directory and its installer or recovery information.
Do not register dependmgr.dll automatically
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command for missing runtime or setup files.
Running:
regsvr32 dependmgr.dll
may produce an entry-point error and does not rebuild the application. Use registration only when the product’s documentation explicitly requires it. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.

FAQ
Is dependmgr.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Available evidence associates it with older Microsoft setup and product packages, not with current Windows installations. Do not expect Windows Update, SFC, or a Windows feature to provide it.

The filename alone cannot prove ownership. Visual Studio .NET, Visual FoxPro 9.0, and Windows Small Business Server 2003 are documented associations, but another legacy Microsoft product may be involved. Identify the parent program from the error dialog, shortcut, install path, Event Viewer, or recent software history.
Should I download dependmgr.dll from a DLL website?
No. An isolated download may contain malware, the wrong historical build, the wrong language, or the wrong architecture. It may also leave the actual application installation damaged. Restore the complete product from original media or a verifiable Microsoft distribution.
Why does the error say the module is missing when the file is present?
A dependency of dependmgr.dll may be missing, incompatible, or damaged. Check installer logs and dependency information before replacing files.
Can I copy it to System32?
Not by default. This is normally an application-private legacy DLL. Put files back through the product installer so the correct version and location are restored.
What if reinstalling still fails?
Record the exact error text and path, inspect Event Viewer and antivirus history, review the installer log, and check whether the product supports the current Windows release. If the product is obsolete, move it to a supported replacement or isolated environment rather than weakening Windows security.
