desktoptip.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows file associated with Microsoft IME, the input system used for complex-language text entry. If desktoptip.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows and the relevant language component instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is commonly associated with Windows input-method components. A reported Windows 8.1 location is:

C:WindowsSystem32InputMethodSHARED
That path is useful when checking a file, but the filename alone does not prove that a copy on your PC is genuine. A file outside a normal Windows component directory needs separate investigation.

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
Time needed: 10–20 minutes, plus download time
A damaged or incomplete update can leave a protected Windows component unavailable. Install pending updates before running repair commands so Windows can receive current component files.

- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the program that reported
desktoptip.dll.
If the error has disappeared, the missing component was likely restored during servicing. If it remains, continue with the Windows image repair below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. See Microsoft’s System File Checker repair procedure.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to reach 100 percent and finish. Do not close the window if progress appears paused.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
DISM may report that the restore operation completed successfully. SFC may then report that it found no integrity violations or that it repaired corrupt files. Both outcomes are positive. Test the program after restarting rather than assuming the command alone solved the problem.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop and keep it for troubleshooting. Run Windows Update again, restart, and repeat DISM followed by SFC once. If the same file still cannot be repaired, use a suitable Windows repair source or move to System Restore and Windows recovery rather than copying a DLL manually.
Repeating SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected issues, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the proper built-in path.
Fix 3: Reinstall the affected language or IME
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Microsoft IMEs are built into Windows for languages that need more complex text input, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. If the error appeared after changing language settings or installing a language pack, rebuild that component through Windows rather than replacing desktoptip.dll.

- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Time & language > Language & region.
- In Windows 10, select Time & Language > Language.
- Find the affected language under Preferred languages.
- Select its … menu and open Language options.
- Review the installed language features and keyboard layouts.
- Remove an unused or damaged keyboard layout if Windows allows it.
- If the complete language must be rebuilt, remove the language, restart Windows, then return to the same page.
- Select Add a language, choose the required language, and install it with its language and input features.
- Restart and test typing, the language switcher, and the program that reported the error.
Microsoft’s instructions for this process are in Manage language and keyboard input settings.
Do not remove a language that you still need until you know you can add it again. If Windows refuses to remove or reinstall the language, run DISM and SFC first, then try the language settings again.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the program that displays the message
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A game or application can display a Windows loader error even when it does not own the missing file. The launcher may be the process that first requests an IME component. That does not make the application the source of desktoptip.dll.
Use the program’s own repair option first:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from the application’s original developer or use its official launcher.
- Install the program again and test it before adding unofficial files or modifications.
For a game, use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command where available. If the error also appears elsewhere in Windows, do not keep reinstalling the game. That pattern points back to Windows or the IME component.

Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after an update, language installation, or system cleanup. A quarantine entry does not prove that the detection was false, so verify the file before restoring anything.
- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
desktoptip.dll. - Expand the entry and review the detected path, threat name, and action.
- If the file is in the normal Windows input-method directory and the publisher and digital signature are valid, review the available restore action.
- Restart Windows and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restore behavior in Protection History. Restoring a threat can cause Defender to detect it again, so do not broadly disable protection or add an exception simply to make the error disappear.

If the file was found in a game folder, a temporary directory, a download folder, or another unexpected location, leave it quarantined until the system has been scanned and the file’s origin is understood.
Fix 6: Scan for malware if the location or behavior is suspicious
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
A genuine Windows IME file should not normally be treated as proof of malware, but an impostor using the same filename can be dangerous. Warning signs include a copy outside Windows input-method directories, repeated recreation after deletion, an unknown publisher, or multiple unrelated DLL errors.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If malware appears persistent, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now.
- Save work before the offline scan begins.
Defender Offline scans from the Windows Recovery Environment, which can help when malicious software interferes with normal Windows processes. Microsoft’s guidance is available under Virus and threat protection.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptom points to input hardware
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A keyboard, touchpad, tablet, or specialty input device can create a separate input failure, but a driver update is not the primary repair for a missing protected Windows IME file. Use this step when the error began with a device change or when the device itself stopped working.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, and any category matching the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the device.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if available.
Guessing through many driver packages can obscure the actual cause. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing which drivers it identifies as outdated, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional aid, and obtain critical device drivers from the hardware maker when possible.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for restoring, repairing, or locating a missing DLL.
Do not run this as a routine response:
regsvr32 desktoptip.dll
There is no verified evidence that DesktopTIP.dll is a self-registering COM server. Registering it is therefore unlikely to repair an IME component and may produce another error. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s actual purpose.

Do not download desktoptip.dll from a DLL site
Random DLL download sites can provide a wrong build, wrong architecture, modified code, or a file carrying malware. Even a clean-looking replacement may not match the Windows component store, and copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can create a second problem.
There is no verified Microsoft redistributable, Visual C++ package, DirectX package, or standalone official DesktopTIP.dll download. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows language settings, Microsoft Defender, or the original application’s installer instead.
When to use System Restore or repair Windows
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began after a recent update, language change, driver installation, or other system modification and a restore point predates the failure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start and search for
Create a restore point. - Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the first error.
- Review the affected programs and updates.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files but rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs. Microsoft’s explanation is available at System Restore.
If there is no suitable restore point, DISM cannot repair the image, and the language component remains broken, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first. A clean reinstall should be the last resort, not the first response to a single missing DLL.
Why the error appears
Common causes include:
- A protected Windows or IME component was corrupted or removed.
- A Windows update or language-pack installation was incomplete.
- Antivirus software quarantined a file.
- One application is damaged and reports the loader failure.
- Malware replaced or added a file outside the normal Windows directory.
- A recent system change left incompatible input components behind.
The exact message also matters. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that desktoptip.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the calling process is unavailable. “Not designed to run on Windows” usually indicates corruption, an incompatible build, or a damaged dependency. Neither message makes downloading a replacement DLL the correct first step.

FAQ
Is desktoptip.dll legitimate?
Yes, DesktopTIP.dll is reported as a Microsoft Windows file associated with Microsoft IME. The location, digital signature, and file properties still matter because malware can use the same filename.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes it belong to Windows or to my game?
It is associated with Windows and Microsoft IME. A game or application may be the process that displays the error without owning the file.
Is it always 32-bit or 64-bit?
No authoritative current Microsoft file matrix establishes one architecture for every installation. A 64-bit Windows system can run 32-bit applications, so the computer’s general architecture does not answer which copy a particular process needs.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first step. There is no verified evidence that desktoptip.dll belongs to those redistributables. Repair Windows and the relevant language component first, then repair the application that reports the error.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM before SFC, review the CBS details, and try again after Windows Update. If repair still fails, use an appropriate repair source, System Restore, or Windows recovery rather than manually replacing the file.
Recommended Free Tools
What if the file is outside the Windows input-method directory?
Do not automatically restore or allow it. Check its digital signature and publisher, scan it with Microsoft Defender, and investigate the program that placed it there.
Does this apply to Windows 8.1?
The reported file records are associated with Windows 8.1, whose support ended on January 10, 2023. Current Windows installations may organize or service language components differently, so use the Windows version’s own Update, language, repair, and recovery tools.
