A community breakdown groups the hunt differently: 24 pieces in Nether areas, 11 off the Dreadnaught, 6 from Ambition and Resolve, 5 in Court of Blades, 5 from the Drifter, and 9 from Nether secrets. Those are community-reported categories, not official Bungie counts, and they do not map one-to-one onto every chapter heading above.
Where to find the four pieces in Eris’s Apartments
The Escapist’s 2025 puzzle guide identifies four apartment-area pieces: two Pawns, one Knight, and one Bishop. Its route begins by entering Eris’s Throne World through the green portal, then locating a hidden room below the ledge near the book table.

How to find the missing piece at 59/60
- Open the relevant Triumph or source group in game. Compare its progress with the area counts above and note which named group is incomplete.
- Check the off-Dreadnaught landmarks first if those groups are short. Use the Europa, EDZ, and Tower pointers above as leads, and verify the Tower ventilation route visually if the Daito-room piece is missing.
- For an incomplete Nether or activity group, search within that group. The group count is useful for narrowing the hunt, but the available text does not provide a trustworthy coordinate-by-coordinate route for all of these pieces.
- Recheck the source condition, not just the room. Some pieces are associated with activity, secret, vendor, or orb categories; a location search alone may not resolve a missing source-linked entry.
- Use a current-build visual guide for the final confirmation. The location reporting cited here dates to 2025, and it does not verify that every historical spawn condition remains unchanged.
Do you need all 60 to access the chess puzzle?
No source cited here establishes that collecting all 60 is necessary for every puzzle-entry route. The Escapist describes a route using the four pieces in Eris’s apartment, and GameSpot covers the En Passant Triumph and chessboard access. A Bungie.net forum post by player jhermannITJ reports an alternate Middlegame skip using those four pieces and says Act 2 progress is required for that route. Treat that Act 2 prerequisite as player-reported guidance, not as a current official requirement.
