Altars of Sorrow is a cooperative public event in Sorrow’s Harbor on the Moon. Work through five escalating waves by stopping Nightmares from reaching the altar, use Swordbearer cleavers to break shielded Wizards’ defenses, then defend the altar whenever the final boss becomes immune.
Where to find Altars of Sorrow
Travel to Sorrow’s Harbor on the Moon and join the Altars of Sorrow special public event. Bungie currently lists it among Destiny 2’s available special public events. The Shadowkeep support page does not establish that owning the Shadowkeep Pack is required to participate, so check the event node in-game if access is unclear.

How the event works
The activity progresses through five increasingly difficult enemy tiers, followed by a final Nightmare boss. Its central pressure mechanic is a countdown: ordinary Hive kills help extend it, but Nightmares that reach the altar sacrifice themselves and cost time. Prioritize those altar-bound Nightmares over routine enemies whenever you have to choose.

Wave strategy
Tiers one and two: protect the timer
Follow the Nightmares moving toward the altar and eliminate them before they can sacrifice. Clear nearby Hive as opportunities allow, but do not let ordinary enemies distract you from the targets that threaten the countdown.
Tier three onward: break the Wizard shields
Starting with tier three, shielded Wizards interrupt the wave. Find and defeat the Swordbearer Knights, pick up their dropped cleavers, and use the cleavers to break the Wizards’ shields. Once the interruption is handled, return your attention to Nightmares approaching the altar. Historical guides describe the Wizards as protected from ordinary damage until their shields are broken.
Keep moving as the event advances
The active altar changes as the event moves through its stages, so head to the next active location rather than lingering at a completed wave. Historical references say that running out of time during the boss phase sends the event back to tier five.

Damage the Nightmare boss while it is vulnerable. When it becomes immune, stop spending attacks on the boss and clear the Nightmares trying to sacrifice at the nearby altar. Completing that objective ends the interruption and restores the damage window. Repeat the switch between boss damage and altar defense as needed.

Older community references associate the three final bosses with specific weapons: Taniks with Apostate, Zydron with Heretic, and Phogoth with Blasphemer. They also describe a daily boss rotation. Treat these as historic reward and rotation associations, not guarantees about today’s drops or schedule.
Bungie’s 2026 updates changed the destination loot framework. In its May 28, 2026 preview, Bungie said that unique destination activities including Altars of Sorrow would distribute tiered rewards. Update 9.7.0, released June 9, 2026, confirmed destination reward updates that include new perks, set bonuses, and gear tiers for non-craftable weapons, as well as tiered weapons and armor from more destination sources. These announcements do not specify Altars’ exact current drop table or probabilities. Check the in-game reward display for current items and tiers.
