Detroit: Become Human is worth considering if you want a cinematic, choice-led story more than an action game. You guide three android protagonists through prompted scenes and exploration; decisions can change relationships, scenes, survival, and the wider story. Its polished presentation and branching narrative appeal to many players, but critics are divided on its writing, themes, and quick-time-event-heavy play.

What kind of game is Detroit: Become Human?

Developed by Quantic Dream and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Detroit: Become Human is a cinematic adventure set in a near-future Detroit. It follows three androids whose stories intersect: Connor, an investigator assisting the police; Kara, a fugitive protecting a young girl; and Markus, a central figure in an android uprising. The official PlayStation announcement introduces those three perspectives and frames the story around player choices: PlayStation Blog announcement.

The game is closer to an interactive drama than an open-ended action game. You explore bounded scenes, inspect objects, make dialogue and story decisions, and respond to on-screen prompts during tense moments. It is designed around watching a story develop while taking an active role in its direction, not around freely roaming a large world or mastering a deep combat system.

Do your choices matter?

Yes, though not every decision transforms the plot. Choices can affect relationships, the scenes you see, who survives, and how the broader story unfolds. The official announcement states that characters can die and that player actions can cause scenes to be missed. It is best to think of the choices as shaping a set of branching paths and outcomes, rather than assuming every small interaction produces a dramatic divergence.

#1 Best Overall

A flowchart makes branches visible after scenes, helping show where decisions led and offering a reason to revisit chapters. Critics have praised the transparency of that branching and the persistence of choices, while also noting that the overall narrative can still feel fairly linear. No dependable total count of endings is established here, so a single number would overstate what is known.

How does it play?

Most interaction consists of exploration, choices, and quick-time events (QTEs), in which you respond to prompts on screen. A 2018 pre-release hands-on by TIME described stick-direction prompts and frequent QTEs, alongside exploration within mission boundaries; the reporter also found the controls took time to learn. That is an early hands-on observation, not a current independent test: TIME’s hands-on report.

  • Create your own story: Observe, think, decide, feel, and follow your intuition to tell the unique story for eac h of three playable characters
  • Choice / Consequences : Confront moral dilemmas, make your decisions and face the consequences as all your choices will affect the story outcome
  • Become Human through the eyes of Androids: E volve and experience the emerging sense of true emotions and discover what it really means to be human through the eyes of a machine wanting to be free

This prompt-driven design helps keep scenes moving and can make crucial moments feel immediate. It can also interrupt the flow, especially if you prefer direct, continuously controlled gameplay. Review excerpts collected by Metacritic reflect that split: some praise the consequential decisions and presentation, while others criticize QTEs and the writing. The game’s appeal depends in part on whether you enjoy performing actions through prompts as part of a cinematic scene.

What do reviews say about the story and presentation?

Reception is generally favorable but not unanimous. Metacritic’s snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, displayed a critic aggregate of 78/100 from 104 reviews and a user score of 8.7/10 from 9,295 ratings. Those scores capture broad approval alongside disagreement, not a guarantee that the game’s themes or storytelling will work for every player. See Metacritic’s review page.

Review excerpts often praise the visuals, music, and the sense that decisions carry forward. The sharper disagreements concern how well the writing handles its large social themes: one critical view is that intimate character moments work better than the broader commentary, while other reviewers find the themes or execution less persuasive. Strong presentation does not settle that debate. If you want subtle, consistently nuanced writing, the subject matter may be more compelling than the way every part of it is handled.

Where can you play it, and what is it rated?

Sony lists the game for PS4, with PS5 play supported and a note that some PS4 features may be absent. Metacritic also lists a PC version. Steam’s store search description lists 4K, 60 fps, and mouse-and-keyboard or gamepad controls, but current PC system requirements and edition details are not established here. Is Detroit: Become Human worth playing?

It is a strong fit for players who enjoy branching stories, cinematic presentation, and replaying scenes to explore alternate paths. It is less suited to players looking for open-ended action, fluid hands-on control throughout, or uniformly subtle treatment of serious themes. The central choice is not whether the game has consequences—it does—but whether its prompt-led format and particular approach to storytelling suit you.
