Destiny 2: Ash & Iron launched on September 9, 2025, as the Major Update for The Edge of Fate. Bungie’s September 3 preview outlined planned weapon, perk, Exotic armor, ability, and Crucible tuning; the launch brought the Reclaim activity, an Epic version of The Desert Perpetual raid, Portal additions, new rewards, and higher Power limits.
When did Destiny 2: Ash & Iron release?
Ash & Iron launched September 9, 2025. Bungie identified it as a Major Update for The Edge of Fate in its launch announcement. The release date is not a planned or upcoming date: the update is already part of Destiny 2’s history.

Bungie published its sandbox preview on September 3, six days before launch. That preview described intended balance work, while the September 9 launch blog described the activities and progression arriving with the update. Those are different kinds of notes: the former was a preview of tuning, not a complete substitute for final patch notes.
What did the early patch-notes preview say?
Bungie’s September 3 sandbox tuning preview covered weapons, perks, Exotic armor, abilities, and Crucible combat. It emphasized how changes were meant to read and feel in play, but the preview itself cautioned that some adjustments would be best understood by playing. Its descriptions of goals should not be mistaken for independent testing or proof that every planned value remained unchanged in the final release.
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
Weapon reticles and firing information
Bungie said it was adjusting hip-fire reticles to communicate weapon performance more clearly and to reduce visual complexity. Examples of the design concerns included perk indicators and charge meters. Reticle elements were also repositioned to account for changes involving field of view, bloom, and auto-aim, with some weapon-specific exceptions.
The practical focus was readability: reticle details needed to remain useful as a weapon fired and as its behavior changed, rather than crowding the aiming view. The preview described the intended approach; it did not establish that every reticle or weapon behaved identically.
Perks, Exotic armor, and abilities
The preview identified perk tuning, Exotic armor adjustments, and a handful of ability changes as part of the sandbox work. It was an overview of planned areas, not a full catalog of every effect or final numerical change. Readers looking for a specific build interaction should distinguish the preview’s stated plans from the values and behavior documented in later game updates.

- Online only and requires a PlayStation Plus membership.
- An incredible story set within a newly-imagined, always-connected universe filled with action and adventure.
- Create your character, forge your legend by defeating powerful foes, and earn unique and customizable weapons, gear, and vehicles.
- Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay that redefines the genre and breaks traditional conventions of story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes.
Crucible tuning
Bungie also said some of the tuning targeted Crucible combat. Where a change was specific to PvP, it should be read as such rather than assumed to apply unchanged to PvE. The preview’s scope was broad, so it does not support treating every listed sandbox adjustment as a universal change across both modes.

What arrived with Ash & Iron?
Reclaim: a three-player Plaguelands activity
Reclaim sent a fireteam of three through four areas of the Plaguelands. Bungie described its objectives as narrative-driven and time-pressured. Players could select modifiers and build around their abilities, and the activity was available through the Portal.
The Desert Perpetual Epic raid
The update added an Epic version of The Desert Perpetual, building on the original raid with additional challenges, rewards, and pursuits. Bungie announced that Contest Mode would run for the first 48 hours after launch. It also scheduled the World First race to begin September 27, 2025; that date is historical, not a future event recommendation.

Portal activities and additions
Bungie’s launch blog listed the following Portal content and changes:
- Dungeon Lairs in Pinnacle Ops.
- Two Exotic Missions: Presage and //node.ovrd.AVALON//.
- Two Battlegrounds, three strikes, and three Offensives.
- Three Tomb of Elders paths, which the launch announcement said would arrive the following week.
The same announcement described the update as bringing further Portal refinements. The activity counts above reflect what Bungie listed at launch; the Tomb of Elders timing was an announced schedule, not confirmation here of the exact dates on which each path ultimately became available.
Rewards Pass, weapons, and armor
Ash & Iron introduced a 110-rank Rewards Pass. Bungie highlighted an Exotic Strand Micro-Missile Pulse Rifle that fired sticky bombs which could be detonated shortly after firing. The launch announcement also noted new weapons and armor bonuses for Portal activities.
Power progression
Bungie announced 100 additional Power levels with the update. The hard cap rose to 500, and players could reach a maximum of 550 through Prime Engrams in Portal activities and The Desert Perpetual raid. Reaching 500 unlocked Tier 5 rewards from several sources, according to the launch blog.

What other dates did Bungie announce?
The launch blog included a schedule for content and events after September 9, 2025. These dates were Bungie’s announced plans at launch and are now historical:
| Date in the announcement | Planned item |
|---|---|
| Week of September 16, 2025 | Iron Banner scheduled to return |
| September 27, 2025 | The Desert Perpetual Epic Raid World First race scheduled to begin |
| October 7, 2025 | Heliostat scheduled; Shotgun Arms Week also scheduled for that week |
| Weeks of October 21 and 28, 2025 | Festival of the Lost scheduled |
The schedule records what Bungie announced in the launch blog; it should not be used by itself to establish whether an event ran exactly as planned.

How does Ash & Iron fit into Destiny 2 now?
Ash & Iron was a 2025 update, but it was not the end of Destiny 2’s update history. Bungie released Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026. In its Update 9.7.0 notes, Bungie called it the final major patch and introduced the notes as more than 17,000 words; that figure describes the length of the later patch-note article, not Ash & Iron.
Bungie Help’s Monument of Triumph and Update 9.7.0 Support Guide states that, following the June 9, 2026 release, Destiny 2 would no longer receive planned live-service content updates. The guide does not rule out stability or health hotfixes. That current service context makes it especially important to read Ash & Iron’s dated announcements as records of a past update, rather than as previews of forthcoming content.
