Destiny 2’s CENTIPEDE error means the game lost its connection to Bungie’s servers. It does not identify whether the cause is Bungie’s service, your home network, your internet provider, or an upstream connection. Check Bungie’s service information first; if the error happened once, restart the game. If it keeps happening, test a wired connection and work through network checks in order.
What Destiny 2 error code CENTIPEDE means
Bungie describes CENTIPEDE as a general networking error caused by a loss of connection to its servers. The code is not a precise diagnosis: it does not prove that your router is faulty or that Bungie is experiencing an outage. The error wording “Server Lost” describes the disconnect, but Bungie identifies the error as CENTIPEDE rather than a separate, more specific code. Bungie’s CENTIPEDE support page explains the code and its possible network context.

Possible factors include unstable Wi-Fi, a Strict or Type 3 NAT, restrictions on a university or corporate network, ISP limitations, or packet loss on a regional or upstream route. Some of these are outside your control, and a transient problem may pass without any change to your setup.
What to do when CENTIPEDE appears
- Check Bungie’s service information. Look for reported service problems or maintenance before changing local settings. If Destiny 2 is offline or undergoing maintenance, router changes are unlikely to help. Use Bungie’s service information guidance to check the current situation.
- Restart Destiny 2 after a one-off disconnect. Bungie recommends closing and restarting the game when a disconnect happens once. See its general disconnect guidance.
- If the error recurs, test Ethernet. If you play over Wi-Fi, temporarily connect your console or PC to the router with an Ethernet cable. Bungie recommends switching to a wired connection; the test helps determine whether Wi-Fi stability is involved, but it cannot rule out an outage or ISP-side problem. Bungie’s CENTIPEDE guidance and its network troubleshooting guide cover wired networking.
- Track the pattern. Note when the disconnects happen and whether you see CENTIPEDE repeatedly or a variety of error codes. Bungie’s disconnect guidance says different patterns can point to different kinds of instability; it also recommends platform cache clearing and, when several different disconnects occur, power cycling network hardware or asking your ISP about connection stability and packet loss. Follow the steps for your platform in Bungie’s disconnect guide.
- Check NAT or advanced router settings only after basic tests. Bungie discusses NAT, UPnP, and port forwarding as advanced troubleshooting. A Strict or Type 3 NAT may be relevant, but avoid changing ports indiscriminately. If you are on a campus, workplace, or otherwise restricted network, its administrator or your ISP may control the settings. See Bungie’s network troubleshooting guide.
- Wait or contact your ISP if the problem appears upstream. Some regional internet conditions and packet loss can affect players and may clear on their own. If service is available and the basic checks do not help, Bungie’s guidance recommends contacting your ISP about connection stability or packet loss. Bungie’s CENTIPEDE page notes that some network conditions are outside a player’s control.
When a wired connection helps—and when it does not
An Ethernet cable is useful if you need to test whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the disconnect. Bungie’s recommendation is to switch to wired networking when possible. If the error stops over Ethernet, that is evidence that the wireless connection may be part of the problem; it is not proof that every future disconnect will be fixed. A wired test will not resolve a Bungie service issue, ISP restriction, or upstream packet loss.

Bungie has cited a historical incident in which it detected “25% packet loss from the UK” while users in that region experienced errors. The support page does not give the incident year, so that figure is an example of a past regional condition—not a current rate or a typical level of packet loss. Bungie Help also says such internet conditions usually pass quickly.
