To masterwork Legendary armor, inspect it and upgrade its Energy to 10. To masterwork a Legendary weapon, inspect it and upgrade it to Tier 10, following the upgrade options and costs shown in its menu. These are in-game menu upgrades, not crafting or repair steps; current Tier-based systems mean the available options can vary by item.
What Masterworking changes
Bungie defines Legendary Masterworks as Legendary weapons and armor upgraded to have modified traits. The benefits differ by gear type.

Weapons
Bungie lists three Masterwork benefits for weapons: a defeat tracker (which may count total defeats or Crucible defeats), Orb generation on multikills, and a randomly selected weapon-stat bonus. The stat bonus can affect a property such as Range, Reload Speed, or Charge Time, and the selected stat cannot be changed. See Bungie’s Legendary Masterworks Guide and current gear guide.
Armor
Masterworking armor adds armor-stat bonuses and raises the maximum Energy available for mods. These are armor benefits, not the weapon-stat bonus or weapon defeat-tracker features.

How to recognize a Masterwork
Bungie says Masterworked gear has gold trim on its icon, tooltip, and inspection screen, including when an ornament is applied. A distinctive audio cue can also accompany a Masterwork gear drop.
How to Masterwork Legendary armor
- Open your character inventory and inspect the Legendary armor piece you want to upgrade.
- Select the piece’s Energy bar in its item menu.
- Review the displayed material cost, then hold the upgrade input shown on screen.
- Repeat the upgrade as needed until the armor reaches 10 Energy.
Armor Masterworking’s threshold in Bungie’s guide is 10 Energy. Each step’s cost depends on the piece’s current Energy level, so use the amount shown in that armor’s menu rather than relying on a fixed total.

How to Masterwork Legendary weapons
- Open your inventory and inspect the Legendary weapon.
- Select the next available upgrade Tier in the weapon’s item menu.
- Check the displayed cost and hold the upgrade input shown on screen.
- Repeat until the weapon reaches Tier 10, if that upgrade path is available for the item.
Bungie’s Masterworks guide describes weapon Masterworking as reaching Tier 10. Upgrade costs increase as the weapon advances, so the item menu is the reliable place to check the next step’s materials and amount.
Materials and where to get them
The materials required depend on the item and its current Energy or Tier. Bungie’s guide names Glimmer, Upgrade Modules, Enhancement Cores, Enhancement Prisms, and Ascendant Shards among possible costs as gear advances; it does not give one universal total for every item.

Enhancement Cores are a base material for enhancing gear and are required for Masterwork gear. Bungie lists Reward Tracks, dismantling Legendary gear, some activities, and purchases from the Tower Cryptarch as sources. Enhancement Prisms are required in the final Masterwork steps; listed sources include Reward Tracks, endgame activities, and the Cryptarch. Bungie’s current gear guidance discusses weapon and armor Tiers, and its new-player progression guide says newly earned weapons and armor have Tiers. The separate Masterworks guide still gives the Masterwork thresholds as Tier 10 for weapons and 10 Energy for armor. The official guides do not fully explain how every newer Tier-based item interacts with legacy Masterwork fields.

As a result, don’t assume every weapon or armor piece has the same upgrade path. Inspect the specific item and follow the upgrade options it actually offers. Bungie’s A Path for New Players covers the newer progression terminology.
Which gear should you Masterwork?
There is no universal best choice: the value depends on your item’s stats and your build. Compare the cost shown for each candidate with the benefit you need—such as a weapon stat bonus or additional armor Energy for mods. For weapons, remember that the selected Masterwork stat is random and cannot be changed.
