Destiny 2: Renegades Review — A Star Wars-Inspired Expansion Falls Short of Its Own Identity

Renegades adds a compelling Praxic Blade and repeatable faction missions, but its Star Wars-inspired campaign does not always feel distinctly Destiny.

Destiny 2: Renegades is a substantial, playable expansion whose most memorable additions are also its clearest successes: a lightsaber-like Praxic Blade and a repeatable Syndicate activity called the Lawless Frontier. But its conspicuous Star Wars homage often crowds out the distinctive tone the expansion is meant to serve. It falls short not because its content is broadly poor, but because its strongest ideas do less to make Destiny feel new than to make it feel familiar.

What is Destiny 2: Renegades?

Released on December 2, 2025, Renegades is the second expansion in Destiny 2’s Year of Prophecy. Bungie describes it as a Star Wars-inspired Destiny story, not a crossover that takes place outside the game’s canon. Assistant Game Director Robbie Stevens put the distinction plainly: “Rest assured, Guardians – everything in Renegades is in-canon for the Destiny universe, but we’re leaning into the aesthetic, tone and vibe of Star Wars to tell a Destiny story with Destiny characters.” (Bungie’s May 8, 2025 Q&A)

The story follows the Drifter after the Nine warn of the Barant Imperium’s superweapon, Nightfall Station. He seeks help from rival Syndicates, creating uneasy alliances as the threat grows. That setup gives the expansion a clear crime-and-faction frame, but it also places familiar space-opera imagery close to the surface.

Does the Star Wars influence help or hurt?

The homage is deliberate and unmistakable: blasters, a customizable energy sword, Jedi-like figures, familiar costumes under altered names, and recognizable story beats. Game Informer’s Matt Miller found that the borrowing could feel “odd and forced,” at times drawing attention away from qualities that make Destiny distinct. The issue is not simply that Renegades has recognizable influences; it is that the references can feel more specific than the expansion’s own identity.

New starships, vehicles, droids, weapons, and other equipment will help expand your campaign’s richness and variety.
  • A SOURCEBOOK FOR WARRIORS: Knights of Fate features support and guidance for reinforcing the themes and roles of Warriors in the narrative, from suggestions on how they could approach different challenges to the ways in which other character Careers might interact with a Warrior’s capabilities and limitations.
  • NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: Star Wars Force and Destiny is an exciting roleplaying game for adults and kids designed for 2 to 8 players and is suitable for ages 10 and older. The average playtime is approximately one hour.

That trade-off matters because Renegades is selling a Destiny story and its own new systems, not just a set of genre nods. The Star Wars aesthetic gives the expansion an immediate visual and tonal shorthand, but some of its most recognizable elements arrive with associations so strong that they risk making Destiny feel like the guest in its own world. The result is a campaign with a clear premise but an uneven sense of originality.

What works best in Renegades?

The Praxic Blade

The Praxic Blade is the most convincing use of the expansion’s lightsaber inspiration. It is customizable and built for close combat, with thrown arcs and the ability to deflect projectiles. Game Informer singled it out as the crossover’s most successful element. That praise makes sense: the weapon translates a familiar fantasy into an active combat tool rather than relying only on visual resemblance.

  • COMPATIBLE WITH THE BASE GAME: Designed to seamlessly integrate with The Witcher: Path of Destiny base game, perfect for players looking to expand their adventure.

Lawless Frontier

The Lawless Frontier is the expansion’s central repeatable activity. Players take jobs connected to Syndicates, build faction Notoriety, and can play missions solo or in a group of three. Bungie’s descriptions also include Smuggling and Sabotage jobs, Turf Wars, and Invasions; some jobs let players invade another player’s activity. The structure gives the faction story a gameplay loop beyond the campaign and provides a reason to engage with the Syndicates after meeting them in the narrative. Its long-term appeal depends on how much players enjoy repeating that loop, rather than on the premise alone. (Bungie’s launch overview; Bungie Help’s Renegades guide)

Blasters and the dungeon

Renegades adds Blasters, a new weapon archetype that uses heat-based ammunition, giving the expansion another mechanical expression of its sci-fi influences. It also adds Equilibrium, a three-player dungeon. These additions broaden the package, though the Praxic Blade and Lawless Frontier are the features most clearly tied to Renegades’ identity.

Does the expansion fall short overall?

That depends on what you expect it to accomplish. If the test is whether Renegades offers worthwhile Destiny gameplay, the evidence is positive: Game Informer praises its activity loop, content, exploration, build-crafting, and rewards, while noting that it does not fundamentally reinvent Destiny. If the test is whether the expansion turns its Star Wars inspiration into a fresh and unmistakably Destiny-shaped identity, it is less successful.

That is the narrower sense in which Renegades falls short. The Praxic Blade makes the homage work as gameplay, and the Lawless Frontier gives the expansion a strong repeatable foundation. But the campaign’s conspicuous references make originality and tonal independence harder to sustain. It is a strong expansion with a real creative limitation, not a bad one whose content fails across the board.

Is Destiny 2: Renegades worth playing?

Renegades is most compelling for players who want more Destiny activities, new combat tools, and faction-driven missions—and who are comfortable with a Star Wars homage that does not always feel fully transformed into Destiny’s own language. Its content gives the inspiration practical weight, particularly through the Praxic Blade and Lawless Frontier. Its weaker point is the campaign’s dependence on imagery and beats that can feel borrowed rather than distinctive.

The PlayStation Store listing showed 4.26 out of 5 from 475 global player ratings when accessed in 2026. That is a changing, platform-specific owner-rating snapshot, not a critic score or a universal measure of reception. (PlayStation Store listing)
