Bungie had warned players to expect login queues; after access reopened, it reported load-balancer failures and activity-server issues that caused additional connection problems. This is a retrospective on that launch incident—not a report that Destiny 2 is offline now.
What happened to Destiny 2 servers during The Final Shape launch?
Bungie’s June 2 maintenance notice set out a lengthy shutdown for The Final Shape and Update 8.0.0.1. Maintenance was scheduled to begin June 3, 2024, at 9 a.m. PDT, with Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 going offline at 9:30 a.m. PDT. Players were not expected to be able to log in again until June 4 at 10 a.m. PDT, and Bungie estimated that maintenance would conclude at noon PDT. Those were planned times, and Bungie cautioned that release timing could vary. Bungie’s maintenance schedule also warned that queues and sign-on issues could occur while background maintenance continued after logins reopened.

Queues were not an unforeseen part of the launch. In a May 23 announcement, Bungie said it expected sign-in queues during the first hours after the game returned and at peak play times in different regions. The planned downtime was 24 hours from June 3 at 9 a.m. Pacific time, and players could pre-download the expansion during that period. Bungie’s pre-launch announcement put the queue warning plainly: “When the game is brought back online and The Final Shape has launched, we expect there will be sign-in queues during the first hours and during peak play times at different places in the world.”
Once players began trying to connect on June 4, Bungie reported problems beyond the anticipated queues. In its June 4 stability update, Bungie apologized to players blocked by connection issues and attributed sign-on failures to problems with its load-balancer machines. It said it routed traffic around those machines, partially mitigating the issue within two hours of launch.

Bungie’s reported error sequence
- Load balancers: Bungie said network-related sign-on issues were associated with failures in load-balancer machines. It routed traffic around them and reported partial mitigation within two hours of launch.
- Honeydew: Bungie reported an error spike starting at 12:27 p.m. PDT and said it resolved the underlying problem by 12:46 p.m. by increasing the number of Activity Hosts configured per server.
- Weasel and Plum: Bungie said these errors began at 12:47 p.m. PDT and were fully resolved by 1:56 p.m. through server configuration changes.
These times, diagnoses, and fixes are Bungie’s account of the incident, not an independent measurement. The available updates do not establish a player-login total, a queue duration, or a record concurrency figure; the disruption should not be described as record-breaking or assigned a number of affected players without separate evidence.
Are Destiny 2 servers down now?
The incident described here is from June 4, 2024. It does not establish Destiny 2’s current server status. For a present-day outage or queue, check Bungie’s official queue guidance and the status updates from @BungieHelp, which Bungie points players to for updates. Bungie’s Year 7 support page provides launch-period context, not a live status report.

Bungie says queues regulate the number of players entering the game to help provide stable gameplay. Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 have separate queues, and wait time depends on server traffic and the concurrent player population; Bungie does not promise a fixed wait.
- If you lose your connection or are removed from a queue, you lose your place.
- If your connection fails after you reach the front, you must enter the queue again.
- Because wait times vary with traffic, restarting is not a guaranteed way to get in faster.
During the June 4 launch window, Bungie directed players to @BungieHelp for minute-by-minute updates and to its Help forum to report problems.
