Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate has a divided reception: PC Gamer praised its story direction but criticized the progression and activity structure, while Steam’s October 8, 2026 user-review snapshot was Mostly Negative overall. Those signals describe different groups and should not be treated as one verdict. The expansion adds a campaign on Kepler, new destination abilities and the opening chapter of Bungie’s Fate Saga—but whether those changes appeal depends on what you want from Destiny 2.

What is The Edge of Fate, and do you need Destiny 2?

The Edge of Fate launched on July 15, 2025, as downloadable content for Destiny 2. Steam lists the base game as required, so this is an expansion rather than a standalone game. Bungie’s guide covers the expansion’s launch and campaign, while Steam’s listing identifies the base-game requirement.

What does the expansion add?

A new destination and campaign

The story takes Guardians to Kepler, a new destination Bungie describes as shaped by hidden secrets and the influence of the Nine. The campaign offers two difficulties: “Be Brave,” described as the classic campaign experience, and “Become Legend,” with harder missions and stronger combatants. Bungie recommends the latter for experienced players with a broad arsenal. These are the publisher’s descriptions of the setting and difficulty options, not independent judgments about their quality. Bungie’s guide explains the campaign options.

Abilities built around Kepler

Bungie’s reveal recap describes three destination abilities: Matterspark transforms a Guardian to move through tight spaces and across terrain; the Relocator Cannon teleports players; and Mattermorph uses dark matter and Strand to manipulate surroundings. Their intended role is to add new ways to move through and interact with Kepler. Whether they feel inventive or interrupt the usual combat rhythm is a matter of player experience; the feature descriptions alone do not settle that question. Bungie’s recap outlines the abilities.

What are critics saying?

The available critic evidence points to a tradeoff rather than a uniformly praised or dismissed expansion. Metacritic displayed a score of 63 from 14 critic reviews on the page retrieved October 8, 2026. That is an aggregator snapshot, not a complete measure of every outlet or player’s opinion. Metacritic’s review page is the source for that dated count and score.

PC Gamer’s July 29, 2025 review praised the story’s new direction and narrative setup, but argued that the surrounding gameplay, progression changes and activity structure weakened the experience. That assessment belongs to PC Gamer’s review; it is one critic’s perspective, not a universal player finding. Read PC Gamer’s review.

How to read the criticism

  • Story and world: The narrative setup drew praise from PC Gamer, while Kepler’s appeal is a separate question from the story’s direction.
  • Destination abilities: Bungie describes their intended functions, but the cited critic assessment does not establish how all players feel about using them.
  • Progression and loot: PC Gamer criticized progression changes. Bungie had announced five gear tiers, with higher tiers intended to offer better stats, perks and bonus mechanics; that design goal does not prove the progression worked well in practice.
  • Activities: PC Gamer also criticized activity structure. The evidence here supports that specific critique, not a claim that every activity or player experience is the same.
  • Value: The expansion is more likely to suit players interested in the campaign and the next saga than someone primarily seeking a compelling long-term loot and activity loop. That is a practical way to weigh the documented tradeoffs, not a measured consensus.

Why are Steam reviews negative?

On October 8, 2026, Steam showed The Edge of Fate as Mostly Negative among English-language reviews, with 30% positive from 2,152 reviews. Its recent-review label was Very Negative, with 6% positive from 72 reviews. Steam also reported 2,693 purchaser reviews across all languages as Mostly Negative. These are platform-specific user-review snapshots, not critic scores or a population-wide survey; the figures can change as reviews are added or revised. Steam’s listing displays the ratings.

The cited sources do not establish one definitive reason for Steam users’ ratings. The critical concerns documented by PC Gamer—progression and activity structure—offer relevant context, but should not be presented as the explanation for every negative user review. A low platform score signals dissatisfaction among reviewers on that platform; it does not identify a single cause or predict whether an individual player will enjoy the campaign.

What larger change was Bungie aiming for?

Bungie positioned The Edge of Fate as the beginning of the Fate Saga and the first expansion in the Year of Prophecy. In its May 6, 2025 reveal recap, the company described a yearly plan of two paid expansions and two major updates available to all players, as well as the Portal, a new activity-selection screen. Bungie’s Destiny 2 Team wrote, “The Edge of Fate also sets the stage for our next saga, the Fate Saga.” These statements explain the expansion’s place in Bungie’s announced direction; they are not evidence by themselves that the redesign improved the game. Bungie’s reveal recap describes the plan and systems.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

  • Consider it if you already play Destiny 2, want to follow the Fate Saga’s opening chapter, and are interested in a campaign set on a new destination.
  • Be more cautious if your main reason for buying an expansion is a strong progression loop or a broad, varied set of activities; the cited PC Gamer review specifically raised concerns in those areas.
  • Do not use the Steam rating alone as a substitute for deciding which parts of the expansion matter to you. It captures a dated set of Steam user reviews, while the critic evidence here is limited and emphasizes different aspects of the experience.
