The original The Variable quest began with six Vex nodes in the EDZ’s Gulch, then led to the Avalon Exotic mission and Vexcalibur. Bungie now lists The Variable among vaulted Exotic quests, however, and its current archive does not say how to obtain Vexcalibur today. Treat the steps below as a historical walkthrough, not a confirmed route that is still available.
Can you still get Vexcalibur?
Bungie’s Destiny Content Vault page lists The Variable and its Vexcalibur glaive reward among the Year 7 Exotic quests that are no longer available to complete. The Year 7 vault section began June 4, 2024.

Bungie also says, “Weapons earned from these quests may continue to be earnable in-game by different means.” The page does not identify a current acquisition method for Vexcalibur, so it does not confirm that the original quest, its mission, or an alternate route is available now.
The original The Variable quest steps
The following is the original route, as described in a guide updated March 8, 2023. It explains how the quest worked at the time; it is not a current availability guarantee.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
- Go to The Gulch in the EDZ. Travel to the European Dead Zone and land at The Gulch.
- Collect all six Vex nodes. Approach each node to collect an Access Code fragment. The historical guide says all six were required to reveal the next route.
- Follow the route to the cave. After collecting the nodes, head to the cave in the southeast part of The Gulch. Enter and continue to the friendly Harpy and the mission start.
- Start //NODE.OVRD.AVALON//. This was the associated Vex Network Exotic mission. Progress through its encounters.
- Finish the mission and claim Vexcalibur. Completing Avalon rewarded the Exotic glaive.
The original mission included code-input encounters, a Data Nullifier section in which players defeated corrupted Dataholders and deposited their motes at a central conflux, and a final fight against Brakion. These are details of the historical mission, not confirmation that Avalon can currently be launched.

Upgrade instructions attached to the original quest may no longer match the live game. In a Bungie Help Forums reply dated January 17, 2025, BNGHelp3 said the Vexcalibur: Expert Authorization Override quest had been vaulted. The reply advised running the normal Exotic mission to collect intrinsics, then completing the mission on Legend after collecting them. That advice predates the current 2026 context and does not establish that the mission or this progression is accessible now.
For current status, Bungie’s archive is the clearest official reference: it confirms that The Variable is vaulted, but leaves Vexcalibur’s present acquisition route unspecified.
