Destiny: Rising Review: Is the Mobile Shooter Worth the Gacha?

Destiny: Rising brings Destiny shooting and activities to mobile, but its gacha remains a key caveat. Here’s what the launch review praised and what later reporting says about character progression.

Destiny: Rising has the ingredients to appeal to Destiny fans on mobile: first- and third-person shooting, co-op strikes, PvE and PvP activities, and a familiar universe. But its gacha systems are a real part of the decision, not a footnote. A launch review praised the combat and activity variety while criticizing the draw rates; later coverage described planned changes to character acquisition. Whether those changes make progression feel fair now depends on the live rules, which can change.

What is Destiny: Rising?

Destiny: Rising is a free-to-play mobile sci-fi RPG shooter developed and published by NetEase Games under license from Bungie. It launched worldwide for iOS and Android on August 28, 2025. Its story takes place in an alternate Destiny timeline after the Dark Age, rather than continuing the events of Destiny 2. NetEase’s launch announcement describes the game and its setting.

The game supports first- and third-person views, touchscreen controls, and compatible controllers. Its announced features include campaign missions, six-player co-op strikes, replayable PvE and PvP modes, clans, social spaces, and customizable shared areas. Those features give it more than a single-player campaign pitch, though their presence alone does not establish how well each mode plays.

What did the launch review think?

In a review published August 30, 2025, Tobi Stouffer of ComicBook.com scored Destiny: Rising 4/5. Stouffer praised the combat and controls, variety of side activities, detailed environments, and recognizable Destiny setting. The review’s reservations were fast battery drain on mobile, a slow, low-stakes story, and punishing gacha rates. It also characterized the combat as a lighter version of Destiny 2 and saw the game as a possible way for people without console or PC access to explore Destiny. These are one critic’s launch impressions, not a current independent test or a guarantee of how the game performs on a particular device. Read the ComicBook.com review.

ComicBook.com also reported that the game had passed 10 million pre-orders at launch. That is a launch-era figure reported by the outlet, not a current player count.

How serious is the gacha problem?

The clearest criticism in the launch review was the character-draw system: Stouffer described the rates as punishing. That assessment is dated to the 2025 launch and should not be treated as a measurement of today’s odds or progression rules.

Later, GamesRadar covered a Season 4 preview that described plans to reduce reliance on random character draws and daily energy limits. According to the report, character fragments could be earned through activities, and completing core seasonal objectives would award 40 fragments that could be exchanged for a character. GamesRadar also quoted the developer preview saying, “Acquiring new Characters through Draw Pools only felt more like a stressful gamble than a celebration.” The statement is the developer’s wording reproduced in that coverage, and the fragment details were presented as planned changes—not independently verified live rules. Read GamesRadar’s Season 4 report.

For the current character pool, draw rates, currencies, energy limits, and fragment availability, check the latest notices on the official game site. The site listed weekly patch notes when accessed October 8, 2026, including an October 7 notice about server maintenance on October 8. Live-service details can change, so neither the launch review nor a preview establishes the rules in effect on the day you play.

Is Destiny: Rising like Destiny 2?

It shares the setting and recognizable franchise elements, but it is built as a mobile game with touch controls and optional controller support. The launch reviewer described its combat as lighter than Destiny 2; the available evidence does not support a full current comparison of gunfeel, endgame, or activity depth.

The most useful expectation is that Rising offers a mobile entry point into an alternate Destiny story with multiple shooting activities, rather than a phone-sized replacement for Destiny 2. The launch review’s criticism of story pacing is also worth weighing if narrative momentum is your main reason for playing.

Can you use a controller?

Yes. NetEase and the Google Play listing say the game supports compatible controllers as well as touchscreen input. Controller support is optional, and compatibility depends on the device and controller; the available sources do not establish that every model works. The Google Play listing includes the game’s platform details.

Who should try it?

  • Destiny fans who want a mobile option: the alternate-timeline setting, shooting, and range of announced activities may be a draw.
  • Players wary of gacha: take the launch criticism seriously, then inspect current official patch notes and in-game acquisition paths before investing time or money. The Season 4 report indicates planned alternatives, but does not confirm their current implementation.
  • Players who prioritize a substantial story or a close Destiny 2 equivalent: the launch reviewer found the story slow and low-stakes, and described the combat as lighter. Treat that as one dated opinion, not a definitive comparison.
  • Mobile players concerned about long sessions: the launch review reported fast battery drain, but did not establish a device-specific rate or current performance across phones.
