He later clarified that his “psychopaths” remark was a joke—not a literal accusation—and said a separate pitch for an animated series had also been turned down.
What did the Deus Ex actor say?
On January 1, 2026, Toufexis posted about projects he expected to work on that year. When people speculated about Deus Ex, he wrote: “No Deus Ex because the people in charge are psychopaths.” PC Gamer reported that his post listed one public project and three others covered by nondisclosure agreements. PC Gamer’s report and interview and HotHardware’s coverage quoted the post.

The wording was deliberately provocative. In a January 5 interview with PC Gamer, Toufexis clarified: “I was just kidding about ‘psychos’ in the sense that they’re crazy to not make another game.” His point was that he thought another entry should be made, not that he was making a clinical claim about the franchise’s owners.

The available reporting does not establish one official reason for the series’ status. Toufexis’s criticism is his opinion as an actor associated with the games, not an official explanation from the company or its owners.

PC Gamer separately reported that Embracer Group shut down a Deus Ex revival project at Eidos Montréal in January 2024. That is secondary reporting; it should not be treated as an official company statement or as proof that the cancellation explains every later decision about the franchise.
Was the actor’s animated-series pitch rejected?
Yes, according to Toufexis. In the PC Gamer interview, he said he had pitched an animated series in which he would produce and co-write with a writer he described as a prominent videogame figure. He said the pitch was declined, adding, “Because they’re crazy.” That account is his description of the pitch and response; the interview does not establish a broader company rationale.

Does this confirm there will be no new game?
No. Toufexis’s January 2026 post ruled out his involvement in a new Deus Ex project that year, while PC Gamer’s interview reported his view that decision-makers should make another game. Neither establishes a permanent cancellation or the franchise’s release status after that coverage. The reporting available as of October 8, 2026 does not verify a later announcement or change in status.
