devcomponents_dotnetbar2.dll Missing: Match the App and Version

If Windows reports that devcomponents_dotnetbar2.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or has the wrong version, repair the application that installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Which fix applies to you

Use the error wording to choose the right path:

  • “The code execution cannot proceed because DevComponents.DotNetBar2.dll was not found”: repair or reinstall the application that needs the file.
  • “Could not load file or assembly” or “manifest definition does not match the assembly reference”: restore the exact version shipped with the application.
  • “One of its dependencies could not be loaded”: inspect the full error and repair the required .NET Framework or another application dependency.
  • The file disappeared after an update, restore, cleanup, or antivirus scan: check Windows Security Protection History, then reinstall the application.
  • “The application was unable to start correctly” or “not designed to run on Windows”: treat the file as corrupt, incompatible, blocked, or tampered with. Do not assume that copying another DLL will help.
  • The application works for another Windows account but not yours: test a clean user profile after completing the application repair steps.

DevComponents.DotNetBar2.dll is a managed .NET assembly from DevComponents’ DotNetBar Windows Forms component suite. It is an application file, not a Windows system component, and it should normally remain beside the executable or in the application’s own installation directory.

The most likely fix: repair or reinstall the owning application

The correct replacement comes from the application that originally installed the assembly. Public records associate this file with older .NET applications, including Yamicsoft Windows 7/8 Manager, SAP Disclosure Management, PROMS, and other software using DotNetBar. The filename alone cannot identify which program is installed on your computer.

Identify the program that needs the file

  1. Reproduce the error and note the name of the application shown in the window title or message.
  2. If the error appears during startup, check the shortcut:
  3. Right-click the shortcut.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Read the Target field.
  6. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  7. If the program is listed, right-click it and select Open file location.
  8. In File Explorer, inspect the folder containing the executable and its nearby configuration files.
  9. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for the same program.

Do not treat a DLL found in a random folder as proof of ownership. The application named in the error, its executable directory, and its installed-program entry are stronger clues.

Use Windows repair

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the affected application.
  3. Select the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Advanced options.
  5. Select Repair if Windows provides that option.
  6. Start the application again.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the program, choose Advanced options, and use Repair when available.

Some desktop applications do not expose Windows’ Repair option. In that case, open the application’s own uninstaller:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if offered.
  6. Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows.

For a game or launcher, use its Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function. This restores the complete application package instead of replacing one file in isolation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall when repair is unavailable

If repair fails:

  1. Back up the application’s settings or save files if necessary.
  2. Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer, original installation media, or an authenticated enterprise software package.
  5. Start the application before copying back custom files or plugins.

If the original installer is unavailable, contact the software vendor or use the organization’s original licensed media. Do not substitute a DLL from an unofficial repository.

A successful repair or reinstall should restore the complete application folder and allow the program to start without the DotNetBar error. If the message now names a specific version, follow the version-mismatch section below.

Fix a version mismatch instead of a missing file

DotNetBar assemblies exist in multiple incompatible versions. Public examples include versions from older 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, 10.x, and later application builds. Those version numbers are not interchangeable Windows components.

A typical failure looks like this:

Could not load file or assembly 'DevComponents.DotNetBar2,
Version=10.3.0.4, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=7eb7c3a35b91de04' or one of its dependencies.
The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference.
(Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040)

Another application may require version 8.1.0.6 or a different build entirely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do as a Windows user

  1. Copy the complete error into a text file.
  2. Record the requested version, public key token, and application name.
  3. Repair or reinstall that application.
  4. Do not replace its DLL with a newer file taken from another program.
  5. If the application came from a business deployment, ask the administrator for the matching installer package.

The file may exist and still fail because the application was compiled against a different assembly identity. A newer or older copy can produce the same 0x80131040 error.

What developers should check

If you maintain the application:

  1. Open the project reference for DevComponents.DotNetBar2.
  2. Confirm the reference version and deployment output.
  3. Check that the required DLL is copied beside the application executable.
  4. Inspect the application’s .exe.config file.
  5. Confirm that any binding redirect is deliberate and tested.
  6. Rebuild and deploy the complete dependency set.

Microsoft documents application-level binding redirects for strong-named .NET Framework assemblies. A redirect normally belongs in a configuration file beside the executable, such as Application.exe.config. Use one only when the installed DotNetBar version is compatible with the application; a redirect is not a substitute for an incompatible assembly.

Repair the .NET Framework prerequisite

DotNetBar is a managed .NET assembly, but the required framework version depends on the parent application. Older software may target .NET Framework 2.0–3.5, while other applications require a 4.x release. The DLL filename does not reveal the exact target.

  1. Read the application’s documentation or installer requirements.
  2. Open Microsoft’s .NET Framework download page.
  3. Install or repair the framework version required by the application.
  4. For older software, check Microsoft’s .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installer.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Launch the application again.

On Windows 11 or Windows 10, you can also check optional framework components:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Enable .NET Framework 3.5, including its available subcomponents, when the application specifically requires it.
  5. Select OK and allow Windows to download or install the feature.
  6. Restart if requested.

Do not reinstall the framework merely because DotNetBar is missing. A framework repair addresses a missing or damaged runtime prerequisite, not a deleted third-party application assembly.

Check antivirus quarantine and blocked files

A failed update, cleanup utility, restore operation, or antivirus action can remove the assembly.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections involving the affected application folder.
  5. Confirm the detection path and the application name.
  6. If the file was quarantined, prefer reinstalling the application from its official source.

Restore or allow a quarantined file only after confirming that:

  • it belongs to the expected application;
  • the application came from a trusted source;
  • the file is in the normal application directory;
  • the installer or file signature is valid;
  • the detection is demonstrably a false positive.

If the file is in a temporary folder, an unrelated system directory, or an unofficial software package, do not restore it simply because the application requests it. Scan the system and remove cracked or tampered installers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy it to System32 or run regsvr32

Do not place DevComponents.DotNetBar2.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The application normally loads its private managed assemblies from its own directory and related .NET probing paths. Global copying can hide the real deployment problem and create conflicts between applications.

Do not run:

regsvr32 DevComponents.DotNetBar2.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A managed DotNetBar assembly is not generally repaired that way. An entry-point or registration error is expected and does not prove that Windows itself is damaged.

If the file exists but the application still fails, inspect the complete exception. “One of its dependencies” may identify the real missing component. For developers, check the executable directory, reference properties, .exe.config file, and deployment output.

Check application architecture and dependencies

A managed assembly identified as MSIL is not itself proof that the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. The parent executable, its target framework, and its native dependencies determine compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these checks:

  1. Right-click the application executable and select Properties.
  2. Open the Details tab and record available product information.
  3. Check the publisher’s system requirements.
  4. Confirm that all application files came from the same installer.
  5. Remove copied or mixed-version DLLs from the application folder only when the vendor’s repair process instructs you to do so.

Do not download a “32-bit” or “64-bit” DotNetBar DLL from a third-party site. Architecture labels alone do not establish that the assembly matches the application’s version or public key.

Repair broader Windows corruption only as a last resort

Because DotNetBar is not a Windows component, SFC and DISM will not normally recreate it. Use them when other Windows programs also show corruption or when broader system damage is suspected.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  3. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Try the repaired application again.

Microsoft provides the DISM and SFC repair procedure. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that is normal when only the third-party application is damaged.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies, while its full version handles repair; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for a missing DotNetBar assembly.

Drivers and Device Manager

A driver update is not a normal fix for DevComponents.DotNetBar2.dll. Consider it only if the application also reports graphics, printer, audio, or hardware initialization errors.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category named in the application error.
  4. Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
  5. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart Windows and retest the application.

For a rollback, right-click the device, select Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, and confirm when available. Obtain drivers from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update, not from a DLL download page.

Manually checking many hardware entries can make it difficult to determine which driver changed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation through its full version is optional; it does not replace repairing the application that owns DotNetBar.

System Restore and user-profile checks

Use System Restore when the failure began immediately after a known update, cleanup operation, or software installation and the original installer is unavailable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select a restore point from before the failure.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Start the restore and restart Windows.

If reinstalling works for other users but not one account, create or test another Windows user profile. A damaged profile can affect application paths, permissions, or per-user configuration. This is a diagnostic step, not a DotNetBar-specific repair.

Safe sources and prevention

Avoid DLL download websites, registry cleaners, and automated “DLL repair” packages. An arbitrary file can contain malware, belong to the wrong DotNetBar version, have the wrong architecture, or leave the application’s other dependencies broken.

Use these sources instead:

  • the application publisher’s official installer;
  • the original installation media;
  • an authenticated company software repository;
  • the application’s built-in updater or launcher verification;
  • Microsoft’s official .NET Framework installers for framework prerequisites;
  • the software vendor’s support channel.

After the application works, keep its installation directory intact, avoid cleaning tools that remove unknown application files, and create a restore point before major updates.

FAQ

Is DevComponents.DotNetBar2.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a third-party managed .NET assembly used by applications built with DevComponents DotNetBar. It does not normally belong in System32 or SysWOW64.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download the missing DLL separately?

That is unsafe and often ineffective. The correct version must match the application’s assembly reference and dependencies. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead.

Why does the file exist but Windows still says it cannot load it?

The file may have the wrong version, may be corrupt, may be blocked, or may depend on another missing assembly. A manifest mismatch commonly produces error 0x80131040.

Will installing .NET Framework fix it?

Only if the parent application requires a missing or damaged .NET Framework version. It will not recreate a deleted DotNetBar file.

Should I use regsvr32?

No. DotNetBar is a managed application assembly, not a typical COM DLL requiring registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does MSIL mean I need a 32-bit DLL?

No. MSIL identifies managed intermediate language. It does not by itself establish whether the complete application is 32-bit or 64-bit.

What should I send the vendor?

Send the full error text, application name and version, Windows version, installation path, the requested DotNetBar assembly version, and the steps already attempted. Do not send a DLL downloaded from an unofficial source as a proposed fix.
